A list of possible HCs for Lamar.

Jerome Tang actually applied for the NMSU job a few years back.

I wonder what their time frame is? Hurry before the good ones are snapped up or wait and see who is still looking later.

As noted in other forums, so many coaches may be getting "fired" from a job but announce their new job the same, or the next day.

Well it wont be Shanka Smart. Left UT to go to Marquette. I do hope that Lamar gets a good coach.

Johnny Estelle from the list above has ties to Northwestern State coaches as well.

CBSsports.com reports an announcement expected for the new Lamar coach early next week. Not sure how accurate that might be as their is no reports of any kind locally

RE: Lamar Begins Head Coaching Search (MBB)
Realistically what type of coach could Lamar expect to get? Do they have enough pull to get a high DI assistant? A really good, young DII head-coach? A former High DI who is looking to get back.

Alvin Brooks III - Baylor assistant coach
Duane Broussard - TCU assistant coach
Tom Brown - West Texas A&M - Head Coach
JD Byers - VCU assistant coach
Kenny DeWeese - Wyoming assistant coach
Johnny Estelle - Navarro College
Steve Green - South Plains College
Marty Gross - Texas A&M Corpus Christi associate coach
Talvin Hester - Louisiana Tech assistant coach
Ross Hodge - University of North Texas assistant coach
Ulric Maligi - Texas Tech assistant coach
Brent Scott - VCU assistant coach
Jerome Tang - Baylor assistant coach
Brette Tanner - ACU associate coach
KT Turner - SMU associate coach

Based on what I looked up it appears Jans' compensation package is worth maybe $450k. I doubt Lamar can match that right now but the general feeling is maybe $350 is about the best Lamar can offer. It will remain to be seen.

Jans has a retention bonus and is up to about $600k a year.

I was including the retention bonus and since I assume that Jans' is on the high end of conference coaches rounded down. The $ figures just show there is a significant gap for Lamar to climb.

GCU coach's salary is still significantly higher than NMSU's; probably near or over a million per year.

What a hire! And certainly a bit of publicity coming Lamar's way as Coach Brooks is in the Final Four!

Beaumont story on the hire and Lamar potential

Quote: When Alvin Brooks returned to Lamar University’s campus as part of the 2019 Cardinal Hall of Honor class, he couldn’t help but ponder the potential of the men’s basketball program.

He walked into the 10,000-seat Montagne Center, where banners from Lamar’s Sweet 16 run hang in the rafters. Brooks was a point guard on that 1980 team.

I am not sure how this will work out. I am hopeful that Coach Brooks will do very well, but I had kind of hoped they would hire an up and comer who might be able to relate better to the players. I will admit that Brooks could bring some tradition from the glory days back to the program, but then again they tried that before with Billy Tubbs. He may however, be able to inspire some alumni to open their wallets. As someone who attended Lamar, I am cautiously optimistic. The program has been down for way too long.

I wasn't expecting someone his age.
