you dont need him to be a star.. he was doing 14 and 7 at baylor on a super elite baylor.. even 8 and 5 at smu would be a major win..

Jank’s evaluation and selection of bigs guys has been miserable.

Chargois didn’t really meet expectations.
Agau was always injured
Ray was always injured
Jasey is a ten minute per game backup at best.
Anei needs to prove he can play under control. He’s still a bit of a wild card
And Clark? The guy had to pack it in and retire last November due to his knees. All the sudden he’s the answer? I’m skeptical.

Jank’s roster is looking like the College Basketball
version of Survivor. He should have been voted off the Island last season.

your guards are what are going to take you to the promised land if you make it there.. none of your bigs need to be answers, just not detriments

anei has elite shot blocking ability...would be a starter on most top 15 team, would have been the starter at okstate had he stayed

clark was a starter on a top 5 Baylor team, doing 14 and 7..those stats i believe are the best among any big currently in the aac.. not counting that was from tougher competition.
and he retired because he said his knees hurt when he jumped and moved around and was worried about long term effects, and said theyve stopped hurting despite him working out and playing and felt he could probably get back in...

anei and clark both have the potential to be great.. you could make the tourney even if they arent ..obviously backup bigs are needed if health issues arise .. outside of health the talent is there

you talk about your miss ratio with jank, but all those misses weren't great on paper adds to begin with (ray, jasey, chargois, agau)..none of them came in with any expectation of being great..chargois built his hype at smu as a sophomore then regressed.. anei and clark are different in that both come in with expectation

"your guards are what are going to take you to the promised land if you make it there.. none of your bigs need to be answers, just not detriments" - thank you.
Even though we've always had high level PG when we've gone deep in the tourney, some Memphis fans think we're good at PG as the roster is now.......SMH.

This is EXACTLY the difference between Kelvin and Jank. None of SMU’s guys improve much. Kelvin takes his (sorta) bigs and works them into a system where they can develop and flourish. Jank’s guys continue with bad habits like Chaggy’s stupid head fake and all of them dribbling into traffic instead of learning the interior passing skill that was a characteristic of LB teams.
On defense Anei leaves his feet far too often and it gets him into foul trouble. Jasey does run the floor well but he’s not that great a defender abd can’t make a layup on the other end. Clark’s knees have an expiration date that grows closer with increased use.
It is a very nice roster of guards and wings. Apparently Todo and Lundblade can really shoot and we know Nutall can. The Weathers brothers are not good shooters but do manage to score. Is that from taking way too many shots or is it penetration and putbacks?
Phelps is apparently very good defender and a quality get. The “new” Smith is coming back from two broken wrists... maybe he redshirts?

I would trust Kelvin to develop this SMU roster into a pretty damn good team. Jank will underachieve....as usual. It’s a decent roster.

Per an Instagram story a few days ago one of ECUs spring commits Jaquan Scott signed his LOI. First piece of recruiting “news” since Gardner left.

He's a good one, glad he's gone for our sake. We had no answer for his combined height & quickness. Mark has shown he can play too, but we do match up better with him.

Looks like Houston might get a lot of production off the bench from Taze Moore and Carlton, and like they might be able to earn a lot of minutes.

I'm guessing that's not the whole team, but more likely your projected 9 man rotation?

I'm seeing nothing on the internet about Justin Gorham or Brison Gresham - perhaps they've decided not to return?

How about Powell and Elvin - are they walk-ons, or just young guys who didn't play much and are returning?

.

More importantly, what do you think of the early predictions by Lunardi and Katz, who would have Houston ranked around 12th in the nation - - does that ring true as you see it?

ryan elvin is a walk on...dejon, gorham and greshman will all not return

we only play a 9 man rotation, i just listed the preseason top 9, powell and our 2 freshman (ramon and robbie) as of today have the lowest probability of being in the 9th so i didnt list them (though many think our freshman walker will jump someone)

and ranked 12th seems about right.. a couple guys need to improve their percentages tho .. on paper i would have liked a stretch 4 or a true pg ready to start, but sampson likes the roster,( talked about how next years team will be really good). i see a "on paper" hole or 2 but sampson doesnt seem to have an issue with it, thats the biggest confidence factor for this team, they havent been recruiting home run transfers we'd be seen as favorites for. despite having a free ship.

sahvir wheeler and marcus williams were top 20 elite transfers from houston that transferred to be closer to "home".. we didnt recruit either ..there are like 6 other similar stories

He narrowed down to a top ten last week. Only AAC school on the list was Wichita State.

Texas, Kentucky, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Gonzaga, Michigan, LSU, Oregon State, Stanford and Wichita State.

I'd say it's a long shot WSU lands him BUT .... he did commit to Billy Kennedy at Texas A&M in 2018 right before he got fired. Kennedy is on WSU's bench as an assistant.

Edwards 31.2 mpg, 10.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.1 spg, 0.5 bpg FG3%: .418
Mark 20.1 mpg, 7.8 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.7 apg, 0.9 spg, 0.2 bpg
White 10.1 mpg, 6.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 0.8 apg, 0.4 spg, 0.8 bpg FG3%: .400
Chaney 14.1 mpg, 4.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 0.5 apg, 0.5 spg, 0.7 bpg, FG2%: .665

Bench

Carlton (tr) 11.3 mpg, 3.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 0.7 apg, 0.4 spg, 1.1 bpg
Taze (tr) 22.3 mpg, 12.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.3 spg, 0.6 bpg
Shead 9.9 mpg, 3.3 ppg, 1.1 rpg, 1.5 apg, 0.8 spg, 0.2 bpg FG2%: .559
Roberts 10.8 mpg, 1.9 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 0.3 apg, 0.4 spg, 0.6 bpg

Looks like Houston might get a lot of production off the bench from Taze Moore and Carlton, and like they might be able to earn a lot of minutes.

