Interesting to hear just how close our program is and some small insights into recruiting and likely why Bruiser was able to get some good recruits during his time. Also interesting to hear that had Fouch not gotten hurt again, we likely wouldnt have landed Damion.

All of this coverage and these stories are why we need to enjoy the ride and build off of this. The shoutout videos on twitter of our alums all over the world was wonderful too!

Fascinating stuff, great illustration of how recruiting is such a crapshoot. He said Drexel told him they were already offering a center. Wonder if that was Abif or Carroll? (Did we ever find out why Carroll made such a quick departure?) Lee had offers from the Bonnies, NU and HU when Fouch went out, opening up a spot.

I really enjoyed the podcast with DL as well. One thing that I recall about DL is that after he was offered a spot at Drexel his mentors recommended that he go to a prep school for a year to try for a shot at a higher basketball school. His mom told him, NO. You're not going to college to play basketball, you're going to college to get an education, and should go to the school that provides you with the best education. And that may have been the end of the story as to how he wound up at Drexel.

I assume the center in question was someone never signed. It sounded like the focus just shifted back to getting a guard when Fouch went down. It is not like they had another scholarship to fill.

I think injury was part of the reason Carroll left. He continued to struggle with back issues throughout his time in D2.

the cat is out of the bag that we kneel. i saw it at jmu. it was the first time i've seen it in person...which makes you realize how long it's been since we could go to indoor sports. a lot has changed in the world since then.

part of me thinks this is a click bait article. it's going to bring out the closet racists lurking in every corner of social media. then again...i don't think a basketball team from center city philadelphia will be impacted at all by what billy bob and betty sue in the rural parts of pennsylvania think. so let them talk. it's probably more likely the team was representing how a majority of drexel students feel.

i'm sorry if anybody disagrees and certainly would be open to hearing that opinion.

i like that spiker let them express themselves...and it makes me wish i had gotten to know this team even more. hopefully they hang around for next year.

I think that everyone here is 100% in agreement with you on this. I just find it interesting that I didn't know about it until the article came out, because everyone who is close to the program who I converse with sees it as a non-issue. Unfortunately, I had to spend the last hour on social media defending OUR team and OUR coach and OUR special group of players against ignorant racists on Facebook.

My reaction when I saw it was “oh look...they’re kneeling”...pride in knowing our guys have opinions they want to express...then back to listening to the anthem and the game. Not to minimize their opinions...but it really is “just” somebody expressing their opinion. Powerful opinion in my view which is why I said “just”. The reaction says everything about the people who get upset...and it would stop if they could ignore it...but they can’t help themselves.

Actually...the most powerful thing about it was the players who stood. Good for them...and for us. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Here is Part 2 of the column, which is focused on facilities, mostly about LaSalle.

https://www.inquirer.com/college-sports/...XzjxMk_x0c

Here is the Drexel blurb.
Quote:At Drexel, a renovation of the DAC was done instead of an alternative plan to turn the nearby armory into a Dragons home court. When the DAC is full, the DAC Pack letting loose, that place gets going. The problem? But the gym is as basic as it gets, and the capacity is half as big as the next smallest CAA gyms. And every DAC Pack alum I’ve ever had contact with seems steamed by the decision to turn the Armory into our national squash headquarters. There were plans to turn it into Drexel’s version of the Palestra, a cool old place, exposed beam work above, a destination spot. Plans changed.

Personally, I'm still not buying the obsession with the Armory. If you look at the inside structure of the Armory it's not significantly larger and better than the interior structure of the DAC. It was only supposed to hold about 3,500. So had we moved to the Armory, they'd be playing in front of an extra thousand empty seats each game for about 50 times more in costs. The renovated DAC is just fine as long as they accept the fact that it's not yet finished. They still have a lot of work to do on it, and still have room for expansion.

I can tell you haven't been there in a long time. Also, many of Drexel's last group of recruits were 3 star recruits. Okros and Bickerstaff were 3 star recruits and rated better than Damion Lee. Not saying that they are as good as Lee was, but I'm just focusing purely on ratings since you brought it up.

Relevant to the recruiting discussion:
Quote: If Drexel hadn’t made this year’s NCAA Tournament, it’s not hard to imagine one or two top Dragons saying maybe they’d try to get March Madness another way. During the NCAA Tournament, Damion Lee, now with the Golden State Warriors, was great about expressing his love and support for Drexel on social media. Lee left out the part that he transferred from Drexel to Louisville for his senior year.

RE: Media Thread
Last article... Jensen promotes a Big 5 Tourney concept to reduce scheduling burden.
Quote:The tournament format is clean and obvious … welcome to the Big 5, Drexel.

Really? Now it’s the City 6? No, it’s the Big 5.

“You can add Drexel and still call it the Big 5,” Giannini said. “The Big 10 has more than 10 schools. The Atlantic 10 has more than 10 schools. The Big 12 isn’t 12 schools.”

The man has a point. In a round-robin, Drexel is a no-go, because each school playing the five others just isn’t going to happen. Also, the City 6 is good for identifying purposes, but it has zero cache. Keep the Big 5.

It was argued to me years ago by old-guard Big 5 stewards that Drexel shouldn’t be added to their club since their school wasn’t even trying to play at the top level of hoops back when the Big 5 was building collective equity with great teams on the national stage. I bought that. That was all true, even 20 years ago.

Now, the answer would be … what collective equity?

“The importance has been diminished every year in the basketball community,” Giannini said. “Tell me one thing that is being done to emphasize it.”

...

What’s the down side? Letting Drexel fully in the club? Please. The Dragons played La Salle and St. Joseph’s this past season, lost to the Explorers, beat the Hawks. A 70-62 season-opening loss at Temple in 2019-20 didn’t suggest a game that should never be played again.
