His name got him hired and his performance got him fired.

I'll be curious to watch these high major coaching searches this year though. Two B10 jobs are now open. Maybe because it's been such a disjointed season but I really haven't heard much buzz about coaches ready to move up to $3 million + a year jobs.

Using the AAC as an example, Sampson is 65 years old and I'm sure they gave him an oil well in Houston. WSU's coach is a rookie; Brannen is 2nd year, Penny isn't leaving Memphis. After that, who would even be considered as successful?

One of the AAC programs should give Archie Miller another chance.

Dave Leitao gone from DePaul (again).

I'd be shocked if there are any coaching changes in the AAC this offseason. After next year, I could see Jank, Gregory, Dawkins, McKie, and Haith all potentially being on the hot seat.

I think Dawkins will probably be okay. But the rest of those guys for sure. None of them ever get better.

I mean, not every conference is like the AAC in that regard though...and why do coaches NEED to make that money when they move up? I bet you'll see some or all of these guys moving around, and the schools not needing to pay them $3M/year will be thrilled:

Mark Pope (BYU)
Pat Kelsey (Winthrop)
Craig Smith (Utah State)
Matt Langel (Colgate)
Darian DeVries (Drake)
Casey Alexander (Belmont)
Wes Miller (UNC-Greensboro)
Porter Moser (Loyola-Chicago)

Obviously there is certain regional dependency given recruiting connections being a bit tighter at the mid-major level, but I feel as though teams like Minnesota, or other mid-level jobs, will be landing grounds for coaches like this.

I love Indiana fans...they're delusional as hell.

As of right now, the Indy Star thinks the "most likely candidates" are...

Nate Oats
Eric Musselman
Dana Altman

Why would ANY of those dudes leave for a tire fire in south central Indiana?

For real. All 3 have been successful so far at high-resource P5 schools. They would be crazy to take that job over the situations they are in now. This ain't Kentucky or North Carolina calling.

Also, they have Nate Oats in the candidate of "solid hire." Are you kidding me? He's a pipe dream/home run hire for Indiana if he's interested, which I highly doubt. Delusional indeed.

Wow. That's next level delusion. Saw Scott Drew mentioned in a few places as well. EDIT: Saw that Drew was on the list. It's weird how cultish IU basketball and Michigan football appear to be. As fans, we're always pining for UC guys to come back and coach. But that's what makes us fans. At those schools, the boosters, media, and apparently administration place weird importance upon having program connections. I mean, they're talking Calbert Cheaney.

Boston College hires College of Charleston's Earl Grant as their next HC. Grant had one NCAAT and one NIT tournament in 7 years at the CoC.

This suggests slim pickings perhaps for high major schools this year? College of Charleston had some great teams in the past but in my mind they've been off the national radar for quite a while now.

IU has resources and institutional support very comparable to those two.

Penn State just hired Purdue's lead assistant Micah Shrewsberry...previously an assistant under Brad Stevens at both Butler and with the Celtics, he was also the lead recruiter for both of Purdue's c/o 2022 signings.

That may be so, but Indiana isn't a name that moves the needle nationally with recruits anymore. I guess my point is that I don't think it's much easier to win at Indiana than it is at Oregon, Alabama, or Arkansas. And the expectations are much higher than any of those schools. I just don't see why Oats, Musselman, or Altman would leave the situations they are in to go to Indiana.

RE: Coaching Carousel
Something else I would add is that the Big Ten is the best conference in college basketball right now, and doesn't show any signs of slowing down. So not only do you leave one of those schools to inherit a fanbase with crazy expectations who will hold you to the standard of Bobby Knight, you also have to win in the toughest conference in the land. No thank you.

It will take a special school to hire Porter Moser.

He got fired from Illinois State in 2007. He wasn't a terrible coach, but word around here is that he'd frequently announce a practice with 2 hours notice. After numerous warnings to knock it off, they finally just fired him and his whole staff.

Maybe he's changed. But he's still at Loyola 4 years after his Final Four run.

For every intelligent Athletic Director, there is another who simply grasps at straws that they know will give them a positive article in the local paper. "Former Final Four Coach with 100-35 record in last four years hired to..." has a nice ring to it, even if he's a nightmare.
