I used to think the hardest thing to do at the mid-major level was to get players. ... I have now come to the conclusion the hardest thing to do is to get depth/bench.
There was not that much difference between Toledo-Ohio-Akron-Buffalo-Ball State ... and had Kent been at full strength they would have been in that group as well. But none of them (including Kent) had a quality dependable bench; perhaps a serviceable body for foul trouble but no consistently dependable points and and rebounds.
Ohio won because they were rested, got an easy draw in the opening round, and built up a head of steam. Credit to them.
But getting to the tournament healthy - (UB lost its shooter to wrist injury last week of the season, BSU's best player didn't play until the final month, BG's best player pulls hammy last game of the reg season, Kent's woes well documented) - with a bench is perhaps even more important than having the best 5-man lineup, which BTW the Bobcats arguably had/have.
Every year I learn more and more that this is a very finite game being played at the mid-major level and kudos to those who emerge at the end with some kind of reward (NCAA, NIT etc).

Agree, Cleveland. Depth/bench and keeping players. The two are somewhat related. Kent State's better teams had at least an adequate bench and sometimes a great bench. The 1998/99 team had the best bench. I really can't conceive of, in today's environment, Kent State ever having much of a bench, at least not very often.

I'll agree that was a deep bench but argue that 2000 (the NIT team that lost in the E8 of the NIT) was actually the deepest. As I remember it, Ray Warren and Al Moore struggled to find minutes while Meers and I believe Haut and one other guard I can't remember were off the bench as well ... and didn't Massey come off the bench that season, too? Whatever, I remember multiple games where the bench outscored the starters.
The good old days ...

I was there for the Villanova game. Will always remember how KSU completely outhustled the Wildcats.

Very disappointed in Toledo. They played like a last place not first place team. Games like this are why we get no respect.

Four men’s teams and 3 women’s teams have gone 1-6 in their first round games (BG men lost to Stetson this afternoon in 1st round CBI game). Unless Ohio wins a couple more games the MAC isn’t looking so good.
