RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
MAC Transfer Update:

Mason McMurray - Transferring from Ohio - Undecided on transfer destination - RS Sophomore - 6’7” - PF - 2* recruit from Stow-Monroe Falls HS (Stow, OH) - McMurray played 3 seasons at Ohio. As a redshirt sophomore, McMurray played in 19 games (0 starts) averaging 4.6 minutes and 0.9 ppg/1.1 rpg shooting 41.7% from the field (42.9% 3PT - 3 of 7) and 55.6% FT (5 of 9). McMurry has become an afterthought on the Ohio bench. In his 2nd year, it looked like there might be something to build on but regressed much this past season. Coming out of HS, McMurray received additional offers from Tiffin University (D-II), Notre Dame College (D-II), Fairmont State (D-II), and High Point.

Down the Road Recruiting:

NIU Recruiting Update (2022):

Takei Emerson-Hardy - HS JUNIOR (2022) - 6’7” - PF - 2* recruit from Vanden HS (Fairfield, CA) - Emerson-Hardy is a junior this year and is a physically impressive one. He’s long and tall but athletically built with broad shoulders. I ran across a few pics of him in a football uniform and I’d almost bet he’s a receiver...and a good one at that. With that said, there were a few videos I could find but some or most of them were from his sophomore season (at least I think it was based on the upload date). I did find one (maybe two) from his junior season. Let’s just say the kid can dunk. He does it a lot. One of the videos was titled “A Walking Highlight” and he can definitely impress. I’ve seen him listed as a PF but also a SF and as a F/G. I think guard is a stretch for him. Although, there’s little video I could find of him doing anything other than 1) dunking or a distant 2) blocking a shot. I did see a few outside shots which looked fine with nothing standing out to me as a concern from a mechanics angle. At 6’7”, I’d like to see him bulk up to play the 4, and I think he can as he has the frame to do it. I think he’s done growing because every video is basically the same body. But I could almost see him working pretty well as a 3 because he runs the floor well and might be able to develop enough of an outside game to be a minor concern for defenses. He looks pretty good on defense. Seems like a calm kid on the floor. Quite confident but not showy. Just confident.

Currently, Emerson-Hardy has received additional offers from Washington State (which came in tonight along with NIU), Montana State, Montana, Cal Poly, Cleveland State, Sacramento State, and Northern Arizona.

I am happy that his first recruit s a point guard. I hope he becomes a 4 year starter at the position.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
MAC Transfer Update:

Marreon Jackson - Transferring from Toledo - Undecided on transfer destination - Senior - 6’1” - PG - 2* recruit from Garfield Heights HS (Cleveland) - Jackson has played 4 seasons at Toledo. As a senior, Jackson played and started 30 games averaging 34.2 minutes and 18.1 ppg/6.1 rpg/5.9 apg/1.8 spg shooting 40.3% from the field (34.8% 3PT - 86 of 247) and 90.4% FT (103 of 114). Gran transfer, extra year of eligibility or whatever it is, this is still a huge loss for Toledo and it's looking very much like next year’s Toledo team will be dramatically different from the past couple of seasons. Coming out of HS, Jackson received additional offers from Buffalo, Robert Morris, and Cleveland State.

Zach Gunn - Transferring from Ball State - Undecided on transfer destination - RS Junior - 6’6” - PF - 3* recruit from Hamilton Southeastern HS (Fishers, IN) - Gunn played 3 seasons at Ball State. In his RS Junior season, Gunn played in 17 games (3 starts) averaging 10.4 minutes and 3.4 ppg/2.2 rpg shooting 43.5% from the field (40% 3PT - 14 of 35) and 80% FT (4 of 5). After Gunn’s sophomore season, it appeared he was on his way to being a pretty productive player for Ball State but an injury which derailed his 3rd season seems to have also set him back from a production standpoint. Coming out of HS, Gunn received additional offers from Butler, Saint Louis, Indiana State, Indiana, and IUPUI.

Tre Edwards - Transferring from Akron - Undecided on transfer destination - RS Freshman - 6’6” - SG - 2* recruit from Link Year Prep School (Branson, MO - born in Hamilton, ON where he attended Hamilton Heights Christian Academy) - Edwards played one season at Akron where he played in 5 games averaging 0.8 minutes and 1.2 ppg. Coming out of HS, Edwards received additional offers from Arkansas State, New Mexico, FAU, Weber State and Buffalo.

