landing agile 6-11 guys w good basketball skills is very competitive, especially if you aren't a Big 10 ACC type name. what the college game tells us is that having an agile muscular 6-7 guy who loves to defend and rebound is usually enough. especially, if you can pair him w a similar player (the '21 OU model) or finesse guy with height who can block shots and snatch some rebounds (the '18 and '19 buffalo model) even the '20 akron model was a version of this. you see lower seeds win a lot of ncaa games (loyola, n texas, oral roberts, oregon st, etc...) with just 1 bigger guy, a tough forward with some strength, and good guard play.

this past season's rocket team at times looked better than any TK has put on the court. unfortunately, we plateaued a bit at the end when we needed to peak. there were solid stretches where we were really good. I'm encouraged and still frustrated. the reality is there is as much need at guard right now as there is at forward, and we are unlikely to land jack nunge players often (weatherspoon, fletcher and taylor were exceptions in 10-11 years of recruiting). i'd expect us to stay in the mix for a guard transfer here and there but be pretty selective.

obviously great offense is all about developing a balance between the frontcourt and the backcourt. Next year I would love to see Shumate, Milner and Edu become more involved in the offense. Of course you need great guards who play within the team concept to make that happen.

while i think next year is mostly about how much rian rollins improves, milner should be the leader. he started to take charge a lot down the stretch this year and he has a good personality and style of play for leadership. we also saw a ton of improvement from shumate, so I'd expect that to continue and him to be better on the court and more vocal as well. smart kid who loves to ball. if he can add 10 lbs of strength and not lose quickness it will make him a lot more versatile. edu needs health. he will defend and rebound, but needs to stay healthy and get comfortable for his offense to come around. he's actually pretty skilled dribbling, passing and shooting, just hasn't found any offensive flow or consistently in games yet.

RE: Looking at Transfer Portal
BG gets a big commit from Samford's leading scorer, grad transfer combo guard myron gordon. dig a quick dig and he missed about half the season w injury but had 29 points vs georgia w only 5 missed shots and 2 turnovers and 23 and 10 rebounds vs belmont, so padded stats against good competition. BG already added a high risk high reward transfer in samari curtis, former xenia star who has been signed to xavier, cincinnati, nebraska and evansville over his career but only played in a few spurts. scorer who should now team w fulcher, methany, fields and gordon to give BG a pretty high level group of guards. with plowden coming back at forward they are again just a big guy short of a strong roster but have at least 2 roster spots open.

An interesting guy in the portal is Da'kquan Davis. Philly kid who just graduated from D3 Arcadia as one of the top scorers in the country at that level. About the same size and build of marreon jackson with a beard look that makes them kinda twinzy. aggressive driver who takes a lot of long straight on 3s. committed to North Texas which just upset Purdue in the tourney but has had internal program issues and guys transferring out or decommitting lately. I think our staff prefers bringing in a guard with some experience but eligibility to grow alongside of rollins, instead of a 1 year rental, but Davis is interesting in that he's a bit of an mj stand-in.
