Search Committee For New AD Launched
https://tribeathletics.com/news/2021/3/1...ector.aspx
Looks like Martin won’t be the full time AD based on the quotes from Rowe in this article. He’s done a great job in my opinion amidst very difficult circumstances. I know she misses him as her Chief of Staff, but I was hoping he would get the job as AD permanently.

RE: Search Committee For New AD Launched
Yeah, I wouldn't have hated Martin getting the full time role, but it seems like he/Rowe wants him back as Chief of Staff. Search committee/special advisors seems to draw on a wide range of alumns/sports, which is nice.

Wondering if Laycock would be a consideration if interested?

Not a bad mix of current & recent athletes & coaches, as well as influential and financially well endowed alumni.

Love Laycock, but I'm never in favor of elevating former players to a coaching role that haven't paid their dues or former coaches to administrators that haven't risen through the ranks as an administrator. No doubt Laycock loves this school and knows the limitations, but I'd prefer an experienced professional that has a vision and keen understanding of the landscape of today's college sports.

My guess is that if you're on the committee or listed as an advisor you've taken yourself out of the running. Same thing applies to Al Albert.
IMO, a minority hire is the way to go, especially in light of the racial insensitivity claims made by Latrelle Smith. I'm not asking for an affirmative action hire, but surely there's a qualified AD candidate that is also a minority. I'd also be looking for someone on the young side of 50.

Search Committee For New AD Launched
I'm not one for a minority hire for the sake of a minority hire. I think I want what most of us want. I want an AD that positions us to compete at the highest level while also being realistic and mindful of the challenges that are present.
A minority option that surfaced as a possibility before was London's old boss Kerry Davis the AD at Howard.

We're in agreement here. IMO, a minority hire might be better suited to handle some of the issues in the current environment. But obviously, the fit is the most important thing.

Interesting to see who from in the department is on the committee. Multiple sources close to the department say that SWA Hawthorne and Deputy AD Burke; both Driscoll hires, have stated that they have zero interest in the opening and have no plan in pursuing that role at WM. There has been no information on where Sr. Associate Henderson stands or if WM would even be interested since he was a Huge hire.

I'd be fascinated to see what hiring criteria are being used. This is one position that I would overpay for.
I also wonder who would be interested in this job. From an outsiders view, this is a train wreck and rebuild. No money, etc. Seems like someone close to the college from before might be a safe choice, but I don't think that's what we need.

It won't be attractive to a current peer level or higher AD. It would most certainly be attractive to a lower level rising star, a higher tier associate AD, or an unemployed former AD looking for another shot. I think we will get plenty of interested parties. We just need to find the right applicant with the appropriate vision that is aware of the quirks of a school like W&M.

Seems like no one in house is interested; wonder why with this admin across campus, and Jeremy couldn't run away fast enough back to his safe place.

No one in-house is interested? Perhaps. It could just as easily be that they aren't interested in an inside hire to take over at AD. I want a serious AD search. I want the best AD that we can find and afford. I don't want to settle for the current staff's favorite or Rowe's BFF. Give me new ideas and new energy. No offense to current administrators working for the school that may bleed green & gold. Doesn't mean they are the right hire for AD. If ultimately they decide the right hire was here all long, then fantastic.
On the surface, the way they are doing it is the right way. The selection committee names compiled are multi generational, influentual, and community leaders. All care deeply for W&M and want the best for the school. If the new AD works out, or they don't work out, I trust whomever the consensus choice is to be the right hire at the time.

No disrespect though I certainly hope physical characteristics aren’t the primary consideration. I felt that may have been the driving force on the last hire. I would be happy with the best qualified we can get regardless of the exterior. We need someone with a good interior and understand the challenges and opportunities at W&M. If they happen to have some W&M in their background, all the better.
I do like the line-up of overseers. Well done there.

I doubt that is the reason for Jeremy. But, there are major fiscal challenges. W&M is still paying former Coach Shaver and still paying former AD Huge, has a greatly (or totally) depleted Tribe Club fund, and has come through a difficult and contentious 2 year period that included a shutdown of all athletics due to COVID. It will be a big job and likely for less money due to all of the above mentioned factors. On the plus side, there could be high energy and possible increase in donations with the return of fans to the stands if the right person with the right vision is selected. Someone who understands W&M, can connect with the existing student body, interact well with the alumni and have the personality to be able to raise funds.

We need to hire someone who can engage with the student athletes, parents, community, and find donors. Hire good people to run the day to day. Anything else is gravy. Don't do the first part and we're in trouble again.

This is kind of where I was headed with my comments. I think you're right, but the part I emboldened in your reply is the part that we missed on last time, IMO. Huge was high energy and willing to change things. Even now, I like the spirit of some of the changes she made, even though her tenure was disastrous for many other (well-documented) reasons. It's worth mentioning that she did have W&M in her background with her older brother playing for Laycock.

No idea if it was discussed here or not but it is in reference to a "clarification" tweet that Latrelle, for some reason, felt compelled to tweet. In essence it said he didn't leave because of academic or athletic performance (he said he was doing great) but because of the university's racial insensitivity and a lack of confidence in the medical staff. Honestly, I think he has had people in his ear telling him he's too good for W&M, decided to transfer, and then hasn't had the reception he was hoping for in the transfer portal. So now he's making sure people know he wasn't forced out or anything. Other than the fact he tweeted it, the most disappointing thing about the tweet was that Hollis Mathis liked the tweet. Poor decision.
