In terms of making it back to the NCAA's, we do need to upgrade our non-conference schedule, but hopefully that will be possible in a regular (non covid-dominated) season in 2021-22. We also need to fill out the roster with more bodies, and hopefully transfers.
Someone like this player (Division 2 rebounding leader Lilly Ritz of Wheeling University) might be completely under the radar but (a) you can't tell me she wouldn't love to play at a school like Rice and (b) someone who averaged 16 rebounds a game as a sophomore and 17 a game as a junior can get it done at the D1 level too. She's already announced she's transferring for her senior season.

In terms of next year's roster, right now we have 2 open scholarships. But we've tended to lose end of bench players for several seasons running so it wouldn't shock me if 1 or 2 players don't come back. We really need some inside help to be in contention for the NCAA's IMO. The backcourt and wing players are NCAA quality. Maybe McCurry will be a factor for her senior year - that would help.
Austin and McCurry are the only ones that didn't see a lot of play throughout the year. I think they both stay. We don't yet know how Maya is as she didn't see any action this year.
FYI, according to this site, Rice's 2021 class ranks #70 with No. 164 6'0/F Jordan Hobbs, No. 175 6'0/PG Trinity Gooden, and No. 265, 6'1/F Malia Fisher. Charlotte is at top of CUSA at #59.

Early but Rice is at #28 for 2022 with No. 134 5'8"/G Jada Brown.

Langley also rumored to be the frontrunner for Auburn, from another Twitter source that is definitely more reliable than the Washington source.

Same source now saying that Langley has turned down the Auburn job offer. I should add that Oklahoma is supposedly announcing their head coach hire today. That, Auburn, and Washington are the big jobs. First big hurdle to keeping her is today.

The top candidates, in addition to Tina, according to this March 17 ESPN article are:
Quote:Johnnie Harris: The 2018 WBCA national assistant of the year, Harris has worked at very successful programs such as Arkansas, Texas A&M (including during the 2011 national championship season), Mississippi State and now Texas. Might she decide it's time to move to head coaching? The Pine Bluff, Arkansas, native began her coaching career as an assistant at Arkansas Little Rock in 1998.
Dionnah Jackson-Durrett: The former Oklahoma guard (2001-2005) has been an assistant to Vic Schaefer at Mississippi State and now Texas, along with Harris. The St. Louis native played briefly in the WNBA and then overseas before starting her coaching career in 2010 as an assistant at Southeast Missouri State. ...
Britney Brown: Another former Sooners guard (2003-07), she is also currently an assistant in the Big 12, in her fifth season at TCU this year. Brown is an Oklahoma native who started her post-playing career as a video coordinator for her alma mater in 2007, then worked at Nebraska and Tulsa before going to TCU. Like Harris and Jackson-Durrett, she also might be ready to move into a head-coaching role.
Michelle Clark-Heard: She was 154-47 in six seasons at her alma mater, Western Kentucky, before taking over at Cincinnati in 2018. ...

FTR, the Sooners just announced their new MEN's basketball coach: Loyola-Chicago's Porter Moster.

Unrelated to WBB, but Moser moving to OU is why Gonzaga is a unicorn and it's all but impossible to build up a mid-major program. About as good of a mid-major program there is, reportedly offering him a very long extension and good money, and he still bails for what is an average Big 12 team. If you're Loyola now, chances are you have a bunch of kids transfer out and by 2-3 years you're back to the middle of the Missouri Valley.
Also definitely possible that with Moser being hired, WBB gets put on the back-burner. Still, Auburn and Oklahoma feel like the biggest obstacles to keeping her.

Auburn is hiring Mississippi State Associate Head Coach Johnnie Harris.
That leaves just Oklahoma and Washington as the big available jobs.

Wow, Langley takes the Washington job. Gotta admit, I would've preferred Oklahoma or Auburn. I get it's the Pac 12 and the fan support is fine, but I was expecting a bigger job.

Charlie Creme is an absolute idiot. He has at least 3 teams in the first version of the 2022 NCAA Bracketology in as at-large teams that played in the women's NIT (including Ole Miss as a 10 seed). But no Rice (he has Charlotte winning the AQ bid next year for CUSA). I'm not even counting the NIT teams that are picked to be auto qualifiers, just the at-large bids. I may have missed 1 or 2 teams also.
If someone can post his email, I'll be happy to send him an email telling him how much of a tool he is.

...I think that's a totally defensible decision given that it looks like we're losing our two best players and have a first-time head coach taking the helm? Not saying we won't be decent next year but I certainly don't think we're a lock.

1. Wiggins hasn't left yet, and she's not our second best player either. I place both Schwartz and Smith ahead of her as key contributors.
2. We've got another good recruiting class coming in.
3. Yes, we have first time head coach coming in who just happens to have been the Associate Head Coach the past two seasons at a Top 10 nationally ranked program. Not exactly a totally unproven commodity.
Creme has consistently dismissed us-- or at least undervalued us-- over the past 5 seasons.

Eh, I don't think there's any issue with his predictions. On paper, Charlotte probably looks better than Rice right now. They won 9 conference games last year and they bring in three power conference transfers, including one who played 30+ mpg at top 25 Kentucky. Their star senior who averaged 20+ points last season decided to come back. They're going to be good. And Rice has a bunch of unknowns. Mulkey is gone, Wiggins might be gone, we have a new coach without a staff, and we aren't that deep in the first place. Rice has legit holes to fill right now - we had two trustworthy ballhandlers last year, one of them's gone, and we're losing the anchor of our offense and defense.
That said, I don't think anybody here actually thinks an ESPN analyst cares about Rice or smaller conferences. Women's basketball is still growing - we're not yet at the stage where smaller programs get enough attention.

He has Baylor as a 1 seed and they don't have a coach right now (and way more question marks than we do). Baylor will be in the NCAA tournament but they're going to have a major dropoff.
To his credit, he doesn't have Syracuse in the tournament.
I'll let it go for now as it's super early to get caught up in things like these. If we get some D1 transfers though (and Wiggins comes back), we need to be picked first in the CUSA preseason polls. Charlotte has some pieces but they were 10-12 overall (and lost all 3 postseason games that they played). The Duke transfer they got could be good (if healthy) - the two Kentucky transfers aren't proven talents (the post was more of a defensive player than an offensive threat and the other one was a bench player).
