Same goes for info on assistant coaches.

GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No word on assistant coaches. The website still has Chapman as the interim HC...

As for the roster up to this point:

Guards:
Kaleb Thornton (J)
Keshawn Williams (So)
Noah Kon (F)
Zion Russell (F)
Trendon Hankerson (Sr)
Darweshi Hunter (J)
Anthony Crump (J or Sr...I'm not sure)
Kamron Battle (So)

Small Forwards:
Zool Kueth (Sr)
Montavius Myrick (F)

Post:
Adong Makuoi (Sr)
Kingsley Okanu (Sr)
Chris Osten (Sr)
Matrice Mitchell (So)

If my math is correct, they still have one scholarship to fill because Hankerson and Battle are walk-ons.

BR, I was checking out Verbal Commits and they had Chris Johnson listed as a senior. Who is Chris Johnson and is he still on the team? Thanks.

Verbal commits just hasn't adjusted their table yet. He was a JUCO transfer two years ago and played a decent amount in German's last season. He's more of a defensive/high motor guy who can't shoot but plays his ass off.

He didn't play at all this year so he maybe has a medical redshirt and, I'm assuming, also has an additional year of eligibility as everyone else does as well.

I haven't heard anything about him basically since the YouTube video where Monty introduced the team to the fans. I'm pretty certain that's the last time he was seen.

Anyway, the "seniors" on the team for this upcoming season are all currently listed as juniors on VC.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
MAC Transfer Update:

Joe Reece - Transferring from Old Dominion to Bowling Green - Junior - 6’8” - PF - 2* recruit from East St. Louis Senior HS (East St. Louis - born in St. Louis) - Being from southern Illinois, I remember hearing a lot about Joe Reece as a senior as ESL. That little factoid isn’t all that relevant to this story but I thought I’d share it anyway...anyway… Reece started his career and spent 3 seasons at Old Dominion where he became a starter about halfway through his sophomore campaign. In his junior year with the Monarchs, Reece played in 22 games (all starts) averaging 25.5 minutes and 7.8 ppg/5.1 rpg shooting 46.5% from the field (25.6% 3PT - 10 of 39) and 53.8% FT (28 of 52). Reece is a good inside presence as he’s big and strong and can log a lot of minutes and give decent production in the paint, both offensively and defensively as long as he isn’t challenged to a free throw shooting competition. Coming out of HS, Reece received additional offers from Saint Louis, Kansas State, Duquesne, Missouri State, Murray State, and Tennessee-Martin.

Yeah, the TL:DR on this is they are using all 13 schollies, Hankerson remains a walk-on, & Johnson is a "super senior" that doesn't count against the total due to the COVID exception.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
While the super senior scholarship does not count against the scholarship limit I find it hard to believe that NIU is going to pay for a scholarship for a super senior in basketball. Of course they could use all the money they saved by not paying for assistants for Bruno for the last 10 weeks to cover the cost. More likely they allocated that money to football.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
MAC Transfer Update (This one is not the regular, run-of-the-mill transfer...):

Malik Zachery - Transferring from Buffalo - Undecided on transfer destination - RS Sophomore - 6’2” - PG - 3* recruit from Springfield Commonwealth Academy (Springfield, MA - born in Syracuse, NY) - Kind of late to put yourself in the portal but...I’m sure he knows what is best for him. Zachary played two seasons at Chipola College (JUCO - Marianna, FL) before transferring to Buffalo. At Chipola, Zachary was pretty good. He was a starter and a steady contributor. At Buffalo though, he never stepped onto the court. He apparently had some legal issues at Buffalo when he stabbed a player (yes….STABBED a player) during a fight in a pickup game with Canisius. Anyway, in a move to move on with his academics and basketball career at Buffalo, Zachery withdrew his not guilty plea and agreed to lesser charges and then was promptly suspended indefinitely from the Buffalo basketball team because...well...because...OF COURSE! Coming out of HS, Zachery received an offer from Sienna. Coming out of JUCO, he received additional offers from Ole Miss, California, Canisius (oh, the irony!), Massachusetts, Stony Brook, Coastal Carolina, Southern Miss, Middle Tennessee, Southeast Louisiana, McNeese State, Nebraska, Eastern Michigan, Sam Houston State, Fresno State, SIU, and UCF.

