This has not been the problem. Who are the best players that are transferring out?

Jake Anderson who left NIU for Iowa State.

Abdel Nader who transferred and is now in the NBA. Marin Maric went to DePaul. Marshawn Wilson and Laytwan Porter leaving after their sophomore years.

We have trouble keeping our best players in the program. We need to keep players in the program and have them finish their careers at NIU.

Some stretches here, for sure.

Jake Anderson? Look man...when new coaches are hired, guys leave the program. It happens. Montgomery had just been hired and Iowa State poached Anderson from a team that had just gone 10-20 and only had one year of eligibility remaining who "led" the Huskies to 26 wins in 3 seasons.

Marin Maric? Maric graduated. He played 4 seasons at NIU and graduated and chose to go to DePaul for grad school. I will never fault a player for doing that.

Wilson and Porter? Please. Those two were in constant trouble, left the school and never played college basketball after that. The problem was bringing both of them into the program in the first place. Them leaving was a blessing.

So, this notion that Montgomery couldn't keep his good players in the program is a dude he didn't recruit who was on a team that won 26 games in 3 seasons, a guy who had already graduated from NIU and two guys who never even stepped on a college basketball court after they left.

Nice list.

Btw, the problem was never these guys leaving. The problem was having so many guys on the team leave who no one cared that they left in the first place.

Thank you Big Red. Montgomery’s MSU pedigree did not translate well to NIU. His claim to fame was finding Eugene German. He never recruited well. Might have worked out better if he did.

Agreed. Either way. We all need to give the Montgomery stuff a rest. This is Burno's team now. Granted, not much to talk about, but for some reason a thread about Burno has turned into a thread about Montgomery.

I admit, I participated, but I'm pulling out of it now. it's history and can be revisited at a later time or in another thread.

I'm happy about this hire and I'm optimistic it will be a good one. I'm also realistic that just because I think it's a good hire, it doesn't mean there are any guarantees. But I like the hire and think better years are ahead.

Athletics needs to get behind this new coach in order to enhance the game day experience. It would be awesome to have our own "Curtain of Distraction" but if there are no students, it's kind of pointless.

I brought up Jake Anderson because I was saying in general our program has had difficulty keeping its best players. It had nothing to do with Montgomery players.

Either way, the players I listed were all players better than most, if not all, the players on this current team.

I think we should care when good players leave. Otherwise all we are left with is a bunch of players who should not be starters on a D1 team.

I'd take Anderson, Nader, Maric, Porter, Wilson, and the others over what we have now.

But, I think you're going to have a hard time finding a sizable number of people here who would agree they'd like to have two trouble makers who quit basketball on the current team.

But, that's fine. I'm not going to argue with you on it.

We have identified 5 guys in 10 years, one who graduated, one who he didn't recruit and possibly never met, and two who quit basketball and that's evidence that he couldn't keep leaders on the team.

Sure...fine...whatever.

But it's not a problem that these are the leaders we're longing for....

Got it.

Why does it matter if a guy graduated? He still chose to leave when he could have stayed.

Why are you obsessed with it only being players under Montgomery?

My comment was not about Montgomery. It was a general comment about good players leaving our program. I was just listing recent players I could think of that were good.

Eugene German could be called a "trouble maker" but we kept him and didn't discard him.

We need to keep players if we want to succeed. We aren't a major program that's going to recruit great players. So we need to keep the players we do recruit. The MAC is a league where the best teams are led by veterans with juniors and seniors.

RE: It is Burno
I talked to Monty at the beginning of last year and asked him what a difference it made to have 3 seniors on the team that had been with the program for four years. James was a transfer but did sit out a year practicing so it was really four years in the program. He said it was a major factor. Unfortunately is was unusual in Montys tenure.

It is the norm these days to lose players each year but there were a few recruiting classes that really hurt Monty due to players leaving the program. His first year was a late start due to his hiring in the Spring although he did get Nader that year, but he left after two years.

His first big class came the next year with Akeem Springs, Mike Davis, Darrell Bowie, Trevon Baker, Sam Mader, Pete Rokavich and Petey Balls. Springs left for UWM after that year and ended up at Minnesota, Davis left after that year, Bowie left after his junior year for Iowa State, Sam Mader transferred after that year and Balls left after his sophomore year. Only Baker and Rakovich finished with the program. Baker was a good four year player.
Monty recovered the next year bringing in the Armstead brothers Highsmith, Anthony Johnson, Maric, Treloff and Orris. Highsmith and Orris transferred, and Maric was a grad transfer.

The 2015-16 recruiting class was Wilson, Porter, Key, Bradley, Pagua, Siu, and Zelis. Wilson, Porter, Key, Siu and Pagua all transferred out. Bradley was a four year player.

The other big class that failed to produce was 17-18. Thorpe was a good transfer pick up, but Daow, Marrio Brown, Demorgerantes, Henry Hayes, and Owen Hamilton either transferred or did not produce.

The lack of four year quality players in the program was the demise of Monty.
Hopefully Bruno has better success. That is the key to winng the MAC

Best analysis on MM recruiting so far on this thread, imo.

Couple comments/questions:
--- Like pantone1935, I also noted Burnos's comment in the 2016 story about how getting things done never happens quickly. So ...
--- Burno's "early success" will depend in part on who he can recruit to fill vacated positions (of course, in addition to coaching skill with returning guys).
--- Without just guessing who stays/leaves (since how do you/we know), how many positions are actually going to open up?
--- I forget, so do an old guy a favor ... what is the impact of Covid-19 on eligibility remaining?

From one old guy to another, all players on rosters this year get another year of eligibility. This is a free year. Fourth year seniors can get another year and will not count against the 13 scholarship player limit if they stay with their team. If any player transfers to another team it will count against the 13 player scholarship number of the team they transfer to.

Damn no stability. How could Monty keep track who was on the roster? Brutal.

Gotta give STF some props in letting MM go early rather than at end of season. Gave them a head start in the search.

The firings will begin next week for some of those left out of the “Dance”.

From what I can tell, Rob Murphy still is employed and that has to have EMU fans shaking their head.

It is a bit odd that we heard almost nothing about the candidates and then boom we had a coach selected. But our Athletic Department is so secretive about everything and not forthcoming.

Why do they consider him a monster hire?

Who wouldn’t want Arizona State’s fingerprints all over your program?

Can we expect a transfer in? ... from 247sports ... "Burno’s son, Micah, is a walk-on sophomore on ASU’s team. He played high school basketball at Scottsdale Chaparral High."

And the coaching carousel continues to spin ... from CBS Sports ... "On Friday, Central Connecticut announced five-year coach Donyell Marshall would be stepping down. The CCSU opening comes after Eastern Illinois, UAlbany, Denver and Binghamton all severed ties with their coaches earlier in the week. ... Industry sources tell CBS Sports that at least a dozen mid-major jobs should come open in the next two weeks. With small conference tournaments ongoing, there will be more movement over the weekend as well. ... the only change in a Major Seven conference was Wake Forest splitting with Danny Manning and hiring Steve Forbes."

NIU made its move just in time, imo. And ... the "Major Seven?" Hmmm.

I would like to see the new coach come in and create a team identity. Early on in Monty's tenure, NIU seemed to be a hard-nosed rebounding team which makes sense considering that MSU is built the same way, but they have gotten away from that in the last few years.

This looks like a good hire. I was high on Monty too. MSU was great pedigree. Midwest roots etc. We will see if coach or school
