Through 1K, Hociel is just cruising - about 70 meters behind the leader, Kiptoo.

cross country novice here. I see 400 runners and think about the start. Am I wrong to think it might be 10 seconds before some runners reach the starting line? Is there a method to determine where your starting position is or is it first come first served? Seems like a big advantage to be at the front and get out clean.

Sorry about dropping the thread, but my real job interfered ...

Hociel ran a smart race - that is what coach Jon Warren has his runners do on a hilly course - let others go out too fast, then reel them in.

With respect to the start, any course that is certified for a national meet must have a super wide (and long) straightaway in order for runners to get separated. This OSU course looked to be ideal - looked like at least 800 meters for the straightaway.

Congrats to both on making it to the championships and getting to race. And to Grace, for the excellent finish.
