Great season? Standard for UAB basketball must be higher - Goodman (AL.com)
https://www.al.com/uab/2021/03/great-sea...igher.html
Quote:Another year for UAB in the Conference USA tournament, and another quick exit after a loss to a better team.
Western Kentucky 64, UAB 60 was a pre-noon fistfight before anyone was finished with their morning’s second cup of coffee. Great game. Terrible conference.
When UAB coach Andy Kennedy took over at UAB last year, he said his plan was to return the Blazers to their “rightful place on the college basketball landscape.” This ain’t it, so don’t get comfortable, don’t start settling for pretty good in CUSA and, most certainly, don’t even begin to think that this modest level of success is anywhere close to the ceiling for UAB.
UAB basketball should be better than this every single season.

Reality check. UAB basketball is better than this. Moving in the right direction is a good first step.

He’s not saying anything all of us don’t agree with but he’s not putting it into context. This was AK’s first season, with a completely brand new team, in the middle of COVID, inheriting a derelict program from the previous coaching staff. Put into context this was a very solid season. I will not be satisfied with 4th place finishes in CUSA; but for this year, and in the proper context, this was a good season.

I think going forward AK may feel like this season is the floor. We’ll take it as a down, disappointing year, but don’t get used to it

I've got to disagree with him on one crucial point.
This is NOT a terrible conference.
UTEP went into Kansas the other night and led by 14 at the half in Lawrence. Yes they lost by 5, but they did better than Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, and whole slew of lesser Big 12 teams. This is the 7th or 8th best team in our conference. Anyone think that Kansas would go undefeated through CUSA if they had to play home and homes? Cause I don't.
WKU beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa this year. See how the mid level SEC teams (that will get an at large bid) are doing against Alabama this year.
CUSA has won a game in the NCAA's 4 out of the last 5 years. There's a reason for that. We are systematically undervalued.
Yes, we need to get better at playing the game (whatever "the game" is now that NET rules the roost). But I think it is really unfair to say that this conference is terrible.
It is a terrible conference in the sense that there are several really good competitive teams every year and only one gets to go the NCAA's. But there is some good basketball played here.
At any rate, good game yesterday. Kennedy is a good coach, he'll have you going in the right direction.

While they might go undefeated, I think this is still a legit argument, and its the counter argument to putting .500 power conference teams in the tournament over .850 teams from lesser conferences.
Team A has some good wins and, while having a lot of losses, has no bad losses.
Team B has some bad losses and, while having a lot of wins, has no good wins.
Yeah, team A plays a ton of good teams and team B plays a ton of bad teams. Every team is going to have some good nights and some bad nights. I'm convinced that if you took team A and team B and swapped conferences, they'd have similar results.
Maybe not...but when choosing between the team that proved they couldn't win half of their games against good teams vs. the team that never had a chance to prove it, I'd take that team that never had a chance, 10 times out of 10

"This is NOT a terrible conference."...
But it is a poorly managed conference!

I know Kansas would go undefeated in this conference. If Memphis did and they did. Kansas would.

Cusa is garbage. No debating that. 5 teams in the NET Top 100 is a bit of a joke considering most of our high major games got pulled from us as a conference. Meaning we replaced those games with definite wins.
As far as Goodman goes. I miss the days of scarbinksy, as much as I didn’t really like him.
