And I'm sure, those "people" are making money off of this deal, right?

I should have been more clear to avoid being so easily misunderstood. When I said "people" I was not just referring to the athletic department or teams. I was also referring to student-athletes. Wearing a uniform with the manufacturer's name is not the same thing as "I play for NIU presented by ... ." Event announcers already cheapen sports by using such phrases as "this basket was sponsored by ... ," almost like the sponsor paid for the points, or they wouldn't have been scored without the sponsor.

A line has to be drawn somewhere, and imo MSU crossed it.

Yup. I think once i got to about 16 different sponsors in a Cub broadcast. I think Pat Hughes 5th inning crap break is sponsored by Charmin.

For those who don't want to read the story, thanks to a five-year deal, rather than call them Michigan State Spartans, they'll be announced as the "MSU Spartans Presented by Rocket Mortgage"

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/michigan-st...57968.html

Question: So can STF sell us as the "NIU Huskies Presented by Purina One" or do we go local as in the "NIU Huskies Presented by Fattys".

I can't believe a publicaly funded university (in essence, property of the state of Michigan) is allowed to legally do this.

While I think it's tacky, what is the difference between that and name on arena, sponsorship all over stadiums and on air ads?

What I think is more of a conflict of interest is allowing beer companies to sponsor collegiate athletics. But no one a has an issue with that when their school gets $ from it.

There's a big difference between naming a building and replacing the school name (or changing it in this case). What's to stop them from the school becomming MSU presented by "fill in corporate sponsor that changes ever 10 years"?

At what point does a publicly funded university not have free reign in it's names?

I want to say back in the 90s (or late 80s maybe) there was a push to change Northern Illinois University to the University of Northern Illinois and it faced backlash and maybe even was voted down. That's a miniscule change compated to what Michigan State could be opening the door for.

I mean....Boise State had their blue turf and now Eastern Michigan has gray turf.

This is the same thing (basically....;-)

Nothing.

And stadium, arena, billboard, uniform, radio ad, intro....no matter how you cut it, $ goes to athletics.

Northwestern has sold its head coach to the highest bidder.

He is no longer Pat Fitzgerald, he is now "Dan and Susan Jones Family Head Football Coach Pat Fitzgerald." I wonder if he has to come to their kids' birthday parties dressed as a clown and make balloon animals and juggle for them.

DI football players really are trained seals if they don't strike soon.

Kind of like car dealers putting their stickers on cars that they sell. You pay them for the vehicle and the dealers gets free advertising

What would happen if a student-athlete tried to pull those off a uniform, I wonder.

Most of the head coaching positions in the Ivy League are endowed. The going rate to have your name attach to a head coach is around $2 million to $5 million. If you have that money, please call STF ASAP.

I do not believe any of our coaches have endowed positions.

At Michigan State it will cost you $5 million for the head football or basketball endowment.

Notre Dame's head coaching position is also funded by an endowment, as is a significant part of their athletic scholarships. It's a very good use of donations, long term, and NIU should try to endow their scholarships. I have to think that at least a few are funded through endowments. Anyone know.

Meghann Cefratti - Grant Thornton Professor of Accountancy
Pam Smith - KPMG Endowed Professor of Accountancy
Jim Young - PricewaterhouseCoopers Professor
Mark Groza - Enterprise Holdings Associate Professor of Sales

Where are these fine names from you ask? None other than NIU's College of Business. In fact some of the lecture halls are named after major corporations, including the Caterpillar lecture hall. We've been doing this since I was I in class there in 2011. In fact my OMIS Professor was the Walmart Professor of Excellence.

Guess this is the way the world goes. Brought to you, by Carl's Jr.

This is why I wish the Grotto would have gotten into this game. They may still exist today if they had done this. They would be perfect for sponsoring the building of new structures on campus. When a building is being built, there would be a sign in front that says, "This building's erection sponsored by the Paperback Grotto." 04-jawdrop

I'm all for getting every academic and athletic nickel we can from the co's and private donors, and giving them naming rights they can enjoy and benefit from. Great for all public universities. Just please no corporate logos on uniforms. I know pro-soccer does it, but lets keep that one bit of real estate sacred.

I agree, it's a little to a lot tacky. Don't like it in the NBA, don't even like it on NFL practice jerseys.
