RE: Baseball: Series vs. Appalachian State
The Hawks tied a school record this weekend, for fewest runs allowed in a 3-game series. The last time the Hawks allowed just 3 runs in a 3-game set was 2006 against Maryland-Eastern Shore.

Great weekend! Great to see our #1,2 guys get it going on the mound. If we are going to make a run we need them both!

And the pen was stellar all weekend, too. Especially today when we had to “empty the bucket” and use a ton of arms of varying skill levels. Just 1 run allowed by the pen all weekend, and it came against 2 of our least used arms.

That too. Great to see all 3 phases of the game clicking all weekend.

Now we get to see if we can keep it going against a ranked ECU team on Wednesday. If I'm Coach Hood, I use one of the top relief arms, like Hunter Hodges or Breydan Gorham, as an "opener".

I don't think they had to "empty the bucket" to get the W. Seemed more like an opportunity to get some arms on the mound who need some time. We have such a deep pen with the holdovers from the shutdown, that we have guys who just aren't getting a chance to pitch and gain some experience and confidence.

I agree with both of your last 2 posts. Needed to get some young guys some innings and confidence today. And, I was thinking that Hodges and/or Gorham should be strongly considered against ECU. Smith should be able to give 2 on the back end as well. Good to see Herring back as well.

Game flow dictated we needed to use Benton at one spot and Adam Smith at another. But you’re right that we didn’t need to use other key arms today. My larger point was that, despite using THAT many arms, with a few of them not being key guys, we still only allowed 1 run. Impressive stuff.

It was impressive. And coach felt we had the ability to "rescue" anyone of they got in trouble with our known lock down pithers like Smith, which did happen at the end. Smith may be our most important pitcher. Dude is flat out nasty when he comes in.

Why would you not use your normal rotation?

Almost never use weekend guys mid-week. It's happened, but rarely.

RE: Baseball: Series vs. Appalachian State
I would think one of the young guys would start and see what happens from there. Pitching is in good shape after this weekend and they should all be ready to go other than the weekend starters. I doubt Gorham or Hodges start ,probably more like Chenault,Shafer would be my guess.

Chenault had a good outing yesterday so maybe him or Shafer. There’s a good chance that we will see many of these young guys.

I was referring to your normal weekday starters

N.C.State baseball is on covid pause. Will not be playing Duke this weekend. Nothing said yet about our game Wednesday.

Right... considering this is our first mid week game.

Well don't forget, the Thursday game against Cincinnati was treated like a midweek game by both coaches. Shafer got the start in that one.

However, he did pitch a strong inning in relief yesterday (Chenault also did well), and with a strong opponent like ECU, the coaching staff may feel more comfortable using a more veteran arm to start and leaving a guy like Shafer as a bullpen option.

We'll see. Shafer is probably the favorite but if it were up to me, I'd go with Gorham or Hodges.
