MSU Spartans presented by Rocket Mortgage
At least they didn't agree to MSU Rockets (yet)!

Is this for all sports or just basketball?

Big Ten payouts are already among the biggest - what made Michigan State do this?

I'm going with more money? Not sure and we shall see if it catches on. I'm certainly not a fan, but to each their own, got to pay the bills.

But they were already making outrageous amounts of money. I mean, you don't see schools is lower-paying conferences doing this (at least, not yet), so why would a team already near the top in terms of revenue feel the need to pimp themselves out for more?

I have no real answer for you, Mark. I mean, universities are run like businesses so why should any of them turn away money? Does it matter how much their TV deal is worth? So it's one of the largest, do they turn down money just because of that? If MSU is ok with a sponsor attaching their name to them, so be it. I personally don't like it...at all!

I remember when bowls renamed to Corporate sponsors. When the NBA allowed advertising on uniforms. College arenas taking on sponsors names. I thought it was all crazy, but now it's just the norm.

I should add, just because TV payouts are enormous for some, doesn't mean your overall revenue is at the top. This holds true for MSU if I remember correctly. Dollars are hard to come by today, maybe they need this to get in the black?

I hate it so much. Soon everyone will be doing it.

I didn't think Michigan State was very marketable with their recent scandal. I would have thought a more cash strapped school like Maryland or Rutgers would have been first.

That was my whole point, but I would've gone with Cincinnati or another AAC team. Now those teams will be forced to do this - and it won't even help them compete because the teams in front of them will be doing it, too. It's a seemingly never-ending escalation of more revenue, more spending, more revenue, more spending, more, more, more...

Mark, I'm going to be frank with you, why is it bothering you? You are taking a very "liberal" approach, for lack of a better word, towards this. Rocket Mortgage is a Michigan based company that wanted to add to an already commercialized sport. Michigan State accepted and that's how a free market works, is it not?
If Kroger, Procter & Gamble or Skyline Chili, all Cincinnati based companies, want to sponsor the Bearcats, more power to them.
I'm no Michigan State fan, but if this is what is needed, so be it. Who are we to discourage anyone from making money?

I really enjoy when you visit us here at the BIG forum. I mean no disrespect, I'm just having a hard time understanding why this is bothering some folks.

Is nothing sacred anymore? Even the school names aren't off limits now. Where are we going to draw the line? Sure, they CAN sell their name but SHOULD they? Next the logo will be Sparty riding a rocket and the school colors will be changed.

No, nothing is sacred anymore. As I've mentioned before, I don't like this. What I'm having a hard time with is you have mentioned Maryland and Rutgers, Mark mentioned Cincinnati as it being acceptable for doing this? Yet, you're pissed because Michigan State is doing it? I get the frustration, but what if MSU is strapped and truly needs this money? To be honest, I would be shocked if VT wasn't looking to do the same, they aren't sitting the world on fire with their Revenue from what I see. That's the difference between the ACC and the BIG, BIG leads, ACC follows, BIG is richer. I don't care who's richer, but it's a big topic on this site.
End. Of. Story.
I try to always, always be fair, but I must be fair to myself as well and be honest. No disrespect to either of you fellow posters, I appreciate you both.

I'm just reminded of this. In the end all you have is the love you have shared (and not the carnal variety) and your good name if you have kept it good. In an unjust world even a good name can be wrongfully besmirched, so ultimately only God judges us. But why sell your love or your name when they are the only two things of value in this life, and the two things that can be used to help others? That's why I'm against this. Today nobody should want to tag their name to any corporate product because those corporations likely will never represent your beliefs and will only use your good name to lend credibility to their own beliefs.

Money you can't take with you. Fame dies with the memory of a generation, but integrity can endure in families for generations. And money can never repair your character or your name.

I know this will sound corny but I'm not pissed, I'm just disappointed. This is marking the end of an era where the corporate sponsors will complete their takeover and we won't be able to blissfully ignore it anymore. Since Michigan State is starting it, I'm targeting my ire towards them and I hope it spectacularly backfires so as it stops the trend (and I just can't stand MSU).

Yes, I agree, that I hate the decision to do this by MSU. It's tacky and just ignorant as far as I'm concerned. It's also legal and their right to do this so I'll leave it at that. I don't want to get "political", this isn't the place for that. I'm not going to disagree with anyone who hates this, I do too, but I also agree with others making money. The conversation of money and college sports is very deep; a lot deeper than what this threads topic is about.