I'm guessing that's not the whole team, but more likely your projected 9 man rotation?

I'm seeing nothing on the internet about Justin Gorham or Brison Gresham - perhaps they've decided not to return?

How about Powell and Elvin - are they walk-ons, or just young guys who didn't play much and are returning?

.

More importantly, what do you think of the early predictions by Lunardi and Katz, who would have Houston ranked around 12th in the nation - - does that ring true as you see it?

.

ryan elvin is a walk on...dejon, gorham and greshman will all not return

we only play a 9 man rotation, i just listed the preseason top 9, powell and our 2 freshman (ramon and robbie) as of today have the lowest probability of being in the 9th so i didnt list them (though many think our freshman walker will jump someone)

expected line up

Sasser (6'1" Jr. G) 31.9 mpg, 13.7 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.4 spg
Edwards (Sr.) 31.2 mpg, 10.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.1 spg, 0.5 bpg FG3%: .418
Mark (6'5" So. G) 20.1 mpg, 7.8 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.7 apg, 0.9 spg, 0.2 bpg
White (6'8" Sr. F) 10.1 mpg, 6.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 0.8 apg, 0.4 spg, 0.8 bpg FG3%: .400
Chaney (6'8" Jr. F) 14.1 mpg, 4.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 0.5 apg, 0.5 spg, 0.7 bpg, FG2%: .665

Bench

Carlton (6'11" Sr. F) 11.3 mpg, 3.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 0.7 apg, 0.4 spg, 1.1 bpg
Taze (6'5" Sr. F) 22.3 mpg, 12.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.3 spg, 0.6 bpg
Shead (6'1" So. G) 9.9 mpg, 3.3 ppg, 1.1 rpg, 1.5 apg, 0.8 spg, 0.2 bpg FG2%: .559
Roberts (6'7" So. F) 10.8 mpg, 1.9 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 0.3 apg, 0.4 spg, 0.6 bpg

The Rest:

Powell (So.) 5.8 mpg, 2.3 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 0.1 apt, 0.1 spg, 0.3 bpg
Ramon Walker (incoming 6'5" F recruit - ranked #160 nationally (24/7))
Robbie Armbrester (incoming PF recruit - ranked #213 nationally (24/7))

According to 24/7, the Cougars will also have:

Ja'Vier Francis (incoming C recruit - ranked #136 nationally (24/7))

Houston's recruiting class is ranked #2 in the AAC and #45 overall nationally by 247sports.com.

https://247sports.com/college/houston/Se...l/Commits/

.

So Houston is apparently losing:

Gorham (6'7" F): 27.8 mpg, 8.4 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 1.2 apg, 0.8 spg, 0.5 bpg
Jarreau (6'5" G): 28.3 mpg, 10.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1.3 spg, 0.5 bpg
Grimes (6'5" G): 32.8 mpg, 17.8 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2 apg, 1.4 spg, 0.3 bpg
Mills (6'3" G): 19.0 mpg, 9.8 pg, 1.3 rpg, 0.3 apg, 1.3 spg, 0.0 bpg
Gresham (6'8" F): 17.2 mpg, 3.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 0.3 apg, 0.5 spg, 1.5 bpg

Total: 125.1 mpg; 49.6 ppg; 24 rpg; 9.1 apg; 5.2 spg; 2.8 bpg

and adding:

Carlton (6'11" Sr. F) 11.3 mpg, 3.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 0.7 apg, 0.4 spg, 1.1 bpg
Taze Moore (6'5" Sr. F) 22.3 mpg, 12.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.3 spg, 0.6 bpg
Edwards (6'4" Sr. G) 31.2 mpg, 10.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 2.8 apg, 1.1 spg, 0.5 bpg

plus 3 incoming recruits:

Ramon Walker (incoming 6'5" F recruit - ranked #160 nationally (24/7))
Robbie Armbrester (incoming PF recruit - ranked #213 nationally (24/7))
Ja'Vier Francis (incoming C recruit - ranked #136 nationally (24/7))

.

If I got all that right, it looks like Houston will have 6 upperclassmen, 4 Sophomores, and 3 Freshmen, with 7 returning and 6 new players (3 Seniors, 3 Freshmen).

It looks like Coach Sampson and staff are going to have his work cut out for them, with a lot of gaps (scoring, rebounding, etc.) and mpg to fill. They'll have a very talented team, but half the guys are new to the team, and it will take a lot of hard work to meld them all into a smoothly-functioning unit.

It looks like there could be an interesting battle for the AAC regular season championship next season.

I hadn’t seen that, our basketball coverage generally sucks. He seems like he has the Collin Smith mold, which would make sense as to why Dawkins wants him.

As I said a while ago, Moses Bol no longer with UCF. This confirms it.

In portal news, sounds like UC is in on Quinn Slazinski from Louisville and Ody Oguama from Wake Forest. Quinn in particularly would be a really nice get. I'd be happy to get Oguama for some inside depth as well.

Oguama would be nice depth as a rebounder - seems like a Reggie Chaney type. i do think Slazinski is a bit redundant with Davenport/Hensley. I think a dynamic wing athlete (and yes I know they don't grow on trees) is a much bigger need.

oguama started at wake, koval didnt at UNCG...koval obviously has an edge of being in the system for over a year.. but if miller is giving a clean slate, Oguama might not be a "depth" add...also with koval's eligibility in question and whats available in the portal..ody would be a major win

i dont think quinn is redundant, davenport should play the 3, he isnt a good post defender and was honestly getting push around by houston on the boxout for rebounds.. he is undersized for 4, elite size for a 3...so adding a 4 isnt redundant, i just dont think quinn is very good (he is from houston, I followed his career some.. he is like a little brother to Galen)
