RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
MAC Transfer Update:

Zach Gunn - Transferring from Ball State to Lenoir-Rhyne (Hickory, NC - D-II) - RS Junior - 6’6” - PF - 3* recruit from Hamilton Southeastern HS (Fishers, IN) - Gunn played 3 seasons at Ball State. In his RS Junior season, Gunn played in 17 games (3 starts) averaging 10.4 minutes and 3.4 ppg/2.2 rpg shooting 43.5% from the field (40% 3PT - 14 of 35) and 80% FT (4 of 5). After Gunn’s sophomore season, it appeared he was on his way to being a pretty productive player for Ball State but an injury which derailed his 3rd season seems to have also set him back from a production standpoint. Coming out of HS, Gunn received additional offers from Butler, Saint Louis, Indiana State, Indiana, and IUPUI.

Davin Zeigler - Transferring from Bowling Green to Indian Hills CC (Ottumwa, IA) - Sophomore - 6’3” - SG - Zeigler was a 2* recruit from Benedictine HS in Cleveland and received additional offers out of HS from Wright State, UC Riverside, Cleveland State, and Youngstown State. In two seasons as BGSU, Zeigler was a regular as a freshman playing in 24 games (8 starts) averaging 10.6 minutes and 2.2 ppg and 1.3 rpg shooting 29.6% from the field (27.3% 3PT - 3 of 11). As a sophomore though, Zeigler only played in 6 games with 0 starts.

Chanse Robinson - Transferring from Buffalo to Grambling - Freshman - 6’1” - PG - 3.5* recruit from Lincoln Prep School in Grambling, LA - Chanse’s transfer was reported back in early January and reports stated it was due to “personal reasons'' and at the time the article was published, they could not confirm if he was still enrolled in school at the time. In his one and only season at Buffalo, Robinson played in 1 game, played 10 minutes and didn’t score. Coming out of HS, Robinson received additional offers from TCU, Tulane, Grambling, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana, Seton Hall, Houston, Wichita State, VCU, Ole Miss, Western Kentucky and Missouri. Depending on how things played out, I’m kind of surprised he didn’t end up at one of the Louisiana schools who were interested and maybe he regretted his decision and...honestly..who wouldn’t grow real tired of a Buffalo winter when you’re from Louisiana?

Robinson had legal issues in Louisiana and left Buffalo before the weather turned cold.

NIU Transfer Update:

Not that anyone cares...

Tavon Jones - Transferring from NIU to Merrimack - Junior - 6’3” - SG - 3* recruit from Linden HS (Linden, NJ) - Jones started his collegiate career at Odessa College (Odessa, TX) before transferring to NIU. At NIU he………..didn’t play. Not once. So…anyway...coming out of HS, Jones received offers from Saint Joseph’s, St. Peter’s, Seton Hall, Stony Brook, Buffalo, Hofstra, Niagra, Quinnipiac, Massachusetts, St. Bonaventure, and Eastern Kentucky.

MAC Transfer Update:

I may have gotten this wrong. Bissanthe entered the portal but now I'm seeing reports he has enrolled in school at CMU. I'm sure whatever it is will get figured out and I'll just repost it again.

Ralph Bissainthe - Staying at Central Michigan - RS Junior - 6’7” - SF - 2* recruit from McArthur HS (North Miami/Hollywood, FL) - Bissainthe played a year at UIC and then transferred to Florida Southwestern State (Ft. Myers - JUCO) for a year before transferring to Central Michigan where he’s been the past two seasons. Last year, as a RS Junior, Bissainthe played in 23 games (5 starts) averaging 22.6 minutes and 7.7 ppg/5 rpg shooting 37.9% from the floor (32.4% 3PT - 24 of 74) and 61.1% FT (44 of 72). There’s a good change Bissainthe has graduated as he’s spent 4 years in college already and could be moving on as a grad transfer with 2 years of eligibility remaining. He seemed to be a decent contributor for the Chips but with the change in the HC position, he probably figured now was as good a time as any to move on himself. Coming out HS, Bissainthe received his only offer from UIC and coming out of JUCO, it was the same situation with CMU.

