Yeah. Now get off my lawn.

Gilesfan must be one of JJ's best supporter. I wonder how much he gives to ODAF

I give a significant amount. I would paint myself more as one of JJ best supporters bc there are plenty that really like him. But, Im not really an emotional person and I try to think through things logically. Im not gonna cry if JJ retires and we get a promising coach. I also am not going to say silly things like he cant coach.

Can't coach How many winning games, were against top competition? we need to go to a lower league, JJ is familiar with the Patriot. After weeks, Wood picked him after a terrible losing season at American. We are not in the same league of play with VCU or Maryland. That is why the schedule is so poor. JJ is so good, he stayed at American for 18 years. Nobody wanted him but Wood (friends at UVA}.

RE: Fire JJ - Part 56
If you are looking for quality wins and better competition why go to the Patriot League? ... and maybe, just maybe, someone living and working in a great city like DC, at a good university, with a wife working a good job in the same town, isn't out there stumping for a different job. We don't know if he was ever approached by other schools and said no. . . . I'm not thrilled with where the program is right now, and I wouldn't have a problem with a change. But to assume he had no choice but to stay at AU doesn't make sense to me. It's a pretty big leap from someone I bet knows next to nothing about the man.

One correction: Wood needs a new CPA, he has wasted money. You are right we can't buy out JJ, He has us in the catch bird seat.

People assume the CAA and ODU...in general....were way better than they actually were.

I said arguably. 7 may be hyperbole, but I don't believe North Texas would have finished in the top 5 of the CAA (the version we left) many years. VCU finished 4th in the league the year they made the Final Four. We got an at-large from there with 10 losses.

The year we were an at large, we were the 64th best team according to KenPom:

VCU-52
Drexel-73
George Mason-89
Hofstra- 99
Towson-151
NE-188
W&M-196
UNC-W- 225
Georgia State- 241
JMU- 292

This was pretty close to the best CAA year. FWIW, in todays committee, we don't even sniff an at large consideration at 64.

But this years CUSA:

North Texas- 74
LT- 82
Marshall- 90
WKY- 92
UAB- 97

So at possibly the very best CAA season, it was likely better due to having better top teams (VCU/ODU). Both seasons had 5 top 100 teams from each conference and the bottom end of that CAA was just as bad.

Let me scan through other years quickly....

02- CAA was terrible
03- 1 good team, conference was terrible
04: VCU- 81, GM- 96 Drexel- 99
05: 1 good team (ODU, which is ranked where North Texas is this year)
06: George Mason- 22, UNC-W- 42, Hofstra- 63, ODU-67, Drexel- 100
07: See previous post
08: VCU-68, GM-80
09: VCU-54, GM-89, ODU- 93, NE-97
10: ODU- 37, VCU-56, NE-71
11: GM-24, ODU-48, VCU-53, Drexel-93
12: Drexel- 45,VCU-46, Georgia State-84
13: Highest ranked team was 133 :)

People keep going on and on about the good ole days of the CAA......which were extremely fun. But, don't kid yourselves on it being some great level of basketball that was so much better than what we see in CUSA. CAA had a couple awesome teams (GM in 2006 and 2011), but its not like the CAA was the powerhouse people want to remember it as.

They had 2 seasons with 5 top 100 teams in the conference...which is what CUSA did this year.

This was a very incomplete year with fewer games, many OOC games cancelled, and many P5 teams cancelling quality OOC games and backfilling with garbage teams. Statistics are insignificant. I believe the entire conference had one quality win OOC. Compare that to the CAA "very best" season.

ODU had wins over Clemson (57), Xavier (22), Dayton (70), and Richmond (41) and Cleveland St (42)
GMU had wins over Harvard (35)
VCU had wins over UCLA (44) and Wichita State (60)

And I only looked up those 3

Next year will be another bust without those guys, and we will be stuck with JJ and having the same discussions next year. What is the saying about doing the same thing over and over, but expecting a different result? If those guys don’t return we will 1. Lose to VCU. 2. Not beat a tier 1 team. 3. Have poor shooters but decent defense. 3. Finish lower than 100 but higher than 200. 4. Finish in the top half of CUSA 5. Have somewhere between 18 and 22 wins. 6. Sit at home in March and watch the NCAA or NIT on TV.

