Baseball: Series vs. Appalachian State
The Hawks hit the diamond again this weekend against App St., with first pitch tonight (Friday) scheduled for 6 PM. All 3 games this weekend will be on FloSports.

The Mountaineers enter at 6-5. App started their season winning 6 of their first 8, including a nice win over ETSU (8-4), but they just got swept this past weekend against # 15 ECU. The Mountaineers were outscored 28-6 over the 3-game series.

Expect to see Junior lefty Tyler Tuthill on the bump tonight for Appalachian State, as he's been the ace of the staff for the first 3 weekends. Tuthill is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 10 K's and 11 BB's in 17.1 innings.

Offensively, the Mountaineers have been led by a very productive infield, which includes junior 2B Luke Drumheller (.286, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 3 SB, .828 OPS), senior 1B Robbie Young (.270, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 3 SB, .818 OPS) and senior SS Bailey Welch (.294, 6 RBI, .787 OPS). Senior outfielder Kendall McGowan has supplied a pair of HR's.

Baseball Preview: Appalachian State

WILMINGTON, N.C. - UNCW's season opening 14-game homestand behind to wind down this weekend when the Seahawks host Appalachian State beginning on Friday with a 6 p.m. start.

UNCW carries a 7-3 mark into the weekend after splitting four games with Cincinnati last weekend, earning that split on Trevor Marsh's game-winning homer in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday for a 9-8 win.

Appalachian State, meanwhile, stands at 6-5 on the young season after dropping three at nationally-ranked East Carolina last weekend. The Mountaineers have won two weekend series on the season against Winthrop and North Carolina A&T.

The Mountaineers last visited Brooks Field in 2018 with the Seahawks winning the series in walk-off fashion with a 2-1 win in ten innings.

The Seahawks lead the all-time series, 6-2.

UNCW caps the homestand on Mar. 17 with a 6 p.m. start against East Carolina and then hits the road for three games at William & Mary to open Colonial Athletic Association play.

App's 4th hit of the game nearly brings home a 2nd run in the inning, but Lifrieri guns down the runner at home to save further damage.

1-0 App, bottom 3rd.

Hawks explode for 4 runs in the 4th, highlighted by a deep 3-run jack by Suggs! Tuthill has also walked 2 in the inning and delivered a costly wild pitch that tied the game at 1.

They're still batting. 1 on, 1 out.

4-1 Hawks!

1 on, 1 out for the Hawks in the bottom of the 6th. Tuthill just hit the 90 pitch mark for App St.

The score is still 4-1 Seahawks.

Hawks tack on a run in the 7th without needing a hit. Bridges led off the a walk, got to 2nd on a wild pitch, and on the ensuing throw to second, two errors brought Bridges in.

5-1 Hawks.

Hodges replaces Roupp after 7 quality innings of work. He immediately gets 2 up, 2 down on grounders in the 8th.

Solo bomb by Brandenburg in the bottom of the 8th makes it 6-1! He hit that thing hard on a rope.

Good to see Roupp pound the fastball to set up his stuff. The freshman from New Hanover looked good to me in the 8th. He's good. Good to close it out in the 9th. Hawks really didn't swing the bats well today but got some big flys. I'm hoping for a better plate approach tomorrow. Too many K's when we could have advanced the ball. Need to improve against quality pitching that we will see.

RE: Baseball: Series vs. Appalachian State
Since we swept VCU opening weekend, the Rams have done well, and have won 6 of their last 7 to improve to 7-6. Recently they split two midweek games with # 19 Virginia Tech.

Western Carolina is currently on a 4-game winning streak and is 9-4.

Hodges is good and might be the best true freshman pitcher on the team. Doesn't throw really hard but has great stuff and can spin it with the best of them. Chenault came in as a big time recruit in this class but has not located well and the velo is just not there. He is not draft eligible this year but is a reclass so he will be next season. As it stands now he has no chance of being drafted in any round next year unless that velo pops to sitting 93 and touching 95 plus. Calvert is now the Sunday guy and has looked solid so far.

I’m glad to hear that Chenault isn’t draft eligible this year, as I was told he is. He needs that extra year of development, for sure.

No doubt he needs to get better but he would not be drafted so he has plenty of time.

Same lineup for the Hawks today in game 2 as they had in game 1. They'll face yet another lefty (senior Quinton Martinez), the 6th straight lefty starter we've gone up against.