NIU Recruiting Update:

Ibbe Klintman - Committed to Central Arkansas - 6’8” - SF - 2* recruit from Scotland Campus Sports (apparently coach has himself a contact…) born in Malmō, Sweden - Okay, so I was actually able to find a couple videos on this one. One had him playing for Scotland Campus Sports. I take it they’re the Cadets. The other video...um….was pretty low quality but I think he was playing for a club team that I’m about 100% sure was in Europe somewhere. They had ridiculous uniforms too, but also a very European feeling to them. Anyway, he’s 6’8” and was often running the point. He can dribble, shoot a decent amount from the outside and can go to the basket. He’s got a long, athletic frame that should carry muscle well. And he can jump. Another intriguing guy but it’s really hard to form any kind of opinion with such little video or information available. Anyway, Klintman has received one additional offer and which was from Central Arkansas.

Could he think that he just signed with the UCLA Bruins?

Nothing against Conway, AR.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
NIU Recruiting Update:

This one stings... I was hoping we'd get this guy.

I'm thinking Burno is going to have to get some more offers out at this point.

Chase McKey - Committed to Marshall - 6’9” - PF - 2* recruit from The-Skill-Factory Prep (Woodstock, GA - previously attended Johns Creek HS in Johns Creek, GA) - McKey is tall and long but he’s quite athletic. He’s not overly explosive although he shows better ball handling skills than I initially thought. I’d like to see some more bulk (he basically built like Levi Bradley...maybe a tad thicker/more muscular, but not much) but I’m not sure he will. With that said, he is a post player. He plays around the rim and can do so either as a post player or by driving the lane. He can also finish with either hand. He uses his length well and couples that with good jumping ability. I didn’t see much of his jump shot but what I did see was a real high...like super high release at the top of his shot. This kid is 6’9” and holds the ball well above his head when he shoots from the outside. Maybe a bit too high and he’ll have to bring it down a bit, but I’d probably rather teach a kid to bring the ball down a bit as opposed to raising it.

Overall, I like this kids makeup, how he moves with the ball and how he finishes at the rim. I didn’t see any defense from him but he’s athletic enough and showed enough savvy I think he can play defense at the D-I level in the post. While it’d be nice for him to weigh a bit more, he’s stronger than he looks and could be a disruptive body inside.

Coming out of HS, McKey received additional offers from Old Dominion and Winthrop and coming out of prep school, he has received one other offer from Hampton. He’s obviously been noticed by a certain level of program in the southeast. NIU marks the first school to offer him a scholarship outside of that region. It could be quite the savvy move.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
NIU Down the Road Recruiting Update (2023 - HS Sophomore):

Jalen Griffith - HS Sophomore (2023) - 5’10” - PG - 2* recruit from Simeon HS (Chicago) - This kid is really good. He’s pretty small but, being only a sophomore, he might grow a little but I wouldn’t expect too much. He could probably put on a little muscle but I’m not sure he frame would hold any more very well. But again, he’s 15 (or 16) so maybe. Anyway, this kid has handles. All of them. I’ve watched videos of him from this past year all the way back to his 8th grade year and he’s so damn smooth and clever with the ball. He can dribble and pass his way into and past anything. And then he can also finish around players much bigger than him with some ridiculously acrobatic plays. As an 8th grader, he’d dominate some of these all star games and just start showing off and it was crazy. He’d go to the rim and bring the ball under his leg and make a layup in traffic. He’d spin one direction then another, put the ball behind his back and then do a reverse layup. Kids couldn’t keep up with him. Not even close. It was a little different in the most recent videos but he’s still superior to his competition and he was delivering passes to the bigs that showed creativity and quick decision making. He’s not electric in his first step like I first anticipated but he’s just always fast, smooth and clever. This would be a hell of a grab for Coach Burno in a couple years. I can only see the attention on this kid going straight up. He goes to Simeon so he’s already going to be playing on a national stage, so Coach has his work cut out for him with this one. But, being a sophomore, I like how Burno is setting his sights high and (presumably) knowing that the NIU hoops program is a much more attractive destination for a guy like him than it is now. Luckily, being so young, Griffith probably has absolutely no opinion about NIU. Which can only be a good thing.

