What are the odds ANY freshman will stick around for four years?

As a side note, speaking for myself, I have absolutely no clue what kind of player Rollins is. Is he a possible starter or a potential redshirt. What kind of game does he have? Is he a shooter or a slasher? Can he rebound? Defend?

Judging from his offers, he's strictly a mid-major talent at this point considering (based on verbal commits) no Missouri Valley or A-10 or (low level) American Conference team was on his list of offers. Almost exclusively Horizon League with Toledo and Kent from the MAC. Was this due to size (extremely thin/skinny) or talent level?

Based on Kent's pretty decent history with finding talent in the Chicago area, guessing Rollins is probably a rising talent. The question is (by Kent standards) is he a role player or a key player. As a freshman, let's hope he's a role player. He can be a key player after that.

Cleveland, those odds were already not great and I assume will only get worse.

From the NCAA report (below): "That said, about 40% of all men’s basketball players who enter Division I directly out of high school depart their initial school by the end of their sophomore year."

Good points.

I would think Rollins will either redshirt or provide limited time as a role player. Historically, Coach Senderoff relies more on transfers as opposed to freshmen. Since Senderoff's 10-year stint as head coach, only one freshman has made the MAC all-freshmen team (Anthony Roberts, & we know what happened to him).

Look at Toledo ... Look at Akron ... Look at Western ... Look at Ball State ... look at Buffalo ... and that's just in the MAC. Three to five transfers is not out of the question or abnormal.

Even multiple Duke, Carolina, Kentucky players are in the portal. Add them up for yourself.

https://www.verbalcommits.com/transfers/2021

(Go through the ENTIRE list, not just the 48-hour entries).

Just to be clear. I don’t complain about the transfer portal because it’s only a Kent problem. I also didn’t say Sendy was in it because I want him fired. I just think this whole thing is ridiculous. What organization can function properly this way? This whole thing started based on if coaches can do it without penalty players should be able to also. That logic is flawed in my mind. An adult with a family gives up a lot when he moves. Children get yanked out of school, wives or husbands get upset, etc. etc. It’s not as seamless as it’s presented. Okay I’ll agree waiting for a year might be too severe but there needs to be something. Even a direct labor worker has to give up benefits for 30 days and accept probationary status for a certain time period when he makes a move. The NCAA needs to figure this out.

I know that ultimately we (on the board) want the same outcome. In this case what makes me shake my head is that I weigh more than one of the recruits and the other one had an uphill battle from day one.

You are correct ... but I will say the depth of the All-MAC freshmen teams vary greatly from year to year. Jaylin Walker did not make the MAC All-Freshman team, but he was a solid producer his first year. If Rollins can match that as a rookie - even if he is not a JW talent overall, that would be a solid start IMO.

RE: Bainbridge in the Portal
Walker got hurt 6 games into the MAC schedule his freshman year then didn't return until the final three games of the season. That's why he wasn't in consideration for MAC All-freshman. He was near 20 mpg as a freshman and scored over 8ppg in league player on 42% shooting. Probably a strong bid for the freshman team had he stayed healthy.

I'll add though, Sendy tends to only keep one freshman in his rotation. That year for example, Avery played in 28 games but only got 8.5 mpg despite Walker and Pollard both getting hurt. Roberts' freshman year he seemed to win the right to the freshman minutes over Gholston. Really the only time two true freshman stayed in the rotation in recent memory was Pippen and Peterson but even then Pippen was only getting 10mpg and had his minutes severely cut down the stretch as they went with Edwin at the 4 (which paid off with a ring).

Obviously way too early to know what to expect from each freshman or even what our roster ends up looking like. But based on history I don't expect heavy minutes from more than one next year.

Still a bit salty that Coach Senderoff did not give Pippen a chance to go against TJ Leaf in the NCAA tournament game in '17. Would have been interesting.

Frankly, if Kent can get 1-2 jucos/transfers on the baseline here's hoping the big kid redshirts. Backup minutes are already taken by O'Neil, who hopefully adds even more minutes to his gametime next season. Even Sullinger would benefit by a redshirt with Gio/Carrey at PG, especially if Nuga returns.

Sadly, that's probably old school thinking. But that doesn't mean it's wrong.

Why isn't there talk about Mr Basketball Davis? If he is of value, he should be seeing the floor This year.

The guess here is, with a traditional off-season VCD will emerge as a viable bench piece. Just judging from the stats (and his listed size) he seems to be an undersized post player who has a nose for rebounding, but is not particularly athletic.

Seems to have some basketball instincts, but they do not translate (at this point at least) to him being a perimeter player. That could change with a productive off-season.

BTW ... this lack of an off-season last year quite likely hindered EBainbridge significantly. Just saying.

There's a reason the NCAA gave players that year back. There are a ton of young (Fr/So) players in that transfer portal who have yet to scratch the surface of their potential, who would be better served by going through a traditional off-season and preseason both for themselves and the teams they are leaving.

If Davis is really as tall as his listed height, he's taller than Antonio Gates was.

I would venture to say, even though VCD is taller, he is perhaps half the athlete AG was, and while VCD's intangibles/bbIQ seem to be high, I would also say still very short in that department as well to AGs.

That's not to say VCD is a bum, far from it, but let's also remember AG was a bonafide All-American. That's a high pedestal to step up on.

Agree Cleveland. My only intention was to point out that being "only" 6'5" (assuming that is true) does not necessarily mean someone can't perform as an "inside" player. Of course, you have to have the natural ability, be physically strong and work hard at it.

As of now, there are 1,020 players in the D I portal. That's close to 1/4 of all D I players. I don't know what all that may say about the current state of D I basketball, but I don't think it says anything positive.

My guess is ... by the end of the summer that number will be right at 1,500. What these players don't understand is another 1,000 players with equal or better credentials than most of these kids have are available in the juco ranks.

By September a lot of players are going to have a very rude awakening!!!

MAC POY Marreon Jackson entered the portal last night. It'll be interesting to see what the league looks like when the dust settles.

SO FAR ... and let's emphasize that ... compared to most leagues the MAC has been hit by numbers, but not by marquee losses. Jackson was a 4-year senior at UT expected to go pro (and still might) ... the biggest hit looks to be the Coleman kid at Ball State, and the big kid Titus Wright at Western Michigan. Nuga, of course, is a big loss ... if he ultimately goes, but that is about it.

No word yet on Preston at Ohio, but the big OU inside senior starter has said he is returning, so is Plowden at BG and I believe the BG sixth man as well. The guess is LCJ at Akron is turning pro, but nothing official so he could be back as well. Graves said he is done at UB after four years.

Overall, the young teams in the league (CMU, Akron, OU), other than Western, all seem to be pretty much holding together, even though all have had transfers.

The rest of the transfers around the league seem to be bench players or role players, if they played much at all. Let's hope it stays that way all around the league.
