that's big for WMU. wright improved a lot his soph year and since they added a couple of solid transfer bigs their frontcourt should be solid.

of course this news posts the same day WMU also loses Jason Whitens, a lesser player imo, who enters the portal as a grad transfer.

RE: Transfer portal
MAC continues to get better through the portal.

WMU adds a good 6-2 shooting guard in 5th year senior Mack Smith from EIU. Holds the ncaa record for consecutive games with a 3 pointer. 37% career shooter from three.

EMU adds james Scott, much travelled but very talented 6-5 shooting guard from Portland St-Temple-Kennessaw St, who should be a big scorer in the MAC. Streaky shooter who can light it up when he's on and can also play some pg which could allow EMU to play talented frosh pg Sacicevic at the point but take a little pressure off.

Ball St starting to rebuild their roster a bit. They add in Demarious Jacobs, veteran guard from St Louis, who started there in 2019-20 and is versatile if not explosive. Has played at a high level of comp and should stabilize their backcourt along with Cocheran from NIU, although they still need to find some more scoring.

Unless there's some late surprise transfers out the MAC looks to be a bit stronger next season, especially if Preston returns to OU. Could make a case that BG, OU, Toledo and Buffalo will flirt with ncaa bids based on rosters strength and depth. Toledo's schedule is coming together and will include road games at Michigan St and Richmond along with their usual mix of solid mid majors. I'd imagine OU and BG will schedule up as they are priming for NCAA bids and BUffalo always schedules well. Not sure quite what to make of AKron at this point and Kent is still struggling to fill out their roster so we might see a bit of a shift in the power balance of the league as teams usually near the top (Kent, Akron, BSU) slip a bit and OU, Miami, Toledo, BG look to solidify themselves near the top with UB.

Don't sleep on Akron, they added a 7-footer at midseason last year, plus a backcourt transfer from South Florida, and the Walton kid from Ball State who's like in his seventh year. Add in a strong freshman class including a 6-10 freshman from Mali.

As stated, Kent is still waiting to fill out its roster after losing its top 2 scorers (Nuga/Pippen) and its top post reserve (O'Neal) from last season. However, they do have a backcourt transfer from Duquesne who is solid, but not a prolific scorer, and overall and four of five starters returning (after Nuga went down midseason).

If they can get a pair of solid transfer/juco post players over the summer Kent should at least be middle of the pack looking up.

who is the 7 footer at Akron? did he play last year? the pg transfer, chicago kid via USF, is solid but much different player than LCJ. The kid from Mali seems like a good prospect but young. I guess my thinking is that Akron is gonna have to reinvent themselves and it's not clear who it will be around. I'd compare them to toledo who also lost a standout pg but has another even more talented guard in rollins to build around and a great post defender in edu coming back from injury to solidify the defense. so, they look more like they are reloading than rebuilding.

Kent usually finds a way to be relevant and I expect Sincere Carey to be a good MAC pg. I just don't see a lot of offense or rebounding on the current roster. Maybe, Senderoff will pull together a late transfer/recruiting class. I've seen a few tweets about recent transfers who had Kent on their short list but chose another school.

Akron's 7-footer is Aziz Bandaogo (?) ... who is from NBA Africa. He signed last summer but due to Covid did not arrive to states until January. Granted, Zips will have to reinvent themselves, but that's what separates the good coaches from the average/bad and Akron's coach is recognized as a good one. With the SFla transfer at PG, and Walton at 2G, Zips backcourt scoring should be comparable to the recent past, albeit different.

Will be an experienced backcourt group and I really like Freeman inside. I'm thinking they still need someone who can bang and take up space in the paint. I'd expect groce to go quick fix and find someone like that in the portal but, then again, he's got 2 interesting tall young skinny bigs, so maybe he goes tall and long and gets those guys developing sooner than later. Groce likes to spread the floor with shooters and the roster looks to be thin in that regard, outside of trimble I don't know who you need to really guard from 3. Ali is OK but I think you let him bomb away for the most part. Walton is a mid range guy and good at that. doesn't really matter how you play him, he will rise up and get decent looks from 12-16 feet. Tribble isn't a shooter. Castenada made 1 three a game at USF. The bigs aren't stretch 4 types, at least yet.

So far no word on any outgoing xfers.

Both D.Plowden and Trey Diggs returning for the extra year. If Matiss K. comes back healthy BG might be able to play small ball with Plowden and Matiss playing the 5 position.

Joe Reece, 6'8" from ODU xfers to BG. About 8 pts, 5 rbs in 25 minutes.

The 3 xfer guards will replace JTurner and Davin Ziegler guard losses. Might be an interesting year for BG.

BG adds its 5th xfer, Gabe O'neal from Kent St. I think this happened a while ago. I have no idea how we will find these guys minutes. Still no word on xfers out.

Strange transfer for O'Neal ... seemed to be in line to start at Kent, or at the least get major minutes. His HS coach is at BG so guess he feels like the minutes are there for him???

Don't have the names in front of me, but the team loading up on transfers is Central Michigan. Considering both of their young bigs stayed after the coaching change, and two more have been added, along with some guards, this is a team to keep an eye on next season with their new coach.

Eastern is starting to make some transfer/recruiting noise as well.

Kent Seems to have made a late push with three recent transfers two from the SEC and one from the A-10: 6-7 Jr. DeVale Johnson from Rhode Island, 6-6 Sr. Andrew Garcia from Georgia (Stony Brook) and 6-9 Fr. Akeem Odusipe (sp?) from Vanderbilt.

Johnson and Garcia were rotational bench players for their respective teams last season, although Garcia was a solid dbl figure scorer when he was at Stony Brook. Odusipe looks to be a major project, but a big body just the same.

odusipe is a talented big guy. he's a little raw. so, good fit in the mac. where he can play more and figure out his game at the college level.

garcia is a 1 year grad transfer with a lot of experience who can get buckets and score efficiently. add him to johnson and you got 2 new older guys with perimeter skills who have the size to play forward in the mac.

kent looks a lot more like a complete roster and they have gotten a lot bigger over the last few weeks. now, senderhoff has to put em together into a team.

Ball St added transfer mickey pearson jr. from TCU. who will be a 3rd year player w freshman eligibility. 6-7 forward.
