Despite the weak ending to this season, I think they ought to give Jai Steadman a shot, at least for one regular year. He knows the players we have, he seems to understand the school and the area, and if he's successful I believe he'd stay rather than try to leverage it into a position somewhere else.

Of course surprising everyone in Las Vegas would help his case a lot.

You're joking I assume, but it is the kind of mistake UTRGV/UTPA has made in the past. Remember Dan Hipsher?

UTRGV did interview Weir when he was an assistant at NMSU. Though I have heard he is probably headed back to Canada.

RE: UTRGV HC Opening
I think you need to keep Steadman in charge

Lew Hill was on to something and raising the bar for the program. His sudden passing and the current climate which may not be fully going away fully (as much as want it to) needs a steady hand at this time.

Give Steadman a year or two and see what happens. What do you have to lose? Presume the student athletes are wanting this

I would like to see who ends up applying. There's a lot of seniors this year which I doubt will want to stick around now. The AD is also different than the one that hired Hill. I would bet on Steadman getting passed over.

He was a strange hire. He hadn't done anything at previous stops.

I think RGV needs to start fresh. I don’t see this guy as being the leader they need.

OK, it was not a good game. But it looked to me (not a expert) like the biggest difference between the teams wasn't strategy, number of open looks, or even motivation and effort. It was that NMSU had amazing shooting even when closely guarded and we couldn't land any even when wide open. That's on the coach too, like everything else, but not something he can just correct on the fly.

UTRGV actually shot 40% from the field. That’s not terrible. But they only shot 2-16 from three and 17-28 on free throws. Throw in the domination by the Aggies on the boards and it was not a good night for the Vaqueros. I will not miss Levi.

RE: UTRGV HC Opening
UTRGVs interim coach will probably be interviewed but you gotta conduct a thorough coaching search. Hill helped elevate the Vaqueros profile over the last few years and it should help them get some solid candidates. This is the chance for UTRGV to take that next step with the right hire. Can’t miss the moment just to play it safe with the interim head coach.

Could conceivably see these names involved in the Lamar search? Ulric Maligi is definitely one that comes to mind for Lamar.

Obviously a tough situation at UTRGV as they look to hire a new head coach after the passing of Lew Hill. The three names that I’ve heard so far are SMU associate head coach K.T. Turner, Oklahoma assistant Pooh Williamson, and Texas Tech assistant Ulric Maligi.

On Monday, I mentioned the names that I’ve heard at UTRGV. I’ve now heard from multiple sources that a current SEC assistant did interview there earlier this week. More on this one as I hear it.

“ I’ve heard from multiple sources that the hot name right now at UTRGV is Austin Peay head coach Matt Figger. It sounds like he was on campus this week. More on this one as I hear it.”
