"their 24/7 writer" seems to not understand that we are trying to separate ourselves from the G4, not cement our membership in the G5. And I'm sorry that is not a very nice thing to say, but it is the truth. Unfortunately, ESPECIALLY in College Football, perception IS reality, and the perception of us taking a school from anywhere except the very tip-top of the MW or independents is a sidestep at best.

To me this is interesting. I get the desire to take the best available team, but at the same time, we brought in mid-tier/bottom dwellers with little support or interest like Tulsa at one point. Tulane wasn't a world-beater either but I know they are an academic elite. ECU brought a fan base, but has had practically zero success as a member of this conference. Were these not considerations at the start of the AAC? Obviously BSU and SDSU nearly happened, but after they pulled out...?

UCF shouldn’t complain about Tulsa until they can win a game every now and then.

That’s why we complain.

At least you are honest, unlike some UCF fans, or that bull**** I bolded.

When Tulsa accepted the invite we were the second best basketball program in CUSA behind Memphis who was leaving. We had more ten win seasons than UCF and CUSA division and overall titles. We were also dominant in all the other sports. Overall we won more conference championships while in CUSA than any program. A title we continue to fight with Houston over in the AAC. We also come with a ten win season, three bowls, a conference championship appearance in football. The third highest conference wins in basketball, a ncaa bid, and conference championship there too. Hell our women's team went to the tourney in the transition. Multiple teams ranked in other sports, etc, etc.

The sour grapes are hilarious when you look at the actual facts.

(03-22-2021 03:27 PM)MidknightWhiskey Wrote:  As others have touched on there's 2 scenarios that could pan out
1. AAC maintains our current membership - expansion candidates = BYU, Boise, SDSU
2. AAC is poached losing 2-4 top members - expansion candidates then open up to the eastern & central teams that wouldn't otherwise be considered. Academics would keep programs like App St & Coastal Carolina from consideration. But that would really come down to inner conference politics and who's leaving on what schools the conference would want to go with. I'd expect at least 1 Texas school and at least 1 Florida school.

This.

The looming TV contract question opens the door for us to get poached. Once that happens the deck presumably reshuffles, and it could largely be based on who is taken which is something we don't have a clue about at this point.

But I'll be honest, and this is not meant to be derogatory. Even with the loss of two to three programs, which is entirely plausible, i don't see Arkansas State as being a replacement. I don't see them being in the top five options, but of course it's not up to me.

Good luck to you, I've got a number of friends who went there and are proud of your program.

Frankly I bcould care less. As I have posted before we are fine where we are. If anything I want more regional schools on our schedule. You will find that most GSU fans have pined for the Big East/AAC for 20 plus years. I have backed off that in the last few years.

The AAC is an athletic conference. GA St is way below what is needed. Atlanta would be nice but it would require GA St to begin to dominate the Sun Belt over 5-10 yrs to gain a fan following before the AAC would take them seriously. You can't expect the AAC to take GA St serious when the population of Atlanta doesn't. In fact Kennesaw St (in the Atlanta metro) is growing faster athletically than GA St.
Athletic record has never been a requirement in realignment.

Know your history.

If your league were to expand by 2 or lost 2 members and had to replace them, who would be your top 3 schools to add to your league?

Strictly talking football-only invites because that's what matters. I think it's time to bring our brethren along from last time.

If we had to add a third, maybe some other MWC team like SDSU, AFA, CSU, etc.

Big Chicken - I graduated college in 1966 and moved to Marietta to work for Lockheed. Stayed the first night in a motel next to the big chicken. We had never had Col. Sanders fried chicken back then, but you bought it at the “big chicken”. We were impressed with the food.

I’m surprised that it’s still a landmark.

RE: Expansion question
Honestly, if the western Boise/SDSU/BYU (or AF if BYU isnt interested) thing doesnt work out---I'd be just fine with staying at 11 and just replacing UConn olympic sports with a VCU "non-football" membership. That adds back some of the basketball strength we lost when UConn left---and frankly---the exit of UConn football was addition via subtraction....so the football side of he AAC isnt where the real damage from the UConn exit was felt. Yes, the UConn exit caused a football scheduling issue---but the actual overall strength of AAC football improved with the loss of its bottom team. Its the basketball side of the AAC that lost some gravitas.

I used to think adding a strong BB program like VCU might be a good idea but with how the tourney committee is using the NET, it only benefits the ACC, B1G & the other members of the Priviledged-6. So adding VCU will likely do nothing more than add in-conference competition for our allotted 2 bids.

The AAC isn't getting poached, at least not by more than 2. The TV networks made it very clear to the Big 12 they didn't want nor will they pay for new schools. The only B12 teams of value to the big 2 is Olk and TX, and even that is very unlikely. Same rule applies, why give those schools 50+ mil per year for TV when you already have them for 1/2 that price.

My bad. Poll from the last conference re-shuffle. Still think BYU and Boise deserve to graduate to Power 6.

Sports alone, BYU more than deserves to be in.

My vote for AAC expansion is BYU, Boise and AFA/San Diego in that order.

Pretty much my picks as well. No point in talking expansion beyond those, and I'm even on the fence on adding one of the last two without the first two.

I really wish people would reconsider lumping SDSU in as cavalierly as AFA and Colorado State. For a very important reason. They are a state school in California. California has already tried to restrict its college teams from traveling to "Southern racist states". The California state legislature is a problem we really don't need to have to deal with in the future.