Reminds me of the Marques Johnson(Raymond) scene in White Men Can't Jump.

The Marques Johnson scene was based on a real incident involving late NBA player Reggie Harding. He once put on a disguise and tried to hold up a store in his hometown of Detroit. When the clerk recognized and scolded him, Harding said: "Hey, it ain't me, man."

I must admit that Marques was great in that liquor store scene. I don't know if he was taking acting classes at that time, but he nailed that scene.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
MAC Transfer Update:

Jermaine Jackson, Jr. - Transferring from LIU toCentral Michigan - RS Junior - 5’10” - PG - 3* recruit from Dakota High School (Macomb County, MI - born in Shelby Township, MI) - Jackson started his collegiate basketball career at Detroit Mercy where he played 1 season for the Titans. From there, he transferred to LIU where he spent 2 seasons. As a RS Junior for the Sharks, Jackson played in and started 15 games averaging 33.3 minutes and 15 ppg/2.6 rpg/3.5 apg shooting 36.7% from the field (34% 3PT - 36 of 106) and 86.4% FT (51 of 59). I’m gonna have to say this is a nice pickup for the Chips. While miniature, Jackson has logged a lot of minutes. At Detroit Mercy as a true freshman, he was primarily a starter. For whatever reason (I’m not fully invested in looking into it) he was basically a part-time starter at LIU his 1st year there but became a full time starter with huge minute totals and really good production in his 2nd season. So, yeah...good pickup Coach Barbee. As a high schooler, Jackson was getting a lot of attention and offers as an underclassman. Schools like SMU, Northwestern, DePaul, Georgia Tech, and Auburn were very interested. But, much like a recruit we just landed, when you don’t grow, those offers start to dry up. But we see here where a guy like this can be a serious contributor at the mid-major level. Coming out of HS, Jackson received additional offers from Colorado (a little earlier than the other three listed here), Oakland, Toledo and Duquesne.

Theater arts major at UCLA, so it wasn't a foreign concept to him. He also does the Bucks games on TV up here and does them quite well.

How about that, using his degree for a post -NBA career. Good for him. I'm sure his games are fun to listen to.

RE: 2021-22 Hoops Transfers and Recruiting
MAC Transfer Update:

Kawanise Wilkins - Transferring from Western Michigan to Tarleton State - RS Junior - 6’5” - SF - 2* recruit from Farragut Academy (Chicago, IL) - Wilkins has played 3 seasons at Western Michigan and as a junior, Wilkins played in 10 games (0 starts) averaging 11.5 minutes and 2.9 ppg/2.2 rpg shooting 34.3% from the field (28.6% 3PT - 2 of 7) and 60% FT (3 of 5). Coming out of HS, Wilkins received additional offers from Kent State, Albany, Bradley, Indiana State, Winthrop, Milwaukee, UIC, Hofstra, Loyola, and Northern Arizona.

William Boyer-Richard - Transferring from Western Michigan to Brock University (St. Catherines, ON) - Junior - 6’1” - PG - 2* recruit from Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf (Montreal, QC) - Boyer-Richard played 3 seasons at WMU. As a junior, Boyer-Richard played 19 games (9 starts) averaging 13.9 minutes and 2 ppg/1.2 rpg/1.1 apg shooting 25% from the field (21.2% 3PT - 5 of 15) and 70% FT (7 of 10). Coming out of HS, Boyer-Richard received an additional offer from Binghamton.

