Why would they be calling Texas and Oklahoma? Interest in West Coast football would likely be even lower in those states than they are in the existing PAC 12 footprint.

This is why the PAC is more likely to be raided by the B12, than the other way around IMO.

Why would OU and UT be interested? 9pm tipoffs when they play at USC and UCLA. I don’t think so.

If I’m Oklahoma’s AD, I would listen to their pitch. The PAC or USC/UCLA’s offer would need to be really attractive. After the rejection of OU & OSU in 2012, I imagine that key folks know each other and could expedite through the small talk.

Oklahoma could benefit from a dedicated network for their Tier 3 content. Also, having the Cali schools as a balance to Texas could be a long-term stabilizer to conference politics. Finally, there is strength in numbers (greater content) when negotiating with media partners.

Now is the perfect time to listen to offers. Oklahoma’s leverage is greater. The PAC needs passionate fans and markets.

Maybe, but why on earth would Texas and Oklahoma leave the Big 12 for the PAC?

$2.7M each is about what the ACCN is expected to pay this year... for a partial year... with a pandemic on the back half... I'm thinking the ACCN gets to $5M faster than the PTN does (e.g. next year).

If they get more money from the networks to do so, they have to consider it. Otherwise, of course they won't.

Why would the networks want to give Texas and Oklahoma more money to have them leave the Big 12 for the Pac 12? Combine Texas/Oklahoma with the California schools, Oregon, and Washington and not have to pay the Little Eight.

In Texas the add could be Houston to get some east Texas eyeballs and a great recruiting area and a good athletic department. But who to partner them with? SMU?

The ACCN is owned and operated by a media giant (ESPN) and is available on DIRECTV, while the Pac-12 Network is owned and operated by the Pac-12 and is not available on DIRECTV. It is easy to see why the Pac-12 Network struggles.

The Pac-12 is busy calling around for a new commissioner. So they won't be calling OU and Texas. UT has the Longhorn Network and their $15 million a year in revenue from that, so they don't need anything from the Pac-12. Wilner's article is old news. Everybody knows how badly the Pac-12 Network is performing and it has nothing to do with a lack of fan interest and everything to do with the incompetence of their current and soon to be unemployed commissioner, Larry Scott.

Realignment is not in anyone's self interest at this time.

They're going to try to get more money with an expanded playoff.

RE: Pac-12 Network Payouts
Oklahoma can not trust the P12 to deliver. They are safer in the long run with Texas. When you look at the P12 they have two schools that really add nothing - Washington State and Oregon State.
Stanford, Cal, UCLA, and USC can not politically abide Baylor. They can't academically abide Kansas State and Oklahoma State. They will not abide West Virginia.

To make anything work you will need something like the Pacific 18. The eastern division has to be Texas, OU, Kansas, TT, and two of Iowa State/Nebraska/Oklahoma State. Reuniting Nebraska and OU would be likely make money for all. All the old Pac 8 would probably welcome Nebraska fans. You might split the remaining 12 ASU/UA/Cal/UCLA/Stanford/USC or Colorado/Utah/USC/UCLA/Arizona/ASU being the southwest division. A four team playoff with the three champions and a wild card, played at the home stadium will likely yeild in any one year two of Oklahoma, USC, Texas, and Oregon hosting with Nebraska, Washington, and Utah often being added to the wild card pool. You play the title game in Vegas.

That would make the west coast relevant again and give something larger for Texas to attempt to lord over.

I have to be pessimistic here, but the PAC 12 is on the decline and they aren’t going to recover. Texas and Oklahoma would be wise to cast their lots with the Big Ten and SEC.

Texas and OU are in the catbird seat. They don't need the Pac-12 and their declining revenue. They don't need the Big 10 where Ohio State gets everything their way. They don't need the SEC where Alabama and Georgia call all the shots.

Your kidding right? The Pac-12 NEEDS large population states with viewers that actually care about football--thats why. The real question is why in the hell would Texas and Oklahoma actually agree to any Pac-12 offer? Hey, come add a bunch of excessive travel to play schools your fans dont care about---oh---and you'll do it for a smaller share of a smaller smaller pie. I suspect thats not likely to be the most enticing offer Texas and Oklahoma will see over the next few years.

The pie won't be smaller. Any reasonable market analysis would conclude a conference with Texas, Oklahoma, and four California schools, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and two Arizona schools would be worth more than a conference with Texas, Oklahoma, and a lot of second choice state schools and irrelevant private schools. The question is how much more will UT and OU get joining the Pac-12 than they will staying in the Big 12? Travel would certainly be an issue. I agree the SEC and Big Ten would be stupid not to offer Texas/Oklahoma invites either but they are stronger conferences that don't need the schools and are less likely to take Big 12 dead weight such as Texas Tech and/or Oklahoma State to seal the deal while the Pac 12 might be desperate enough to do so. The reason I think the Pac-12 is not out of the race is if the SEC and Big Ten say no to Texas Tech and the Pac-12 says yes (the Pac 16 rumors supposedly included Texas Tech).

The Big Ten told Texas in 2010 they had a “Tech” problem and I’m sure nothing has changed since then. The Pac-10 tolerated Texas Tech when expansion was being discussed because they were getting the biggest prize of them all: Texas. When Texas A&M was sending signals to the SEC in 2011, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State asked the Pac-12 if they were interested, they were told no if Texas wasn’t on board. Bottom line, expansion starts and ends with Texas.

The pie will be smaller than those two could get elsewhere---including staying in the Big-12. Dont forget, Oklahoma gets 7 or 8 million a year for its 3rd tier rights and Texas gets a whopping 15 million a year (or more) for its third tier rights due to the LHN deal. Both schools lose that income if they jump to the Pac-12---or any other conference with a designated conference network for that matter. The Pac-12 has ZERO chance of luring Texas or Oklahoma. This is not 2011. The calculus has changed. The conferences that might be able to do it are the SEC and Big-10.....and Im not even sure the money would work there either. It would depend on what a new Big-12 stand alone deal looks like. I think its much more likely that the Big-12 loioks to poach a couple of schools from the Pac-12 than the other way around.
