George Mason joined the A10 for the 2013-14 season, the same time that JJ became ODU coach. In that time:

George Mason had one 20-win season, three seasons with at least 21 losses and, other than a CBI bid in 2016-17, no postseason (they haven't had an NCAA/NIT trip since beating Villanova and getting ethered by Ohio State in the 2011 NCAAs).

ODU had four 25-win seasons, no 20-loss seasons (the only losing season was 13-19 last year), an NCAA trip, an NIT Final Four, a CBI Final Four and, most importantly, the inaugural (and final) Vegas 16 title.

Obviously Mason is in a better conference and that informs their record to a degree, and for the past two seasons both programs have been fair-to-middling. But I think a fairly easy argument can be made that JJ is an upgrade over Paulsen. Whether that means he's the best pick for the job, or that they'd pay to break his contract, is another issue altogether.

Be interesting to see the wish list come out.

You must be delusional. There is a 0% chance they want to hire JJ. There is a 0% chance that nearly anyone wants to hire JJ.

I’d love to bring Krystkowiak back to Norfolk.

I once heard Krystkowiak tell a group of fans in the VIP room before a game how dominant Janko Mrksic was going to be in an ODU uniform. He said he would “Dominate the CAA”. I’ve never forgotten that. Haha

Same. There have been some coaches who would be great options at our level fired in this round. Prohm, Krysrowiak, Pitino, Miller. This would be the perfect time to move on from JJ.

He was the 13th highest paid coach in college basketball. I guess it depends on if he would be willing to take a massive pay cut.

I get the sentimental feelings and all, but he made two tournaments in 10 years in a P5 conference, while having a ton of resources. Unless he has another Alex Loughton up his sleeve, what would make him a good choice (in this fantasy world of replacing a coach)?

Remember half of the P6 teams go to the NCAA. Huge advantages.

To me, it seemed he was instrumental in the building of the program under BT. The recruiting was never quite the same after he left. That said, that is all observational and I could be completely off base. I thought his early years at Utah were solid too. That conference is a disaster right now, so I don't really hold failure in it as something that is necessarily reflective of a coach.

Half of the PAC 12 does not.

5 this year. Would have been 6 or 7 last year. 3 in 18 and 19. 4 in 17. 7 in 2016.

Ok, it's not half. But, it's not like Utah had to win the conference tourney to get bids.

Wasn't Krystkowiak only here for 1 year? 2 tops before he resigned due to personal reasons.

So bc the conference is a disaster, you don't hold the coach responsible? Hmmm

I didn't say he shouldn't have been fired or that another P5 should go get him, but I like him at a mid major. To further extrapolate your inference, I would think JJ would do a fine job at Mount Saint Mary's and would feel like that's probably a solid hire for them.

Never said Mason was going to hire him, said I wondered if JJ would be interested in trying to get a job closer to D.C. where his wife works. If you can't talk to me like a decent human being, don't talk to me at all.

I agree it would be an upgrade for them. I'm too lazy to compare SOS between GMU and ODU over the years, but I think we both know those 25 win seasons are against inferior competition - pretty sure you already said it yourself actually. I will be honest and say I did not realize GMU was THAT bad.

If the roles were reversed and you were a GMU fan, how excited would you be about buying out 3 years worth of JJ's contract and hiring him? Unless you are saying that maybe JJ would be willing to take a cut to go back to DC?

Different admin but they were interested in hiring him back in the day.

Does anyone know what the buyout would be?

If George Mason was looking for a short term fix to get the program "back on its feet," they could do worse.

Not that I think this is likely.

I spent 5 minutes looking for it after our CUSAT loss, but didn't find anything 02-13-banana

It’s mentioned in the pilots article on his extension after the 18 season that it was about $350k for each year left on his deal. Let’s assume the extension he got after the tourney trip in 2019 is similar. And we know he’s signed through the 23-24 season. So using those, it would be about $1.05 million to buy him out.

He ain’t going anywhere anytime soon unless he decides to retire.

I don't know if the interest would be mutual (or if there's even any interest from either party at all). I probably wouldn't be super excited about hiring JJ if I was at Mason, but Mason also hasn't exactly rolled the dice with its last two hires (Hewitt, Paulsen), so hiring him would be an on-brand move.

All a moot point; he's not showing up on any lists so far. I bet they hire Seton Hall assistant and Patriots legend Tony Skinn. Athletic supporter stock will be the next GameStop!