Deschon Winston - Transferring from Central Michigan to De La Salle University (Manilla, Philippines) - Grad Transfer - 6’4” - PG - 3* recruit from Birmingham Community Charter School (Los Angeles) - Winston started his collegiate career at the City College of San Francisco before transferring to California for a season where he played in 25 games with 2 starts. He then transferred to Central Michigan and had to sit his junior season. As a RS Junior (2019-20), Winston played in 32 games (7 starts) averaging 21.6 minutes and 5.9 ppg and 2.2 rpg/2.3 apg shooting 34.9% from the field (29.1% 3PT - 16 of 55) and 67.9% from the line (38 of 56). He did not play this current season and is now attempting to transfer, presumably, as a grad transfer. Coming out of HS/JUCO, Winston received additional offers from Arizona State and IUPUI.

Zaire Mateen - Transferring from NIU to UT Tyler (D-II - Tyler, TX) - Grad Transfer - 6’0” - PG - 2* recruit from Dunwoody HS (Georgia) born in Queens, NY - Mateen started his collegiate career at Laramie County CC (Cheyane, WY) before transferring as a sophomore to NIU where he played 3 season. His only notable season was his junior season when he played in 27 games (1 start) averaging 11.3 minutes and 4.4 ppg/1.4 rpg shooting 39.5% from the field (35.6% 3PT - 7 of 19….about 6 of those came in one game…) and 75% from the line (3 of 4). Coming out of HS/JUCO, Mateen received no other offers.

Mason McMurray - Transferring from Ohio to USC Aiken (D-II - Aiken, SC) - RS Sophomore - 6’7” - PF - 2* recruit from Stow-Monroe Falls HS (Stow, OH) - McMurray played 3 seasons at Ohio. As a redshirt sophomore, McMurray played in 19 games (0 starts) averaging 4.6 minutes and 0.9 ppg/1.1 rpg shooting 41.7% from the field (42.9% 3PT - 3 of 7) and 55.6% FT (5 of 9). McMurry has become an afterthought on the Ohio bench. In his 2nd year, it looked like there might be something to build on but regressed much this past season. Coming out of HS, McMurray received additional offers from Tiffin University (D-II), Notre Dame College (D-II), Fairmont State (D-II), and High Point.

MAC Transfer Update:

Chris Baldwin - Transferring from Texas Southern to Central Michigan - RS Senior - 6’9” - PF - 3* recruit from Notre Dame Prep School (Fitchburg, MA - born in Springfield, MA) - Baldwin started his career at Massachusetts where he spent 2 years as a Minuteman before transferring to Texas Southern where he played for 2 more seasons. In his last season as a Tiger, Baldwin played in 17 games (0 starts) averaging 7.9 minutes and 3.1 ppg/2.4 rpg shooting 37% from the field (7.7% 3PT - 1 of 13) and 65.4% FT (17 of 26). Baldwin has experience and he’s a big guy but he’s just never been a core player. In 4 seasons split between UMass and Texas Southern, he’s started a total of 11 games. So, he should provide experience and bench presence to the Chips next season. Coming out of HS, Baldwin received additional offers from La Salle, Temple and West Virginia.

NIU Transfer Update:

Per Facebook:

Quote:"After getting accepted for my MBA, I’m proud to say I am committed to St Leo University."

Hat Tip to uiniu57

Nathan Scott - Transferring from NIU to Saint Leo (D-II - Saint Leo, FL) - Senior - 6’8” - PF - 2* recruit from Neuqua Valley HS (Naperville, IL) - Scott started his collegiate career at Olney Central College (JUCO - Olney, IL) and then transferred to NIU for two seasons. Scott has his best season this past year playing in 14 games (10 starts) averaging 17.6 minutes and 5.4 ppg/3.9 rpg shooting 38.4% from the field (31% 3PT - 9 of 29) and 55.6% FT (10 of 18). Coming out of JUCO, Scott received additional offers from Kentucky State, Lewis University, and Canisius (it’s probably obvious why he chose NIU). I think Scott may have had an uphill climb at NIU as many saw him and his player profile and were reminded of a right-handed version of Levi Bradley and that was simply an unfair expectation to have for Scott. Scott was….okay but not the kind of guy you would want as a starter. He was an outside shooter who didn’t make enough shots and, much like the rest of the team, he rarely got to the free throw line but, when he did, would also rarely make them.

