i have a soft spot for ORU: have fond memories of watching them on that one religious station out of canton (when i was living in NE Ohio in the 80s.) used to air all their games.

1 down, 2 to go!!!

RE: NCAA Tournament
OSU was & is the most overrated D1 team. During the regular season, Cleveland State almost knocked them off in Columbus (naturally). KSU should schedule OSU only if it is a home & home series, which will never happen. Would also like to see KSU meet them on a neutral court like Rocket Mortgage Field House. Would draw a large crowd, & it could be an OSU home game to keep them happy.

Agree on being overrated. That 4 game losing streak near the end of the season exposed them. 18-4 became 18-8 pretty quickly. Over the years it pays to have the Big 10 underperforming in your bracket. They tend to be over seeded.

Any team that allows Ohio to go on a 40-0 run is always capable of laying an egg.

I'm always glad to see Bob Huggins lose. That "Ted Cruz" look he's sporting isn't a good look. And he looks bigger than ever. Not wise for a man who has already had a heart attack. I knew his dad and liked him.

My guess is that the power programs will attempt to outlaw praying during tournament games. Too many church schools beating their butts. Sister Jean will soon be banned.

I believe that the "power programs", though certainly better in general than good mid-major teams, are overrated. By overrated I mean that they are more vulnerable to being beaten or being in a tight game on a neutral court by good mid-majors than the general sports public and many sports pundits like to think.

https://sports.yahoo.com/why-this-may-al...12534.html

The above article is interesting, but almost by definition an "upset" should be a fairly rare event, which clearly they aren't. I maintain that much of the public and most sports pundits consistently either overrate certain types of teams, underestimate other types of teams, or some combination of both.

I feel like the lack of non conference games made it so the seeding is more of a crap shoot this year. Tough to really gauge a "strength of schedule" when everyone is playing, almost entirely, in their own conference. Would've loved to have gotten in this year. Seemed like the tournament was ripe for cinderella runs this year.

Here's the deal ... the seeding/pairings this year look the same as any other year. No-con or not, these guys are going to seed these PC teams high to justify putting them in the tournament at all.

Every year we see a number of 3-4-5 seeds win their conference tournaments for auto bids, but regular season champs are sent home. I would loves to see an 'unwritten' rule where reg-season champs from Top 12 leagues get at-larges. If that happened, along with no conference getting more than 6 teams total in the field, would make for a more of a true tournament.

If that happened, along with no conference getting more than 6 teams total in the field, would make for a more of a true tournament.

Prior to this year there have been twenty-two 11 seeds to make the sweet 16, twenty-one 12 seeds, and one 15 seed. This year we have two 11s, one 12, and one 15 in the sweet 16 (plus a 6, 7, and 8). The last tournament (2019) the sweet 16 was four 1's, four 2's, four 3's, three 4's, and a 12. The last time multiple double digit seeds made the sweet 16 was 2016 when one 10 and one 11 made it. So, clearly, seedings in this tournament are not the same quality as normal years.

If you're strictly looking at where p5 schools got seeded vs non p5 teams sure it's similar, but that's not what I was talking about.

Perfect example: Loyola . They were ranked in the top 20 at season's end and NET 11. Even conservatively, they should have legitimately been 6 seed if not a 5. Hell, if they are a legitimate top 15 team, they should have been a 4 seed. But they are a 8 instead. Illinois should be pissed: they should have gotten to play a true 8 seed, but instead get waxed by a 4-5 quality team, which makes their defeat not such a surprise.

I agree. Over the years I’ve noticed teams like Loyola being seeded two to three slots below what their RPI or NET ranking infers. This year being 11th they should have been a 3 seed. So a 5 or 6 would be expected. Who knows why they dropped to 8. Maybe they do such things to promote upsets. Those seem to help their ratings. Watching the women’s tournament where the first 17 games were won by the favorite I thought they were about to cry when a lower seed finally won.

Not a good tournament for the Big 10, other than Michigan. I'm not surprised, though.

RE: NCAA Tournament
I believe the reason they seed the deserving mid-major teams lower than their ranking (e.g., Loyola at 8) is to make it easier for teams from the power conferences to advance in the tournament. A lower seed means you are playing better teams and more likely to be bounced early.

ESPN speculated they put them at 8 to create an Illinois vs. Chicago match-up. Helps those TV ratings.

So, the Cinderella teams now are UCLA, Oregon State and USC. How boring.

It’s even worse in the women’s tournament. The “worst” remaining seed is 6 Texas. All others are the usual suspects: UCONN, Stanford, Baylor, etc.

Whatever happened to the Tennessee women? They're still good, of course, but dropped way off the last 10 seasons.
