A 40 team NFL
Awhile back I mentioned 2 ways the NFL could add 4 teams. Either 4 CFL teams or 4 American teams. Made me think: why not both? (Like the girl in the El Paso commercial). How would these 8 additional cities be aligned (adding 1 per division)

Toronto
Winnipeg
Edmonton
Vancouver
St. Louis
San Antonio
San Diego
Portland

Divisions would need to be realigned with that number of new Western cities. I would also suspect BC Lions would be in over Edmonton or Winnipeg for Vancouver. The American cities are probably right.

The BC Lions ARE the Vancouver team. :). How would you align them? Would you put the Canadian teams with their American neighbors?

RE: A 40 team NFL
I missed that, my fault. I think they’d want Calgary and Montreal over Edmonton and Winnipeg. Assuming the NFL goes to 40 with 4 CFL teams and 4 US expansion teams in the cities mentioned, I think alignment would be something like this:

AFC
East: Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, MONTREAL, New England Patriots, New York Jets
North: Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, Pittsburgh Steelers
South: Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, ST LOUIS, Tennessee Titans
West: CALGARY, Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, SAN DIEGO

NFC
East: Arizona Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Football Team
North: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, TORONTO
South: Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, SAN ANTONIO, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
West: Los Angeles Rams, PORTLAND, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, VANCOUVER

Arizona in the east?

With 11 teams in Western cities, 1 had to shift elsewhere. The Cardinals are a historic rival with the current NFC East from 1970-2001 while both St. Louis and Phoenix. They moved to the NFC West when the Houston Texans joined the NFL and the league split into 8 4-team divisions. Because the Cardinals were in AriZona, they were left out of the NFC East.

As a Chiefs fan, I don't like losing rivalry games like Denver, Chargers and Raiders. Those rivalries go way back.

RE: A 40 team NFL
I swapped Winnipeg for Calgary, which makes for 12 teams west of Texas. Only Arizona and Denver aren't in the West Divisions:

AFC East: New England, NY Jets, Buffalo, Baltimore, Indianapolis
AFC South: Miami, Jacksonville, Tennessee, Houston, San Antonio*
AFC North: Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Denver
AFC West: Calgary*, Edmonton*, Las Vegas, LA Chargers, San Diego*

NFC East: NY Giants, Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington, Toronto*
NFC South: Tampa Bay, Arizona, New Orleans, Carolina, Atlanta
NFC North: Green Bay, Chicago, Minnesota, Detroit, Saint Louis*
NFC West: Vancouver*, Seattle, Portland*, LA Rams, San Francisco

Schedule would be 8 games against your division rivals; 5 games against 1 division from your own conference; and 1 from each of the divisions in the opposite conference (based on order of finish)

Twelve teams in each conference make the playoffs, but all of the division champions get byes. This leads the NFL to have a Friday Night and Monday night playoff game in both the Wildcard and Divisional rounds:

Friday 8:00 PM Eastern
Saturday 1:00 PM Eastern
Saturday 4:40 PM Eastern
Saturday 8:20 PM Eastern
Sunday 1:00 PM Eastern
Sunday 4:40 PM Eastern
Sunday 8:20 PM Eastern
Monday 8:00 PM Eastern

Based on this season's calendar, this would be:
January 21-24, 2022: Wild Card Round
January 28-31, 2022: Divisional Round
February 6-7, 2022: Conference Semifinals
February 14, 2022: Conference Finals
February 28, 2022: Super Bowl

The College Football Playoff responds by moving its championship game to Thursday night.

BTW, my calendar would be:

Week 1 of 18 game schedule: Sunday of Labor Day weekend
Everyone gets 1 bye, play 1st 6 and last 6 without break
Doubleheaders on SNF & MNF every week
Other than Thanksgiving, no more TNF
No more London games
7 playoff teams, bye week before SB

With Winnipeg instead of Calgary, I'd move Denver to the AFC West and put Winnipeg in the AFC North. Winnipeg really isn't that close to anyone in their division - but it's more or less due north of Kansas City despite it being 800+ miles. Arizona would then be the only team in the Mountain and Pacific Time Zones not in one of the two West Divisions.

That said Winnipeg is roughly half the size of Calgary or Edmonton. The NFL would probably want Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal, leaving one of Calgary/Edmonton:

AFC East: New England, NY Jets, Buffalo, Baltimore, Montreal*
AFC South: Miami, Jacksonville, Tennessee, Houston, San Antonio*
AFC North: Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Indianapolis
AFC West: Denver, Edmonton*, Las Vegas, LA Chargers, San Diego*

NFC East: NY Giants, Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington, Toronto*
NFC South: Tampa Bay, Arizona, New Orleans, Carolina, Atlanta
NFC North: Green Bay, Chicago, Minnesota, Detroit, Saint Louis*
NFC West: Vancouver*, Seattle, Portland*, LA Rams, San Francisco

Of course it might make more sense to replace Portland with the other of Calgary/Edmonton, as Portland is even smaller than Winnipeg. Even a second Toronto team could be on the table.

RE: A 40 team NFL
With the CFL and XFL dealing at the moment I don’t envision an NFL merge. However, I do like the NFL going to 40 teams. My scenario is taking 8 defunct NFL names/franchises and expanding with them, maybe even resurrecting their old records.
NFC
Canadian Tigers (Toronto is home but can play games across the country). Resurrected from the old Brooklyn Tigers. A historic Canadian and NFL team name.
St Louis All-Stars. A former franchise with the same city and name.
Memphis Triangles. Resurrected from the old Dayton Triangles. Also an old Memphis newspaper.
San Diego Marines. Resurrected from the old Minneapolis Marines. Home to US Naval station.
AFC
British Steam Rollers (London is home but can play games across the UK). Resurrected from the old Providence Steam Rollers.
Orlando Legion. Resurrected from the old Racine Legion.
San Antonio Tornadoes. Resurrected from the old Orange/Newark Tornadoes.
Mexican Bulldogs. (Mexico City is home but can play games across the country. Resurrected from the old Canton Bulldogs.

RE: A 40 team NFL
Although some of the geography of the NFL's present alignment is off (looking at you, Dallas), I'm going to keep the existing teams where they are and just add one new team to each division.

AFC
East: Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Toronto Ospreys
North: Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Kentucky Colonels, Pittsburgh Steelers
South: Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, San Antonio Scorpions, Tennessee Titans
West: Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, San Diego Destroyers

NFC
East: Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Norfolk Knights, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Warriors
North: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, St. Louis Stallions
South: Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, Oklahoma Oilers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
West: Arizona Cardinals, Los Angeles Rams, Portland Beavers, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks
