Fire JJ - Part 56
Well here we are again getting ready to watch the NCAA tournament with no ODU. Not even close to being included. I can remember when we were disappointed if we got an invite to the NIT and had to consider whether we wanted to play in it or not. Now we would jump at an opportunity to play. I certainly am getting tired of watching Norfolk State, Hampton, Drexel, etc play and not ODU. Total blame for this decline is on JJ. He doesn't recruit the quality player needed to compete at this level. It is his team (not any other coaches), his recruits, his coaching staff and they are certainly not doing their job. I don't want to hear its a money thing. We have great facilities/location for recruiting. There are no excuses other than JJ is not getting the job done. GO ZAGS!

JJ's instate win loss record especially against VCU and W&M is embarrassing when you consider the all time win loss records for our program.

Here is something interesting. Every CUSA team that has gone to the NCAAs since 2015 has won a game in the Tournament except one. I wonder which one that was?

How many CUSA teams have gone to the NCAA in that time period?

Analyze JJ this year 15-8 6 wins against teams, with losing records in the C-USA. 1 win against a MEAC school, 2 wins against CAA teams and 1 win against D-3 VW. Also, 2 wins against a so-so FLA Atlantic team. That is 12 of our 15 season wins. Need I say any more!

RE: Fire JJ - Part 56
Not sure which is the bigger problem, JJ or CUSA. They’re both killing this program. JJ might do better in the A10, but best case scenario is we go A10 with a new coach. At this point we may as well not even play the regular season. It all comes down to the conference tournament. It’d save a lot of money.

I do think it would be interesting if ODU was in the "position" of Norfolk State, Drexel and Hampton in a 15-2, 16-1 matchup where they would be a 20+ point underdog.

They were a 12.5 point dog to Purdue two years ago, lost by 13 and I bet if they were playing Illinois this year as a 22.5 pt dog, people wouldn't be excited or hailing the season as a success especially if the result matched the spread.

Well said. 100% agree. The only thing I would add is that being in C-USA has nothing to do with this. It’s all on the coach. We regularly recruited much better players when we were in lowly CAA.

1. The old CAA was leaps and bounds a better conference than the current CUSA. There were years where we had up to 5-7 teams that were arguably better than CUSA's current champion (ODU, VCU, GMU, Drexel, Hofstra, Northeastern, UNCW). Not an apples to oranges comparison.

2. It is much easier to recruit to a regional league. It is much easier to recruit into a team that gets on TV and gets ink. It is much easier to recruit against teams like VCU and Richmond when you are peers that play 2-3 times per year and win around half the games.

Not saying JJ is or isn't the underlying problem or that CUSA is or isn't the underlying problem. I'm saying that CUSA is indeed a factor. Just not sure to what degree (main factor or subfactor).

I just went to check to see how accurate number 1 is.

Im not checking every year but I checked some years that I assume the league was strong.....and it still not even close to being an accurate statement.

People assume the CAA and ODU...in general....were way better than they actually were.

Any team seeded 12-16 is probably calling their season a success so far because it means they won their conference in a likely one bid league.

"Leaps and Bounds"? The CAA has consistently been a one bid (LOW seed) league with a very weak lower half just like C-USA (post Memphis exiting). Before '02 we had the pleasure of facing perennial doormats American, William & Mary, E. Carolina & JMU and it didn't get much better when they added powerhouses Towson, Delaware, Drexel & Hofstra. The CAA was a pillow fight league. I'll never forget a cartoon in the Richmond Times Dispatch that depicted the CAA tournament as the barn yard where the cows played with the NCAA Tournament written on the doorway to the slaughterhouse next door.

I said arguably. 7 may be hyperbole, but I don't believe North Texas would have finished in the top 5 of the CAA (the version we left) many years. VCU finished 4th in the league the year they made the Final Four. We got an at-large from there with 10 losses.
