New students MUST live on campus for 2 years
https://www.wwaytv3.com/2021/03/23/first...s-at-uncw/

Would this apply to students from the area?

Seems silly but I guess they built all these new buildings and want to make sure they get used

There was a similar requirement where i went to undergrad. That said, I'd imagine there is ways around it. They still have students commuting from locally. What's to say that a parent couldn't get a place and the student register as a commuter?

I looked up the policy, and if you live are from Pender, Brunswick, or NH you are exempt.

Im suprised they didnt incude Columbus and Bladen too as that is our region's defined 5 county area.

Im generally cynical about everything, so to me this is about the money.

They built these dorms and want people to fill them and buy the meal plans.

Anything else about the college experience is just spin.

Right, so what is theoretically stopping a parent from renting an apartment in NH, Pender, or Brunswick with the intention of their child to use and using that as their address?

RE: New students MUST live on campus for 2 years
I didn't even realize that freshman were required to stay on campus one year. I lived on campus for three years, but I was definitely in the minority. Being able to grab one of the suites and choosing my suitemates made living on campus okay, and I was able to defer monthly payments to my loan that way. It worked for me, but I'm not sure how I feel about it being a requirement. The housing is definitely nicer now than when I was there, so it doesn't seem to be terribly unfair. Everyone needs to experience Galloway though.

Are there examples of any other universities requiring two years on campus?

I imagine that they'd be able to define how long the residency has been established to curb students/parents abusing this. Similar to requirements to qualify as an in-state student.

Policy states you have to reside in NH, Pender, or Brunswick county WITH YOU LEGAL GUARDIAN to gain the automatic exemption.

No living at a family members house, even if that family member will be there full time.

Your legal guardian would have to prove they are moving down here too I imagine.

Ironically I didnt think you were supposed to have legal guardians at age 18

You guys are probably right. That loophole seems too obvious I'm sure they thought about it.

I think that's probably just legal verbiage. How the hell are they going to prove where the kid was? lol

I think it boils down to, if you apply and are not from the 3 exempt counties, they are going to expect you pay their dorm fees and buy a meal plan if you are a first year student.

If you're over 21, married, have kids, or ar active duty military you will also be exempt.

If they catch you breaking the rules, they reserve the right to charge you for dorm and meal plan.

Most 1st year students like to live on campus, it's that 2nd year that seems to be the pushback as the trend has been to make friends and move off campus.

It just sucks for non natives if you own property down here and can make your own arrangements
