A lot of the national recruiting experts have been expecting this to happen with the full roll-out of the portal, and it does appear to be coming to fruition.

So essentially we have truly become the minor leagues for the NFL…guys start at High A/Double AA and earn their way into a AAA spot, and then the majors.

worst case eventuality. right now, the portal basically recirculates talent up and down the levels of competition. is there potential it could effectively function as "High A/Double AA"? a bit. mostly, though, you build a really good program and keep most of your good players because they like being a part of it. if you lose a few to blue chip programs, it's sort of a sign on honor as long as your program stays strong. and if comes with better recruits because some of the well rated (but not high 4/5 star recruits) trend toward good "mid majors/G5" knowing they will play early, then, programs like UT will get better. you can also expect that some of those 3-low 4 star kids who rs and/or mostly sit at those big schools will be more likely to transfer to places like Toledo knowing it won't cost them any years/eligibility to use the portal.

It seems like an unnecessary gamble to transfer up if you will continue to get exposure and for sure PT based on your early success at a place like UT. With the proven success of Mid-Am players in the NFL, why risk transfering up and possibly not starting/getting injured against bigger stronger competition? Only a very few of the very best could likely improve their draft position by transferring up. How many might not get PT or get injured due to transferring up?

Thanks, couldn't keep lurking...like the Rockets too much.

AAC is a weird middle ground...our lesser programs are losing people left and right, but the top programs (UC/UCF/SMU/Memphis) seem to be pulling a lot of guys and not really losing much of any players who are contributing.

Truth is, no one knows what is going to happen with this transfer portal on the football side. The basketball side is the f-ing wild west and just plain ridiculous already. There are coaches straight up saying they're not recruiting high school players outside of the top 25 players anymore because of how many move every year.

I agree with yr analysis.

You are good for board.

Toledo will be very tough this year. This would hv been a good year for a Toledo vs UC game. Both should win leagues. Keeping fingers crossed. UC D will be excellent.. hoping same for Toledo

Go Rockets!

Another verbal today, 6'1 180# DB/WR Roland McGhee, Jr from Nashville, TN (Ensworth HS).

State champion sprinter. 4.47 40 time at a recent camp where UT offered. I cannot find a page at 247 or rivals. From his twitter I only see offers from Akron, Tennessee State and Tennessee Martin. Looks like the Rockets were his 1st offer. Also see at least 1 offer to run track at an NAIA school.

There was a Roland McGhee long jumper was pretty good. I think the spelling is the same. Dad?

edit: duh, could have just googled. Yep, out of Trotwood-Madison, went to small college. Wiki says he took the US in-door and out-door in 98. Not blazing fast. His PR in the LJ is still top 25 all-time! I don't think he showed that promise in high school. Must have found a good coach.

Get the kid in early, could have some long jump comps with Anderson and Mitchel.

I love the Bedingfield commit. Very long and takes direct path to ball. Reminds me of Dyontae Johnson who is now 225#.

Verbals coming fast a furious now, as two more announced. 1st one:

DE Kiel Eldridge, 6'5 230 from Monroeville, IN just outside Fort Wayne.
Looks like several MAC offers plus Purdue, Cinci and Arizona State for some reason.

2nd one is QB Avery Smith, 6' 180 out of Sandy Springs, GA.
247 doesn't report any offers, but scanning his twitter, I see an offer from Army, Akron, and one from Morehouse, but that's it. Interesting.

Thanks NC

Eldridge Is a major coup. Kid is tough, quick and just what UT needs. The “missing” pass rush during 2017-2019 is getting revamped by Kuligowski in a BIG way! I look forward to big things from our personnel at DE and Edge in 2021. We have major talent now on hand and more coming.

Go Rockets!!!

RE: 2022 Football Recruiting Thread
Avery Smith might or might not be a QB recruit. If he is then I understand why we offered after watching his JR season QB highlights. I think he is a QB recruit. Highlights can be misleading as we all know. But the kid is a major athletic talent. If UT knows something and is an unrecruited GEM then I’m all for it. I encourage all UT board posters and fans to watch his JR video. He ALWAYS keeps his eyes downfield when out of the pocket which we all know is perhaps the best skill a QB can have in the current game. He is deadly on the run. It is very difficult to teach. Obviously the coaches love this kid enough to award a very rare and valuable scholarship.

Smith is definitely a scholarship QB recruit. I really like this kid.

Ealy, Woodside, and Gradkowski were all lightly or totally ignored recruits and they are our three best QB’s in history.

OSU wanted Ealey as a DB. Woodside had offers from Ohio U, Troy, WKU. Bruce G had a BB offer.

Thanks Boca for reinforcing my point. Ratings are nice but often meaningless. The tweets by Smith reflect the fact that he felt “disrespected” by the recruiting process and grateful to UT for recognizing and rewarding him!!

The offers are very interesting... how did you get that info so fast??? Did you remember Ealy’s offers, etc. or research respective player’s info?

Ealey's and Bruce's I remembered. Woodside, remembered the OU and WKU. Checked his 247 profile to see if there was anything else. OSU also wanted Roethlisberger as a TE.

Avery Smith was MVP of some big 7v7 tourneys with his team winning.
