Good for the Southland

I wonder if this will encourage Kingsville and West Texas as well

It will force decisions as there are not many football playing d2 schools left in Texas and the well is getting dry.

WT would be better off in the WAC with Tarleton Abilene and New Mexico State.

Kingsville is a program with proud history but they haven't been great in awhile. Combine that with the system Chancellor encouraging that they merge with the other A&M campus 45 minutes down the road and I think the wirting is on the wall.

The ones I wonder about are Angelo state and Midwestern. Both are Texas Tech System schools, does tech want more D1 teams in their system?

UT-Tyler added a marching band a few years ago, but they also studied adding football.

UTPB is the other football school not mentioned.

The two New Mexico schools will go back to RMAC.

Central Oklahoma will look for a way out of D2 now. Arkansas Tech and Harding might as well. If GAC is down to 6 Arkansas schools? Where do they get the numbers back up?

Commerce’s decision leaves only seven football-playing members in the Lone Star Conference. That certainly puts pressure on WTAMU to consider moving up. I just wonder whether the WAC would be willing to extend an invitation right now. The WAC may prefer to sit tight for awhile and see if this larest round of realignment drops any unexpected prizes in their lap.

RE: What is the future of the Southland Conference?
I think the WAC will have to sit tight, at least briefly, mainly because of Tarleton State and Dixie State being in transition. Scheduling for basketball gets a little iffy when you have multiple non-counters in the same division.

I also expect the WAC may have an opportunity to consolidate geographically with the loss of Seattle, in which case adding a 14th school to wind back up at 13 doesn't make sense. Until the WCC and/or Mountain West act, that will remain a question mark.

Non counter status is not an issue after the first year of transition. If you recall, some schools didn’t realize they went over the four allowable non counter games when there were multiple first year non counters (believe when ACU, UIW and a few others around country were on move). WAC is fine. SLC could have issues if they get others on move at same time as it will impact non league schedules in hoops in particular but football as well based on the notion of needing seven D1 wins to make playoffs

Im very, very familiar with the situations of Texas universities. Texas - Tyler moved up to Division II very recently and they aren’t ready. Texas - Permian Basin is a good but growing fit for Division II and they, also, aren’t ready.

If we ( UTA) gets kicked out of the sunbelt, I wonder if we go back to the southland. I know they are looking for football schools, but I think there is still a possibilty. I am really not sure if anybody will take us at this point

Summit league might not be a bad option for UTA if WIU leaves for the OVC. Most of the schools are on the I-35 corridor.

Damn, I missed missed this yesterday. I see the link but not the tweet, so I'll put it up for us lazy folks

The SLC has more life than the OVC. But man they are in the WAC footprint. Gotta think they'll switch in five or six years after they finish the transition.

I think a lot of that will depend on whether the WAC goes FBS or not. If they do I think you'll see some movement both ways

TAMUC and Tarleton have become bookends on opposite sides of the Metroplex for the A&M system. Both are a similar distance from DFW, but are close enough to have a presence. TAMUC has a site in Dallas, Tarleton has a site and is building a bigger campus in Fort Worth. Both have grown into FCS schools. It remains to be seen if either will make a move toward FBS.

This puts the WAC in an interesting spot. They previously said they wanted 14 and it was the Texas division that was a member short. Do they issue an invite to Commerce too?

W.Texas A&M or Angelo St. one of them should want to move up. Also UCO

Commerce would not be accepting a SLC invite if a WAC one was coming.

I saw ramblings that Commerce is not the only one going to Southland. Angelo State is now being rumored to move up. Just forum chatter, but I really doubt Commerce alone is not the answer. Getting another Lone Star school would help their numbers.

RE: What is the future of the Southland Conference?
There is now a lot of talk that several D2 schools be making a statement by the 1st.

Angelo State
Central Oklahoma
Texas A&M-Commerce
West Florida

The flood gates seemed to be open right now.