MAC Transfer Update:

Zach Gunn - Transferring from Ball State to IUPUI - RS Junior - 6’6” - PF - 3* recruit from Hamilton Southeastern HS (Fishers, IN) - Gunn played 3 seasons at Ball State. In his RS Junior season, Gunn played in 17 games (3 starts) averaging 10.4 minutes and 3.4 ppg/2.2 rpg shooting 43.5% from the field (40% 3PT - 14 of 35) and 80% FT (4 of 5). After Gunn’s sophomore season, it appeared he was on his way to being a pretty productive player for Ball State but an injury which derailed his 3rd season seems to have also set him back from a production standpoint. Coming out of HS, Gunn received additional offers from Butler, Saint Louis, Indiana State, Indiana, and IUPUI.

MAC Transfer Update:

Jacob Washington - Transferring from Bowling Green to Humbolt State (D-II - Arcata, CA) - RS Junior - 6’8” - PF - 2* recruit from George Washington Prep HS (Los Angeles) - Washington started his collegiate playing career at Los Angeles Harbor College and then transferred to Cerritos College (Norwalk, CA) (both community colleges) before transferring to Bowling Green for a season and it looks like he off to the university to discuss yet another transfer….(The ‘Burbs fans might catch that movie quote). As a junior at BGSU, Washington played in 25 games (2 starts) averaging 10.1 minutes and 3 ppg/2.4 rpg shooting 47.6% from the field and 71.4% FT (15 of 21). I assume he’s leaving because of playing time. I didn’t watch many (if any at all) of Bowling Green’s games so I’m not sure why they didn’t have much use for a dude his size who seemed to contribute when he was in the game. But I’m sure it’s something that can’t be gleaned from his stat line. Anyway, coming out of HS or JUCO (either one), Washington received no other offers inquiring about his services so it doesn’t appear this guy is all that in demand. I’d suspect a move to the lower levels of college basketball where he can use his 6’8” physique to its fullest extent.

NIU Recruitting Update:

2022 Recruit (HS Junior):

Duke Brennan - UNCOMMITTED - HS Junior (2022) - 6’10” - C - 2* recruit from Hillcrest Prep (Phoenix, AZ - born in Gilbert, AZ) but that's a 5* name - First, I want to point out that it appears Coach Burno has a connection within Hillcrest Prep, which is the same prep school he just recruited Chianti Clay, Jr from and is one of the top basketball factories in the country. If memory serves me correctly, Hillcrest was not one of the 6 or 8 HS teams to be included in the possible new premier HS conference with the likes of Oak Hill, La Lumiere, and IMG, but they’re considered in the 2nd wave of that calibre of schools and would probably be in the running to be part of an expansion of that league (if that league gets off the ground...which I kind of think it will). Anyway, Brennan is a big, strong dude. He is 100% a post player. I watch him and wonder where he’d fit best and he looks like the type of guy that could be a real dominant guy for a mid-major but would get overwhelmed in a major conference as he’s athletic but he doesn’t come off as special. Other than that he’s almost 7 foot tall and is built like a tight end and can move with no clumsiness or awkwardness. He’s extremely coordinated for his body and moves well into and through contact. He’s going to be one of the stronger (if not the strongest) guy on the floor and he appears to know how to use it. He appears to be able to finish in the paint (I didn’t see any outside shooting that I recall but he seems like the kind of athletic guy who might be able to have or develop that to be just enough of a pain in the ass to guard out there). Coach Burno has his work cut out for him to land this dude as currently, with one more year left of HS, Brennan has received offers from California, Wake Forest, Arizona State (duh), Nevada, Mississippi State, Hawai’i, CSU Fullerton, Georgia, UC Irvine, Eastern Washington, Montana, Massachusetts, Rice, Grand Canyon, Northern Arizona, and Air Force.
