Yes, if you grew up watching hoops in the mid- to late- 1970s, Ray Meyer and DePaul were frequently in the news. From that time to the mid-1980s they were a very prominent program, and for hoops fans of a certain age, like me, you always remember that prominence, it carries over to now even though they haven't been anything in decades.

But no, even then, they weren't "blue blood".

Whatever happened to Charlotte 49ers basketball, anyway? When we moved away from Charlotte, Bobby Lutz was the coach and they were winning NCAA tournament games... now that we're back in the Queen City I don't even hear about them on local radio!

49er Hoops needs to mount a comeback!!!

What UNC Charlotte, UAB and USF did in the 1970s-1980s was nothing short of impressive. Programs that evolved quickly from nothing to become competitive.
