RE: What is the future of the Southland Conference?
Commerce and Kingsville are A&M schools
Midwestern St and Angelo St are Texas Tech schools.

If I'm the Southland I'm trying to play both systems against each other with the fear of being left behind to try to get a pair to move up

Right—offer the A&M trio first but say you’re going after the Tech schools if you say no.

If the A&M schools say yes, that would put 4 A&M schools in the Southland.

Very much. We’ve yet to have a single sourced report on LSC school interest into the SLC. Conversely, we learned that WSSU & Bowie St were not interested in the MEAC fairly quickly.

RE: What is the future of the Southland Conference?
It seems that there are interests more D2 schools want to join the WAC than the Southland right now.

UCO
West Texas A&M
Colorado Mesa
Central Washington

Those four are more ready than any of the other Lone Star schools. If I am Central Washington and Western Oregon? I would look to tray and upgrade to D1 as fast as possible. They don't fit the profile for D3 schools, and NAIA is not a good option either with a lack of schools there playing football. There are more options to schedule closer games in D1 within driving distance there.

From my own experience, I can say that it's been harder to get folks at many of those D-II schools to talk. They also (generally) don't have dedicated beat writers, and few college sports reporters have built the time to build sourcing at the D-II level. The multitude of competing university systems in Texas also makes building sourcing, and handicapping moves, more of a challenge. So any information about this stuff, generally, has to come from other entities.

From what I've been told recently, the Southland has now actually started to talk to LSC schools. It's entirely possible they've reached out to others, but the two that I've heard by name were Midwestern...and Dallas Baptist.

Football has never been a serious candidate at DBU, although they have the land for it. But as a faith-first school of 2,800 undergraduates, it's not a place which has any visibility in the DFW area beyond its campus and it's hard to see people from beyond the campus coming to see them play Nicholls or UIW or even a larger school like SFA.

Midwestern State and Dallas Baptist, wow. Midwestern State doesn't even have enough men's sports to qualify for D1, yes they CAN ADD the needed sport but I'll just wait until they DO ADD. Dallas Baptist doesn't have women's basketball, is that really acceptable for a D1 school.

They have 7 Men's sports...i thought 6 was the minimum.

They would clearly need to add W Basketball.

Why would they add another school that doesn't play football though?

What about Central Oklahoma? They are in the footprint as well, and spent money upgrading their facilities.
Arkansas Tech is another logical candidate. They are a giant in their conference with the largest enrollment at D2, and it is hard telling if any of their conference mates will stay at D2 since they are small.

If the Wikipedia machine is right, they have women's basketball, four women's team sports total, three men's team sports ... they just need to add Men's cross country to their women's cross country and T&F program to hit 6+8 total sports.

Seems to be some confusion here. The discussion is about two separate schools. Team sports is not an issue.

Dallas Baptist is the school with no women's basketball. And DBU has no football which should lessen their value to the Southland.

RE: What is the future of the Southland Conference?
Question and I asked this of a Southeastern Louisiana University (see, I read their memo) fan.

Why do we only hear about Texas schools for Southland expansion? If there is "Texas fatigue" as we have often heard about between the lines from the Louisiana school athletic and administrators, why do the league presidents not look north to Arkansas (GAC institutions) or east (GSC / SIAC schools)? Not sure if they have and those schools are not financially ready for such a move, but you literally hear nothing about them like you do the others.

Cause the ASun probably tried all of those schools already

There is no school (maybe Arkansas Tech) anywhere close to being DI

The only potentials in the Gulf South are far east (GA/FL)

SIAC Schools are all small.

Correct. DBU has no football. It has no need for football, especially at the FCS level. See HBU...HBU bit off more than they can chew, in my opinion...they'd be a really good D-II school-no offense intended, as I'm a D-II guy. DBU and HBU are similar-sized institutions with a similar value system and a common affiliation. HBU has a larger endowment, but is also more expensive. I presume HBU is pushing them hard for the Southland.

Also, would DBU want to move their successful baseball program from the MVC to the Southland? The travel expenses would be cut (bus trips within TX and LA as opposed to flights to places like Illinois). The Southland has been pretty good in baseball, but they've lost some of that strength with the schools that left.

DBU would need to start women's basketball. They really should do that anyway. They are fortunate to be able to pair up with Texas Woman's University (women's hoops only) for travel in their current and past conference.

Their gym is fairly recently remodeled, and is very nice with primarily theater-type seating. It only seats 1500.

The kicker, though, is that there's no market for them in the Dallas-Fort Worth area outside of their alums and others associated with the school. They would become the 5th D-I school in the Metroplex, and that doesn't count the big state schools (UT, A&M, Tech, OU, etc.) with massive fan bases in the area.

Midwestern State, on the other hand, can make something like the Southland work. Angelo State, too, for that matter. If a D-I program can make it in Huntsville or Nacogdoches, it can defintely make it in a place like Wichita Falls or San Angelo. Midwestern State is the only game in town in a metro area of 150,000 people. That's not huge, but it's big enough to support a low-end D-I program. Their only competition is high school football and whatever is on TV. All they need to do is add a men's sport, and there's a conference in their backyard desperate for members.

There's no maybe about us either. Arkansas Tech is nowhere close to being D1. Additionally, we have no desire for D1.

The only real potential from the GSC is West Florida and they are not exploring any D1 move. Years ago, UWF was deciding between D2 with football or D1 without football; they chose D2 with football.

Any GA school would have to jump many hoops with the USG and none of the top candidates that get mentioned frequently meet D1 minimum sport sponsorship requirements.

The only reason I gave you a maybe is the size of the school compared to the rest of the conference.

If UWF was ever to go DI, I am sure the ASUN would snap them up.