Jalen has one other offer currently and, wouldn’t ya know...it’s from Western Illinois.

It's nice to finally see NIU recruiting the Chicago Public Schools. I maybe wrong for saying this but I don't think Patton or Monty ever got a CPS recruit.

Sometimes I think recruiting CPS is overrated. Should they do it? Yes. It is imperative to focus on it? Not at all.

I did like that Montgomery was (at least saying he was) trying to hit up the suburbs. There's a ton of talent there and probably more than in the city.

But how much fun would it be to out recruit this kid from Irvin?

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
MAC Transfer Update:

Greg Lee - Transferring from Western Michigan - Undecided on transfer destination - RS SR - 6’9” - PF - 2* recruit from Westside HS (Houston, TX - born in Rockford, IL) - Lee started his collegiate career with 3 seasons at CSU Bakersfield and then transferred to Western Michigan this past season where he played and started in 21 games averaging 27 minutes and 13 points shooting 50.4% from the field (24.3% 3PT - 9 of 37) and 66% FT (31 of 47). This transfer seems like it was inevitable but for him to have taken so long to enter the portal is curious. Coming out of HS, Lee had no other additional offers.

Mileek McMillian - Transferring from Valparaiso to Western Michigan - Senior - 6’8” - PF - 2* recruit from Merrillville HS (Merrillville, IN) - McMillian has played 4 seasons at Valparaiso. As a senior, McMillian played 25 games (13 starts) averaging 12.1 minutes and 3.4 ppg shooting 33% from the field (24.5% 3PT - 13 of 53) and 60% FT (6 of 10). Maybe this is the replacement of losing Lee earlier in the day? Coming out of HS, McMillian received additional offers from Kansas City and Eastern Illinois.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
NIU Transfer Update:

Darweshi Hunter - Transferring from Weber State to NIU - Sophomore - 6’5” - SG - 2* recruit from Dohn Prep at Dohn Community HS (Cincinnati - born in Phoenix, AZ) - Hunter played his first season at Central State (Wilberforce, OH - D-II) where he led the conference in scoring and was 2nd among freshman in D-II scoring averaging 20.7 ppg and 6.1 rpg. At Weber State, Hunter played in 7 games (0 starts) averaging 6.3 minutes and 2.9 ppg shooting 46.7% from the field (71.4% 3PT - 5 of 7) and 50% FT (1 of 2). I’m not sure why the limited playing time. I found a number of articles that seemed to be pretty excited about the NCAA granting the blanket waiver to transfers this year which was allowing him to be eligible. But, whether it be injury or COVID-19 or whatever, he didn't see the floor much. Hunter is a nice looking big guard. He’s 6’5”, which isn’t huge, but he’s athletically built and looks like a man on the floor. He’s not overly athletic in a way some other recruits have been. He’s much more of a perimeter/jump shooter who can go to the rim but it’s not his calling card. He also looks to play sound defense and will grab rebounds. This, in my opinion, is a really good transfer to get. He’s got 2 years remaining on his eligibility and knows how to score and can stretch a defense from outside. He’ll also be hard to guard for smaller players as he’s pretty tall for the position and has a nice high set shot. Coming out of HS, Hunter received additional offers from Central Connecticut, Lincoln (D-II - Chester County, PA), Purdue Northwest (D-II - Hammond/Westville, IN) and Assumption (D-II - Worcester, MA). Coming out of Central State, he received additional offers from St. Bonaventure, Robert Morris, Drake, Bryant and Wright State.
