Lamar MBB Coaching Search (Hired Alvin Brooks)
Another opening in the WAC.

Lamar job with a new league should attract some interest. This is a community that has historically supported basketball
—-
BEAUMONT, Texas – Tic Price will not return as Lamar University head men's basketball coach announced Director of Athletics Marco Born Sunday afternoon. The move comes following a season that saw the Cardinals go 10-18 (.357) overall and finish sixth in the conference tournament. Price has served as the Cardinals' head coach for the past seven seasons.

"I want to thank Coach Price for all that he has done for the Lamar men's basketball program over the last seven years," said Born. "We wish him and his family the best in their future endeavors."

A national search has begun for Price's replacement. No further comment will be made at this time.

Lamar will need to step it up if they want to be a major player in the WAC. There are a lot of good "winning" coaches in the new WAC.

Price served Lamar well in getting the Cards out of the bottom of the well dug by Pat Knight and maybe partially by his predecessor. After seven years Price has been unable to get Lamar back to the top group of the SLC. I hope Lamar can make a good hire and keep the best players on the current team to build to the next level.

Lamar should look at a high major assistant coaches or a low major winning head coaches.

NMSU's former head coaches Marvin Menzies and Paul Weir are currently on the market for a job.

I don't know enough about Menzies, but I have read enough on this message board to not want Weir. There are other coaches available that were highly successful with mid major programs that are currently unemployed after not having the same success a a power conference school. Archie Miller and Greg Marshall come to mind even though Marshall may have some baggage. Also these two coaches would have to take a significant pay cut to go to Lamar.

Paul Weir was actually a joke for Aggie fans whereas Marvin Menzies is actually a legit option for a head coach if he were interested. He is a excellent recruiter who brought Pascal Siakam to NMSU. Although he wasn't Aggie fans cup of tea (a fanbase that likes more fiery coaches), Menzies does knows how to build a successful winning program. In 12 years of coaching, he only had two losing seasons; with five trips to the NCAA tournament and one to the NIT.

Was Menzie out of coaching this past year. I couldn't find anything for this year on his bio and he was not listed on the GCU staff where his bio indicated was his last stop?

Last year Majerle got fired, the pandemic hit. Got kind of lost what happened to Menzies. IDK if he had a multi year contract with GCU. If he did, he could still be being paid by them. Also when he was fired from UNLV, he had two years left on his contract. So he might start looking for a HC job again here.

Menzies sat out this basketball season but I think he is in the market for a Head Coaching job now. He is on a list of prospective candidates for the San Jose State job...

Lamar isn't anything to write home about today, but has the facilities to help draw players. With the right coach they could move up quickly.

They have some good history. And this coach had some moderate success several years. They will attract some good candidates.

Is UTRGV in the market for a head coach or are they sticking with their interim head coach?

They haven't made an announcement but I think they'll stick with Steadman.

I believe it was announced that had officially posted the job as open, but that might be a formality.

The UTRGV job is posted here:

It's also posted on InsideHigherEd. As you say it could be a formality, but who knows.

I doubt it. Last go around he was interviewed for the head coaching spot and got passed over for Hill. Now with a different AD he probably want's his own guy.

Texas Tech assistant Ulric Maligi is on the UTRGV list, and I’ve also heard that he’s involved at Lamar. I’ve heard from a bunch of guys that Bob Beaudine from Eastman + Beaudine is helping with this one. Beaudine just wrapped up the Boston College search.

That would be interesting as he had good times with Larry Brown and is an incredibly good guy.

KT Turner mentions at Lamar too. I really like him as well.
