It is Burno
Fans now need to support the team and coach. It may take a while for the fans to come back to the Convo, however. Many have spent their entire lives supporting a team that was mediocre or less. Even if the team starts winning, it could take some time for the fans to return.

Hardcore fans will always show up, but recruiting exciting talent and winning will fill the convo.

RE: It is Burno
I want to welcome Coach Burno to NIU and wish him the best of luck.

That being said, why is Coach Burno's background any different than past P5 assistant coaches hired by NIU basketball that failed?

I recall when MM was hired, as well as Rob Judson, most fans were elated that we were getting these "great recruiters" at P5 schools who had no experience as a head coach. Anybody can recruit for Ilinois, MSU, or ASU, but when they get to NIU they all of sudden can not recruit. That is why I have always been in the camp of hiring successful head coaches at lower levels (D2,D3, JC, NAIA). Just look at Toledo hoops and their rise the past 5 years.

NIU has hired 4 assistants with no head coach experience in hoops in the past 35 years and only one has been successful (Jim Molinari).

Also, does anybody know his record at Marmion? Just curious. I don't think it was that great or it would be mentioned in his bio....I am glad he does have at least some high school head coaching experience.

Yeah, alums like Dog Fan are there through thick and thin. Major part is money. All we need is HAF to be above $10 million a year. Either big donors or 2000 more like Dog Fan

RE: It is Burno
Now let’s all hope that six years from now he’s the head coach at his alma mater, DePaul. That would mean he would have turned us around and positioned himself for a P5 gig. I chose DePaul because of the connection and locale to DeKalb. This is just an example, not a real wish.

Of course, would love for a coach to be really successful and stay above all.

Very few universities bother to detail someone's high school coaching records once they've moved up to the collegiate level. a) it's almost too long ago to matter; b) unless there's a direct local tie, nobody cares; c) what they've done at previous college stops has way more significance.

FYI per IHSA website:
2007-08: 12-14
2008-09: 13-14
2009-10: 17-10

Career: 42-38

Yeah, his record at Marmion means absolutely nothing.

It would be nice to be successful for 1 or 2 of the 3, maybe 4 years our coach is here before he heads for MVC, Big East or maybe even B10 gig, before we rebuild (aka lose) again. Maybe even leave for Illinois when Underwood heads to Duke or UNC. 05-stirthepot

RE: It is Burno
Watching the Introductory stream now and Coach Burno just mentioned that Bobby Simmons is on campus with him. Guessing that he may be on staff as an Assistant Coach and as a recruiter.

Maybe NIU will finally be a big player in the local Chicago/Chicagoland recruiting landscape.

Mentions Bobby Simmons and recruiting at the 21:55 mark.
Addresses my biggest question about playing style at the 25:31 mark.

Says it’ll be an exciting style of basketball (more up-and-down on Offense) and a pressing Defense (defend all 94ft). THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT! Screw that slow it down, snoozefest, Monty-Ball/Michigan State/Detroit Pistons crap. Give me that Chicago run-N-gun ENTERTAINING basketball.

This has never been/will never be a “Bad Boys” Detroit Pistons kind of place, we’re a Michael Jordan’s Bulls kind of place. That last hire was terribly tone deaf. Thanks, Jiff.

I’m excited for the future of NIU Basketball for the first time since the TJ Lux days.

Nice to have that DePaul connection with Holmes. Both Holmes and Bernstein were very quick to say that this (NIU) will be a short stop and is a stepping stone job for Burno. I'm pretty sure that Holmes will be able to get some good feedback from Burno as they have a previous relationship.

I don't know if this is true or not, so please feel free to educate/check me on this. But don't you have to "donate" to an AAU, if you want to pick up a kid from Chicago?

I don't know if we got the funds for that.

Yea I wonder what type of buyout STF had on this contract if someone else hires him away.

I respect that he hasn’t bailed on Arizona State and is finishing out the season. Those DePaul ties could come in handy as well. He played with Quentin Richardson, Bobby Simmons. Etc..,

This press conference and Hurley's words about Burno speak volumes about his hire.

I love a press. When I coached, I'd press all game if I could.

With that said, pressing in college is really hard because of the skill of the players and the size of the court. You REALLY have to have athletes who are in top condition.

Although, I'm not saying anything he doesn't already know but there is a reason you don't see college teams press a whole lot.

Doesn’t surprise me that he likes to Press. Assistant to Hurley who was a Duke guy. Press is in the genetics. He talked about creating opportunities for offense. That’s what the press does. Works well for teams that don’t have elite scorers. Points off turnovers.
