RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
Hankerson was on the “Huskies on Tap” Podcast earlier this week and sounded like he is coming back. He is looking forward to working with Coach Burno and likes how he is there for the players outside of basketball as well. He said he is looking forward to next year. Good interview.

I really should listen to that podcast more. I just don't know how to carve out more time for it.

I'm really not looking forward to the day when I am forced to put Crump in to the starting lineup...

Needless to say, with two guys already committed (an incoming freshman and sophomore) and 5 more spots to fill, this is going to become Coach Burno's team a lot faster than it initially appeared. As it stands, NIU will be returning 7 players (8 if you count Kamron Battle). So, if we're going with an 8 count, 3 of those players are walk-ons (Battle, Hankerson, Beane).

The roster is getting real thin. On one hand, that's exciting. On the other..it's also frightening. Granted, I highly doubt Crump, Makuoi, or Okanu are going anywhere. Kueth is probably not being courted by anyone either.

Hankerson and Beane can do whatever they want as walk-ons and with the coaching staff still up in the air, I'd say Beane is about 50/50 in whether or not he stays. Hankerson will probably just stick around to finish his degree.

Actually, maybe Hankerson and/or Beane get scholarships at this point. I could see one of them getting one at the very least. I mean, I'd probably rather have Hankerson on the team than some transfer and, considering we're still NIU, I can't assume I'll be as excited about all of the recruits this year like I was Kon.

Anyway...like I keep saying, things are going to be interesting for the next couple of weeks.

Are you sure Beane isn’t on scholarship already? Verbal Commits has him listed as a scholarship player.

Yeah, I know. But I'm 99.9% confident he's not on scholarship. The math doesn't work if he's not.

Yeah, I know. But I'm 99.9% confident he's not on scholarship. The math doesn't work if he's not.

To explain:

Last year's team:

Seniors on scholarship (3):
Zaire Mateen
Nathan Scott
Chris Johnson

Juniors on scholarship (4):
Tavon Jones
Zool Kueth
Adong Makuoi
Kingsley Okanu

Sophomores (5):
Kaleb Thornton
Tyler Cochran
Anthony Crump
Justin Lee
Keenan Cole

Okay. So, maybe my math was wrong. It probably was. I was thinking last year, they were at 13 and then added Crump late. But the math is working with Beane under scholarship so I suppose he is.

But I feel like there was a bunch of conversation here last year about Beane getting a state employee discount due to his dad (which was probably what he was also getting as SIU). But, unless I'm missing someone, the math does check with Beane on scholarship.

Mea culpa.

Not sure Beane requires a scholarship as long as his dad remains on the coaching staff. As I recall, at one time, the children of university employees attended tuition free and, obviously, he would have the option to live at home. Not sure if that is still true. Does anyone know?

Edit. Found some information on the internet. It looks like his Dad’s time at SIU was transferable and he would qualify for a 50% tuition waiver. I wouldn’t think they would burn a scholarship for the remaining 50%, so I would think he is NOT on scholarship by design.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
NIU Recruiting Update:

Down the Road Recruiting:

Derrick Claxton
- HS JUNIOR (2022) - 6’6” - SG - 2* recruit from Inderkum HS (Sacramento, CA) - I’m not as excited about this guy as some of the others. He’s got decent length and decent jumping ability but nothing that really stood out to me as special. There’s a number of short videos of him on his YouTube channel and the thing that stood out to me was...he’s pretty good against guys his size and smaller. That’s not the greatest compliment for a guy who’s 6’6”. In other words, I wasn’t overly impressed with the guys I saw him playing against (most of which were AAU games). There’s something about him, though, that reminds me of Jason Preston. He actually looks a decent amount like him and is built almost exactly the same as him. Now, I do know that when Preston left HS, he was like 6’1 or 2” and then sprouted once he got to Ohio. This kid is already 6’6” as a junior and I don’t see much growth left on him. I also don’t see a ton of strength being added as he has a slight frame although he does play into contact and uses the strength he has...which appears to be more than he looks like. I only saw one or two jump shots and they were both fine. I’d like him to quicken it up but he’s got time for that as he’s just a junior. Anyway, with 5 (or 6...did we ever...do we ever???...figure out the Darius Beane situation???) they aren’t all going to be exciting like Noah Kon so a guy like Claxton could be quite useful. And being a couple years away, there’s another year to develop. Currently, Claxton has one additional offer from UC-Riverside.

Cost savings. On the books as a full scholarship ride but Athletics (or Athletics’ budget) is just paying half the cost while this “University Employee’s children” fund picks up the the other half.

Not that it really matters. It’s smart actually, considering Beane is a legit D-I player.

I understand the cost savings, however, you are burning a valuable scholarship slot for very limited additional financial benefit to the player. I would think it would make more sense to use it for another player. I suppose it depends on which side of the table you sit.

Yeah, I get what you’re saying but the financial benefit isn’t to the player as he’s a legit D-I talent. He’d be getting a full scholarship somewhere if not at NIU. Since NIU Athletics is hurting so much in the wallet it’s a perk to get some relief (as limited as it is) to the budget.

Now if he was burning a scholarship and wasn’t a D-I level player, that’d be another thing. If Burno decides not to renew his scholarship and he wants to stay on as a walk-on to get the tuition benefit if he cannot find a school to transfer to that will offer him a full ride, that’s cool. Of course, this may depend on his Dad still being a University employee.

Again, not that it matters. It’s not likely that the savings went into the equation when offering the scholarship.

Do scholarships work that way?

Meaning, is there actual money that is doled out by the athletic program to the university to cover tuition or is it like comped tickets to a show or sporting event where, no money changes hands but the student just goes for free?