Rifen Miguel - Transferring from Ohio - Undecided on transfer destination - Junior - 6’9” - PF - 2* recruit from West Oaks Academy (Orlando - born in Luanda, Angola) - Miguel started his collegiate playing career at the College of Central Florida (Ocala, FL). Miguel then transferred to Tallahassee CC before transferring to Ohio where he will once again transfer. This year, Miguel played in 13 games (0 starts) averaging 7.3 minutes and 2.9 ppg/1.6 rpg shooting 34.3% from the field (25% 3PT - 3 of 12) and 73.3% FT (11 of 15). Coming out of HS, Miguel received offers from James Madison and Chattanooga and coming out of JUCO, he received additional offers from Western Kentucky, Troy, Grambling, Jacksonville State, Hampton, Southern, Milwaukee, Radford, Eastern Illinois, SIUe, Missouri State, Louisiana-Monroe, and Massachusetts.

Mattia Acunzo - Transferring to Robert Morris from Toledo - RS Freshman - 6’8” - PF - 2* recruit from Kennedy Catholic HS (Kennedy, PA - born in Sardinia, Italy) - Acunzo spent two seasons at Toledo (he red-shirted his first season). As a RS F, Acunzo played in 30 games (0 starts) averaging 15 minutes and 5.9 ppg/3.5 rpg/0.9 apg shooting 52.9% from the field (40.5% 3PT - 15 of 37) and 75.5% FT (37 of 49). Something is up at Toledo. As pointed out by NorthCoast, Toledo is hemorrhaging post players right now. And losing a guy like Acunzo has to hurt as he still has 3 years of eligibility and played in 30 games and logged meaningful minutes this year. It’ll be interesting how this will all play out or if this is a huge sign that players are really taking advantage of the lax transfer rules this year. Only time will tell. Coming out of HS, Acunzo received additional offers from Bucknell, Old Dominion, South Florida, Richmond, USC Upstate, Appalachian State, Wright State, American, Lipscomb, UC Riverside, UNC Greensboro, Western Carolina, Elon, James Madison, Canisius, Stony Brook, and Youngstown State.

Jermaine Marshall - Transferring to Samford from Akron - Sophomore - 6’6” - PF - 2* recruit from DME Sports Academy - Attended Hueytown HS (Birmingham, AL) - Marshall started his collegiate career at Florida SouthWestern State College (Ft. Myers - JUCO) before transferring to Akron. At Akron, Marshall played one season playing 17 games (1 start) and averaging 7.7 minutes and 2.5 ppg/2.8 rpg while shooting 37.9% from the field (22.2% 3PT - 4 of 18) and 81% FT (17 of 21). Coming out of HS/JUCO, Marshall received additional offers from Wingate, North Alabama, Drake, FGCU, Kent State, UAB, Fresno State, Southern Miss, Sam Houston State, James Madison, and Fordham.

Jonathan Komagum - Transferring to Sacramento State from Toledo - Junior - 6’9” - C - 2* recruit from TaylorMade Academy of Crescent City Christian School (Metairie, LA - born in London) - Komagum started his collegiate career at Williston State College (JUCO - Williston, ND) where he played for 2 seasons before transferring to Toledo this past year. In his one season at Toledo, Komagum played in 26 games (8 starts) averaging 9.1 minutes and 0.8 ppg/2.4 rpg shooting 35.3% from the field (0 for 1 from behind the arc) and 58.8% FT (10 of 17). In essence, Komagum was a tall dude and that’s about it. Coming out of HS, Komagum received an offer from Maine and coming out of JUCO, he received additional offers from Detroit Mercy and St. Bonaventure.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
NIU Recruiting/Transfer Update:

