Why would that be stirring the pot? As a small conference school going up against the power conferences, Liberty is deserving as well.

Wishing success for Norfolk State, UNCG, App. State, Drexel, Iona, Liberty, North Texas, etc. against the big name conference schools.

I've heard a rumor that Liberty might generate controversy on message boards. I'll talk to my sources and see if I can't firm that up.

So then, you and Giles have attempted to turn this thread into a political statement where none existed before? Got it. 07-coffee3

No, I'm attempting to add a bit of levity and you whiffed on it like a toddler chasing a Gerrit Cole four-seamer.

Look closer: 05-stirthepot has a smile on his face.

More like you got called out on it and whiffed with your response like a rookie chasing a Jacob deGrom slider. Look closely now on your way back to the dugout - 05-stirthepot

My wife attended App. St. and that's the way I presented it to her as well. She said it is going to be hard for her to root against either team. At least one of them will advance - only to be pasted in the next game by Gonzaga.

Either you're not getting it or you're next-level getting it and I've got too much of a headache to discern one from the other.

Since they went to 68 teams there has always been two play in games with 16 seeds. 16 seeds are always auto bids.. Are you suggesting that the play in games should not include 16 seeds? Or that NSU and App should not be 16 seeds?

I would totally be on board with no conference champions being sent to the playing game. Send The Last Four In to Dayton and let them play their way in. Of course, that will never happen because you will get a P5 elimination game right off the bat and well we need the 7th place SEC and 6th place Pac12 teams around on the first Thursday.

If anything, I think you get rid of the at-large play in, but now I'm not sure why. Either:

* you're giving a 5 or 6 matched up with a play-in winner the advantage of playing an opponent that's had more travel and less rest compared to the non-play-in opponent of a similar seed, or
* you're giving the play-in opponent an advantage with the momentum of a win. There's a reason that, with the exception of 2019, a First Four at-large winner has gone on to win at least once in the round of 64 every year since they started doing it in 2011. La Salle, Tennessee and Syracuse advanced to the Sweet 16 from the First Four, and of course you know what happened with VCU.

Either expand the field to 128 and add one campus-site round, expand to 80 and have all the 13-16 seeds play-in, or just go back to 64. And I can already hear people protesting that it's not fair to make all the lower seeds play in, but consider this: You get a tournament unit if you win, regardless if you're beating Gonzaga in the first round or Ding-Dong University in the play-in round. In the last tournament (2019), that unit was worth $280,030. And you also get two national TV exposures. So it's not really that bad a deal.

RE: BEHOLD
The play in game is dumb. Just pick 64 teams. You are gonna have teams cry about being left out no matter how many teams you pick (unless you pick 328).

I mean, I guess its fun to have Tuesday night games but it just seems pointless to me. And if you lose the play in game, did you really participate in the NCAA tourney?

All I’m saying is no conference champ should be in a play-in-game. Alter the seeds if needed or slide someone else there. Putting Norfolk State up against App State is just the powers that be trying to eliminate a mid major right off the bat to protect a favored school. Winning your conference should earn you an actual spot in the dance.

How? Make them both 16 seeds, unless they pull a UMBC miracle, they're both getting boatraced. I seriously doubt they're making NSU and App play each other to protect Gonzaga.

RE: BEHOLD
In an ideal world, everybody gets in, all pairings and playing locations are made by a blind draw - like how the lottery ping-pong balls pop up. That way no one gets left out and there are no manufactured easy games where the perceived #1 team gets to play the perceived #64 team in their own backyard with the majority of the stadium filled with their fans.

Let's face it ... this is all about the money and the big conference schools control it. With blind pairings you would have more of the ODU's of the world playing teams like UNCG in the first round than we would ever see currently and that gives schools like that and conferences like theirs a way to advance and get more money themselves. Unfortunately, much like ODU getting into a really strong conference, it will probably never happen.

This would be so fun to do the NCAA tournament, kind of like the World Cup does with drawing groups.

From a viewership standpoint, the play in games just annoy me and would prefer the 64 team format. However, if it's true that they get an NCAA game credit with a win, then I think it's good especially for the 16 vs 16 playins. Gives a little income boost to a team that would otherwise have virtually 0 chance if they were to play the 1 seed right away instead.

A little money, $1.8 million per game is huge to NSU, beat App St that's $3.6 mil. If we drop back to 64, just means fewer at large teams.

That 1.8 mil is probably split up amongst all the MEAC teams, with NSU getting the biggest piece

KingYou know the state of virginia has been pretty awesome with getting to the tournament. They tied the record a couple of years ago with getting 7 in. This year doing 5 I think is only 1 behind texas having 6. Not bad. Let's hope next year we can be on this list again. Let's go Norfolk state, vcu, uva,vt and liberty. I think liberty is good enough to have a couple of wins
It's not going to happen but what if norfolk state beats app st and then shocks the world by beating Gonzaga? Wouldn't that be something?
