New basketball league for 16-18 year olds will pay at least $100k/year
Sharing the news around to the boards I read the most.
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/03/04/overtime...-nba-.html
Quote:Overtime announced on Thursday that it plans to start a basketball league for 16-to-18-year-olds allowing them to earn at least $100,000 per year.
The Overtime Elite league will let players bypass traditional high school and collegiate levels while building their brand before becoming eligible for the NBA. It will start in September with 30 players, and will be based in a single location, which is still under discussion.
There's more info in the article if you are interested. I found this from a different article talking about the NBA commissioner's support for the new league. Looks like recruiting is about to change sooner than expected.

I doubt it changes it much. The 1 and dones will opt for G-league and maybe this league. If this league doesn’t fold in a year.

Can't be much of a "league" with just 30 players.

It would be like the G League "Elite" that signed Jalen Green and a few others. Just exhibition games (which I think Covid killed anyway, for the first season), with a lot of "elite" training time and publicity.
Nothing silly like high school getting in the way. Or those non-paying rules. Same as what the G-League Elite offers prospective college players. I think Green signed for $400K or $500K for just the one year, iirc.

RE: New basketball league for 16-18 year olds will pay at least $100k/year
More and more elite graduating HS players will gravitate to the G-league and other HS graduates will op to play abroad. This new pro league is another step in young players foregoing college. The dam has burst.
Overtime, more and more elite HS players will realize that college bb is a different game than pro ball, and deciding to play college ball will put them further behind in their development to play pro ball. And elite college players will continue to leave college earlier to turn pro here or abroad.
Someday, elite college teams may just have at best 4-star HS recruits. The AAC may well become more competitive with schools in the AAC. On the other hand, colleges may change their brand of ball in order to attract elite HS players, and will also filter down to lesser rated conferences.

I wouldn't waste time watching 16-18 year olds playing football or hockey, so why on God's green earth would anyone watch high school youths playing basketball, much less pay to watch them doing it?
Frankly, I'd rather watch some highly-dedicated 16-18 year-old jazz musicians jamming...

Next thing you know, they'll be charging up the wazoo to "pay per view" to watch kindergartners playing tiddly-winks!

They’re trying to go to a European soccer style development team model. It’s ridiculous. There are more important things that these kids need to learn than elite basketball skills at 16.

Looks like they were thrown in the G League bubble with other G League teams and played the actual season (just a month long), most likely due to covid. They actually got the 8th seed, but lost in the first round. I'm guess it goes back to exhibition games if/when things get back to normal. Green seemed to have a decent stat line for that shortened season.

It's mainly about those younger than us that post on or read these boards. Like the article mentions the 13-24 year olds (Gen Z). I'm not sure if I would watch it, but I know I'm not the target demographic anyway.

It’s not even that. If it was a soccer-like model, the kids would be contracted to an NBA team, with that team responsible for everything. With the draft, you can’t do that.
This is just somebody who’s going to be folding their business before it starts.

Don't say that to Kentucky fans. They think Calipari is clean. That their $50K a year compliance officer keeps him in line.

The compliance officer intercepts Fed Ex envelopes? OK.