Keshawn Williams - Transferring to NIU from Tulsa - Freshman - 6’3” - PG - 3/2* recruit from Bloom Township HS (Chicago Heights, IL) - Williams played one season at Tulsa where he played in 19 games (1 start) averaging 10.5 minutes and 3.1 ppg/0.9 rpg/1.3 apg/0.5 spg shooting 28.1% from the field (23.1% 3PT - 3 of 13) and 92.3% FT (24 of 26). Coming out of HS, Williams received additional offers from Colorado State, Colorado, Loyola, West Virginia, Kansas State, Murray State, UIC, Hampton, SIU, Saint Louis, Milwaukee, Cleveland State, Missouri State, FAU, DePaul, George Mason, and UAB. Interesting get here. Tulsa was a pretty good program and Williams played a decent amount as a true freshman. He was also recruited pretty strongly from more than a few really good programs. Right off the bat, Coach Burno lands one of the highest regarded Chicago area recruits in years (decades even) and while NIU is the only program to make an offer to Williams this year, since entering the transfer portal it's being reported Williams was approached and targeted by several mid-major programs. While he didn’t score much at Tulsa, Williams was an explosive scorer at Bloom and is able to go to the rim to score. Very interesting acquisition and between Williams and Kon, these are two really exciting players and...I’m really curious here...but I wonder if either Hankerson or Beane are going to be sticking around. It seems like Burno just replaced them. Granted, Kon is an incoming freshman and Williams is a sophomore, but if he’s punting on this upcoming year, we could see both of the incumbents' playing time cut a lot.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
Btw, I was out of town and pretty much away from internet for about 3 days so....let's just say A LOT has happened in the conference and...more importantly...with NIU!

I'm already loving the two acquisitions made by Coach Burno. To get a highly touted area recruit who still has 3 years of eligibility is fantastic. And his first recruit appears to be a home run as well.

Granted, both of these guys could flop but I can't remember two (let alone one) recruit I've been this excited about in a long time and to have them be his first two recruits is even more exciting.

I can't wait to see what the next few weeks looks like.

Burno is showing that he can attract talent in a short period of time. If he can also coach it, then we may have a home run.

I am curious - Anyone here care to predict a starting 5 based on our newest haul...I mean Williams is locked in as a starter I have no doubt.

A Home Run? After the last decade or so of futility, I’d be happy with a bloop single..

Well, the only thing that changes right now is the guards. But, if I had to cobble together a starting 5 from what we have, this is what I'd predict:

G - Trendan Hankerson
G - Keshawn Williams
G - Tyler Cochran
F - Zool Kueth
F/C - Adong Makuoi/Kingsley Okanu

Just based on last season, I'd start Okanu over Makuoi but it sounded like Makuoi had some injury issues. Either way, I liked how Okanu played much more and I'll take his Tyler Cochran-like motor on the starting 5 over the alternative but I can also see the advantage of bringing a guy like him in off the bench. Problem is, Makuoi provided 100% nothing last year and that's hard to give any kind of minutes to, let alone put into the starting lineup....but the options were pretty thin last year.

Regarding Beane, he lost his starting job last year and, with it, he seemed to also lose a lot of confidence. Beane has always been a guy who was very much like Eugene German but about half as good. That's not a knock on him but I think his skill set maybe just makes people think he's better (or should be better) than he actually is. I like him a lot but if I had to choose between any of the 3 guards listed or Darius Beane, I'm going to go with the listed above first.

One big problem we have right now is Makuoi and Okanu are the ONLY bigs on the roster. I suppose Crump can wander into the paint as he's 6'8" and, to his credit, he actually rebounded pretty well last year...all things considered. But he's absolutely not a post/inside player (he's also not any good). On his best days, he's a SF but he really doesn't have "best days".

So, I'm more than expecting Coach Burno to add some size in the upcoming weeks. Whether or not that acquisition is better than the Makuoi/Okanu combo (it's hard not to be) is up for question. But even if it's not, they need, at minimum, one more post player.

Although, while I really didn't expect Burno to go the D-1 transfer route much, I also never expected him to get one that was just a freshman (sophomore next season...and I'm assuming the NCAA will give everyone waivers again). At this point, a grad transfer, or a guy with just 1 year of eligibility, wouldn't be the worst thing for depth but if he has another card up his sleeve like Williams but in the form of a dude who's like 6'9 or 6'10...well, that would really be something.

Imo, Montgomery was the definition of a bloop single. He had two good seasons and maybe one more that was okay. On the other hand, Ricardo Patton was an absolute strike out.

Unfortunately, he wasn't a strike out with the bases loaded as, when he took over, there was absolutely no one on base. He just made the situation worse.

He was like a foul bunt strike out with 2 outs and no one one in the bottom of the 9th inning while trailing by 8 runs.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
MAC Transfer Destination Update:

Ishmael El-Amin - Transferring to Rhode Island from Ball State - Senior - 6’1” - PG - 3* recruit from Hopkins HS (Minneapolis, MN) - El-Amin played 4 seasons a Ball State and was a regular all 4 seasons becoming a starter his junior season. As a senior, El-Amin started all 23 games averaging 33.5 minutes and 16.2 ppg/3 rpg/2.9 apg/1.3 spg shooting 40.1% from the field (31.7% 3PT - 53 of 167) and 88.1% FT (59 of 67). Simply put, Ball State is losing their leader. Now, to be fair, I believe he has graduated and is transferring as a grad student even though he could have chosen to return to Ball Stat for one more season. But, he’s leaving and I’m really interested in where he’s going to land. He’s a heck of a player. Coming out of HS, El-Amin received additional offers from DePaul, Texas Tech, Nevada, Green Bay, Tennessee Tech, and Denver.