So in other words, ODU will have another successful year - by current (recent) standards for the program.

Unfortunately by Wood's definition, probably so. He may be the only one left after all the fans lose interest.

Marshall- 105 (won a NCAA tourney game)
UAB- 109

And in 2018 many posters on here talked about how garbage CUSA is.

What stats don't show is the huge difference in how many teams went to the NCAA Tournament from CAA then versus CUSA today. How many reached the Final Four from the CAA then versus CUSA today. How many times ODU went to the Tourney then versus in CUSA today. How many big OOC wins ODU had then versus in CUSA today. How many wins ODU had over VCU then versus how many they have in CUSA today.

Numbers are nice to use as a tool, but they certainly don't tell the whole story.

Emotion is a different story. We were much more connected to our rival teams in the CAA so everything meant more. While the basketball and teams were really not appreciably better, fan investment was. While I hate WKY, LA TECH, UAB, and have a growing dislike for Marshall. I do not think I would go out of my way to drive from PA to Norfolk or Richmond like I used to do. It was important for me to see us play VCU twice a year, or to to go to the tournament in Richmond. I have much less incentive to make that trip for CUSA games.

Gilefan I will give ODU credit, they beat Norfolk State early and, they Norfolk St. won last night, to play the best team in the country (NCAA TOURNEY). Jones comes no where near that, if he goes to the NCAA he doesn't win (8 years), even with a easy schedule. I mention going to the Patriot league because, he spent 18 years there and maybe, every 2 or 3 years he could go to the NCAA. I don't buy that crap, that he wanted to stay at American. I feel sure, if any he had a few offers over 18 years only. What coach is satisfied to stay at that low level, unless he could not get any better offers. Wood's mistake was giving JJ an extension, mainly built on transfers in a very weak league. Now we are stick with him, until Wood gives him another extension. Fan base is dropping my friend (Gilsfan). If you are happy with this weak league and OOC schedule, then please continue to give your $300.00 for the ODAF and be a hard core fan. Over the year's I have lost a lot of my excitement and I have given a plenty to the ODAF. The next President should fire JJ and Wood. Maybe at least the league(if we change) and OCC will be more competitive.

From one irrational fan to another i agree with you on Jones. He needs to go yesterday. AD is doing the same thing he has done with FB and killing the enthusiasm. This whole Ath Dept reeks of incompetence and ineptitude. Having not seen what Rahne can bring i will leave him out of this but damn we have screwed up on some critical decisions real bad. Bobby could neither coach nor recruit i am glad that dumb **** is gone. Besides that one Conf championship and first round exit Jones hasn't done jack in his tenure. Coming to Baseball i don't even know why they are sponsored. Field Hockey went down the drain years ago. There are occasional glimpses of goodness from Tennis, Soccer and well that's it. I don't know where the blame is but fan apathy has started growing and that is not good for a G5. Just curious when you say "give plenty" if you don't mind i want to know what that number is on a yearly basis. I know most members on this board give from anywhere between 1k to 20k and mines between 1k and 2k usually, I don't think any high level donors visit this board but its one of those that can make the AD hear what they have to say. I highly doubt Wood has any interest in hearing from the folks on this board.

Well this is still true. Extend the JJ contract. He's the best.

Wood has made that mistake once, do you really want him to be stupid and do it again? Wood has inflated our budget for what? I budget is at a point, where we are stick with C-USA and JJ because of money. The big givers have ran out of money. Good for Norfolk State, they deserve all the press they got today.

All he does every year is win 20 games and put us in position to win the CUSA tournament and get to the NCAAs. He was especially impressed with the job he did this year. I like Wood personally, but if that isn't the personification of delusional, I don't know what is.

What else can Wood say? He hired and extended him!