I mean, tuition is based on residency status anyway so it's not like a plane ticket or whatever where one butt in one seat = "X" amount of money. It depends on where that butt calls home. Tuition is arbitrary and for "scholarship athletes", is tuition just $0? But, being that you have to label it something, it's called an athletic scholarship.

Because, I would assume, if the scholarships actually cost the athletic department money, they were be examples of teams not being allowed to use all of their scholarships due to financial restraints.

I very well could be wrong. I didn't have an athletic scholarship so I have no clue how they work (and I'm sure 99.9999% of athletes don't know how they actually work either).

With that said, you mentioned something about "renewing" Beane's scholarship but, I'm pretty certain that's now how it works. If you get a scholarship, its yours until you decide to give it up (or expelled from school or kicked out of the program for some violation of some sort).

Again, I don't know any of this for certain and I'd love to know we'd have this whole Darius Beane scholarship situation understood by the time he is done playing at NIU (assuming it's after next season). Because this is one of the most confusing things I've seen in a while.

As for why Hankerson never got a scholarship (which was also questionable), my best guess was that he got some kind of academic scholarship which made giving him an athletic scholarship redundant and he and Monty were cool with it. I mean, it's nice having 1 (or maybe 2) starters on the team not taking up scholarships especially when those are 2 of your 3 best players. And a luxury that we should definitely not get accustomed to.

Edit. Found some information on the internet. It looks like his Dad’s time at SIU was transferable and he would qualify for a 50% tuition waiver. I wouldn’t think they would burn a scholarship for the remaining 50%, so I would think he is NOT on scholarship by design.

Athletic Scholarships are renewed on a yearly basis. Most schools do rubber stamp them year after year for their players, but it is not required. Some bigger schools over recruit and then don't automatically renew. Valvano was notorious in doing that at NC State back in the day. if players get hurt some schools will drop them others with integrity still allow them the free education. I know someone that was on a full ride at Northwestern, had a career ending injury, but they honored their commitment to him and let him finish his education.

You can also split scholarships, that's common in low revenue sports like Wrestling. They may only get 5 full scholarships and they will spread that out by giving 1/2 to 2 different athletes for instance. I think Volleyball and track are probably also in that category

I wasn't aware about that with regards to the renewals. With that said, it'd be pretty ****** for Burno to just not renew Beane's (or anyone's) scholarship and would make him out ot be quite the hypocrite. So, I'm not expecting him to take advantage of that priviledge.

As for partial scholarship, I'm certain partials aren't allowed in football and men's and women's basketball (D-I). I'm aware of how they get divvied up in the other sports but those three can't do it and have to give out full scholarships.

I have to say, if I'm wrong (and I'm certain I'm not) I'll admit fully that I didn't know what I was talking about regarding football and basketball scholarships, but I'm pretty damn certain those can't be given as partials.

I believe so.

The tuition for each enrolled student needs to make its way into the General Fund somehow. I mean, it’s a big Shell Game but funds appropriated to Athletics for tuition scholarships need to be transferred to the General Fund and allocated towards cost of tuition. If ‘X’ amount of scholarships are budgeted (at a cost of ‘Y’ per scholarship, where ‘Y’ is say 1.4 in-state tuition, for example, to account for a certain percentage of out-of-state student-athletes) and Athletics doesn’t use all of them or gets a few on a “discount” then the balance remains in the Athletics budget. There would likely have to be some sort of exemption waiver in order to use the funds for something other than what they were appropriated but it’s a savings on paper at least. I may be wrong, but I believe this is how it works.

Again, not that it matters.

I think you are correct. I believe the category is revenue v. non-revenue sports and each has different scholarship rules.

Well, the only thing that changes right now is the guards. But, if I had to cobble together a starting 5 from what we have, this is what I'd predict:

G - Trendan Hankerson
G - Keshawn Williams
G - Tyler Cochran
F - Zool Kueth
F/C - Adong Makuoi/Kingsley Okanu

Just based on last season, I'd start Okanu over Makuoi but it sounded like Makuoi had some injury issues. Either way, I liked how Okanu played much more and I'll take his Tyler Cochran-like motor on the starting 5 over the alternative but I can also see the advantage of bringing a guy like him in off the bench. Problem is, Makuoi provided 100% nothing last year and that's hard to give any kind of minutes to, let alone put into the starting lineup....but the options were pretty thin last year.

Regarding Beane, he lost his starting job last year and, with it, he seemed to also lose a lot of confidence. Beane has always been a guy who was very much like Eugene German but about half as good. That's not a knock on him but I think his skill set maybe just makes people think he's better (or should be better) than he actually is. I like him a lot but if I had to choose between any of the 3 guards listed or Darius Beane, I'm going to go with the listed above first.

One big problem we have right now is Makuoi and Okanu are the ONLY bigs on the roster. I suppose Crump can wander into the paint as he's 6'8" and, to his credit, he actually rebounded pretty well last year...all things considered. But he's absolutely not a post/inside player (he's also not any good). On his best days, he's a SF but he really doesn't have "best days".

So, I'm more than expecting Coach Burno to add some size in the upcoming weeks. Whether or not that acquisition is better than the Makuoi/Okanu combo (it's hard not to be) is up for question. But even if it's not, they need, at minimum, one more post player.

Although, while I really didn't expect Burno to go the D-1 transfer route much, I also never expected him to get one that was just a freshman (sophomore next season...and I'm assuming the NCAA will give everyone waivers again). At this point, a grad transfer, or a guy with just 1 year of eligibility, wouldn't be the worst thing for depth but if he has another card up his sleeve like Williams but in the form of a dude who's like 6'9 or 6'10...well, that would really be something.

Here's your something, "Arizona State transfer Chris Osten is following @CoachBurno11"
to NIU next year.

6'9" big man who will have 2 years of eligibility at @GoHuskiesMBB
