RE: Dick Vitale says
After failing at Illinois State, he obviously learned a heck of a lot from Rick Majerus who I always believed was a great coach. I think Porter was a a solid coach during his time here, and things just didn't work out at Illinois State. But his apprenticeship with Majerus, plus the hard knocks he took early at Loyola, have obviously made him a great coach at this point. My son asked me, the other day, if I thought he would take one of the really "big" jobs that have opened up. Last time around, he clearly believed he owed Loyola some loyalty after they took a chance on him. Now that he has given them 10 years, I think he will feel free to do whatever he wants to and thinks is best for him and his family. Maybe that is staying right where he is, although maybe that is taking a job in the Big 10 or some other P5 league. Only he has the answer to that.

Well, he is beating almost everyone at Loyola, and has been to a Final Four and a Sweet 16, so there is not much higher that he can go. And I am sure he is not starving. It probably boils down to where he wants to be.

Yes, I'm sure he is bringing home more money than anyone on this board. He can live extremely well on his current income. But, it seems that most coaches are constantly driven to make more. Doesn't seem like money is Porter's primary concern. But, if it is his desire to coach at a big-time program, now is the time to make a move. But like you said, he has already made a Final 4 at Loyola and I think he could well make it again this year. What is more big-time than that?

While I would agree that money is not the driving factor for all coaches, it certainly is a big time factor. Just like it is in every other occupation. But that said, I would imagine that the Porter is waiting for the right job that not only fits his money criteria, but other factors too. I would guess that the right money, at a Job in or near Chicago, in the Big East, would be about perfect. Catholic Schools and opportunity to go to the Big Dance without having to rely almost exclusively on winning the conference tournament to get a crack at the National Championship. And wouldn’t you know it, DePaul and Marquette are both open! Stay tuned!

DePaul has had some glory years in the past, and Porter is the sort of coach who could build that program. Of course, Loyola has a national championship in their history.

RE: Dick Vitale says
Internet rumors indicate Depaul is trying to hire NY Knicks assistant Kenny Payne. Of course, that could be the old "smoke screen".

Two points about Depaul. Us old timers remember the glory days when Ray Meyer was coach- but they have been down for years, and right now Loyola is a better "program". If Porter wants to "move" he really wouldn't have to- meaning he could take the DePaul job and not have to physically move or cause upheaval for his family. Really interesting situation.

DePaul has the history; Porter has the present. Could be a good match.

According to Hoopdirt this is the latest on the Depaul head job-

It sounds like Knicks assistant Kenny Payne will be part of the narrowed down group at DePaul. He and new DePaul AD DeWayne Peevy are tight from their time together at Kentucky. Cleveland State head coach Dennis Gates, Detroit head coach Mike Davis, and Pacific head coach Damon Stoudamire are all reportedly in the mix as well.

Mike Woodson, another Knicks assistant, is rumored as the leading candidate at Indiana. So the leading candidates at Depaul and Indiana are two assistant coaches with the Knicks, a team that has struggled for years. Seems really strange to me.

Well, the deck is stacked Porter's direction. He can probably get about any job he wants at this point. But if he wants to stay at Loyola and just "flat out coach," he can do that, too.

You would think so, but I haven't seen his name at the top of many lists. Maybe others no he isn't leaving- I'm sure folks at DePaul have a lot more info then we do. I saw Minnesota hired someone I never heard of. The "reported" top choices at Depaul and Indiana seem rather odd to me- hiring assistants is always a crap shoot. Anyway, I guess we'll see soon- Unless Porter goes to the Final 4, which I actually believe if quite likely.

Wow, I knew DePaul has been down for awhile, but this is rather amazing. If I asked them, I would bet my kids, who are 30 and 35, would barely know a thing about DePaul:

DePaul hasn’t finished a regular season ranked since 1992.

The program hasn’t been to a NCAA Tournament since 2004 and has just two tournament appearances in 29 years.

And recently? The Blue Demons have had just one winning season in the last 14 years and a horrific 57-224 record in the Big East since joining the conference in 2005.

RE: Dick Vitale says
What is the relationship between Loyola and DePaul? Do Loyola fans hate DePaul, or visa versa? Since they are both Catholic schools do their fans support both? At one time, DePaul likely had many more fans but that may have changed in recent years. Would a significant minority of Chicago college basketball fans be really pissed at Porter if he left Loyola for DePaul? Strange situation- can't think of a similar one in college sports. Maybe it would be like the Nets' coach leaving for the Knicks, or the Clippers' coach moving to the Lakers. Actually, Xavier and Cincinnati might be similar.

But back in the old days they were a powerhouse. But maybe even their current fans don't fully realize that. It has been a long time. Ray Meyer took them to two Final Fours. Son Joey Meyer took them to six straight 20-plus win seasons. But since Joey left (1997) it has been slim pickings.

The Knicks have actually improved a lot this year. Keep in mind that some nba coaches do better at the college level.

Over the last four seasons, Loyola has averaged a record of 25-9. Not too bad.

What is even more impressive is that in the 24 seasons prior to Porter's arrival, Loyola had had only six seasons at .500 or above. So he has totally rebuilt the program.

Porter didn't have a winning conference record until his 7th season at Loyola. Shows that sticking with a coach is not always the worst thing to do.