MAC Transfer Update:

Nolan Foster - Transferring from Ohio - Undecided on transfer destination - Sophomore - 6’10” - C - 2* recruit from Mattawan HS (Mattawan, MI) - Foster has played 2 seasons at Ohio. As a sophomore, Foster played in 6 games averaging 4.5 minutes and 0.3 ppg/0.5 rpg shooting 50% from the field (1 of 2) and 0% FT (0 for 1). After playing in 29 games last season, Foster saw his playing time disappear. I honestly have no understanding of why, nor do I have a desire to find out. Coming out of HS, Foster received additional offers from Toledo, Central Michigan, and James Madison.

Savion Gallion - Transferring from Buffalo - Undecided on transfer destination - Sophomore - 6’5” - SG - 2* recruit from Mt. Zion Prep School (Lanham, MD - born in Washington, D.C. - previously attended Thurgood Marshall HS in D.C.) - Gallion played 2 seasons a Buffalo. As a sophomore, Gallion played in 12 games (0 starts) averaging 0.6 minutes and 1.5 ppg/0.6 rpg/0.4 apg shooting 29.2% from the field (13.3% 3PT - 2 of 15) and 50% FT (2 of 4). Coming out of HS, Gallion received offers from Delaware State and James Madison and coming out of prep school, he received additional offers from Youngstown State and Illinois State.

NIU Transfer Update:

And...the one that sucks...

Tyler Cochran - Transferring from NIU - Undecided on transfer destination - Sophomore - 6’2” - SG - 2* recruit from Bolingbrook HS (Bolingbrook, IL) - Well, this one stings. More power to ya Tyler. But I’m sad to see you leave. I was really looking forward to seeing how he’d develop under Coach Burno. Anyway...Cochran played 2 seasons at NIU and as a sophomore, Cochran had a breakout season playing in 12 games (11 starts) averaging 32.3 minutes and 15.5 ppg/7.3 rpg/2 apg/1.7 apg shooting 45.3% from the field (22.2% 3PT - 4 of 18) and 62.2% FT (28 of 45). Coming out of HS, Cochran received additional offers from UIC, Tennessee State, Western Michigan and Toledo. Honestly, this is probably going to be one of those “the grass is always greener/grab the opportunity when you get it/never criticize a guy for making a decision that he feels is best for him” type of situation. I hope he doesn’t regret this because he could have been a big part of the turnaround at NIU and still had 2 years of eligibility left. Oh well...c'est la vie Tyler.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
Alright...since the question was posed earlier and I included Cochran in my starting 5...I guess I have to make an adjustment since that comment didn't age well AT ALL.

So, I just have to put in Beane.

G - Trendon Hankerson
G - Keshawn Williams
G - Darius Beane
F - Zool Kueth
F/C - Adong Makuoi/Kingsley Okanu

I'm really not looking forward to the day when I am forced to put Crump in to the starting lineup...

Needless to say, with two guys already committed (an incoming freshman and sophomore) and 5 more spots to fill, this is going to become Coach Burno's team a lot faster than it initially appeared. As it stands, NIU will be returning 7 players (8 if you count Kamron Battle). So, if we're going with an 8 count, 3 of those players are walk-ons (Battle, Hankerson, Beane).

The roster is getting real thin. On one hand, that's exciting. On the other..it's also frightening. Granted, I highly doubt Crump, Makuoi, or Okanu are going anywhere. Kueth is probably not being courted by anyone either.

Hankerson and Beane can do whatever they want as walk-ons and with the coaching staff still up in the air, I'd say Beane is about 50/50 in whether or not he stays. Hankerson will probably just stick around to finish his degree.

Actually, maybe Hankerson and/or Beane get scholarships at this point. I could see one of them getting one at the very least. I mean, I'd probably rather have Hankerson on the team than some transfer and, considering we're still NIU, I can't assume I'll be as excited about all of the recruits this year like I was Kon.

Anyway...like I keep saying, things are going to be interesting for the next couple of weeks.
