A 3-POINT SUBJECT
This has confounded me all season until a friend gave me a possible answer: Why has James Jordan struggles so much shooting 3-pointers? He averaged better than 39-percent two straight seasons in junior college, and he shot a lot of them. Now he's at about 25-percent and has been all season.

My friend says left-handers can be your purest shooters, but when a left-hander loses his shot, it takes awhile for them to find it again, if ever. Has anyone else heard this?

A 39-percent 3-point shooter off the bench would be a big help for this team, now and into the future.

RE: A 3-POINT SUBJECT
Hmm, I've never heard that theory. I'd probably need to see some stats to support that to believe it. Some great lefties that come to mind are Harden, Manu, and Redd. I don't think of any of them as being streaky shooters.

With Jordan I think there are a couple factors. First, his role is significantly different here than it was in juco. In his two juco seasons 38% then 57% of his attempts came from three. In both seasons his two point percentages were well over 50%. This year a whooping 76% of his shots have come from three. He's only attempted 17 shots inside the arc and is only shooting 41% on them. It could simply be that he's like many scorers, needs to see one go in before he starts to heat up. That type of player will not succeed as a low volume three point specialist.

Second, he seems a little lost out there on offense. Seldom gets a look in the flow of the offense. Often standing in the corner off the ball waiting. To me he seems like the role he would be successful in is the Jamal Crawford type short stint, high usage, bench scorer. Which is simply a role we don't need because two of our best players are PGs so we always have one of them running the offense. Because of this we're trying to make him a three point specialist which isn't his game. He doesn't get into a rhythm.

Finally, he's probably pressing. He probably wants more minutes and more shots and when you're only getting 3.5 shots a game every shot has added pressure because you don't know if you'll get another.

Struggling from three hasn't been límited to him. Every role player has been bad from three. Gio and Beck are the only guys on the team (excluding injured Nuga) who are averaging more than 1 point on their three point attempts... which is crazy bad.

Here's hoping his first shot goes down in Cleveland and it gets him going. Because like you said, we could really use him knocking down shots.

Juco defense is nonexistent so a lot easier to shoot when not contested and yea when get 3.5 shots a game hard to get in flow.

Speaking of bench scoring... Our 6'7" HS recruit just had a 26 point game off the bench on 7-10 shooting including 4 made threes. He's coming off the bench because he missed the start of the season with an injury. I'm really excited to see him next year. Seems like a very talented and versatile player.

“You play up on him and he goes around you to the basket. You give him some space and he’s going to hit the jumper. He’s a great player.” That's exactly what defenders said about Trevor Huffman. A nightmare for a defender.

I'd put a little more "whoa" on that comparison based on one story and one game comeback from injury. From what I've read this Hillcrest team is loaded and Rollins is among Top 3 players (1 going FB in B10) ...

HOWEVER ... school system has limited games to conference only for Covid and according to reports the conference is subpar ... so no non-con games against the much better outside comp this team usually plays. So while I love the shooting percentage ... be careful just the same.

In the end, a true scoring 6-6 perimeter player will be something Kent hasn't had in quite awhile (other than Mitch??). Yet the story says nothing about ball handling or passing ability, so again ... whoa for now. But there is definitely hope. ... And if he's ONLY as good as Mitch, personally, I'd take it.

Oh, I'm not comparing him to Huffman. It's just that that is exactly what was said about Huffman. I remember now who said it - it was Juby Johnson of Miami after KSU beat them for the 2001 MAC championship.

You guys crack me up. I highly doubt this 6'6"-6'7" HS forward recruit is going to end up reminding anyone of Huffman or Peterson. Also, Mitch Peterson a "scoring 6-6 perimeter player"? You may have missed every game after his first college game.

No, Mitch was not a 'scoring 6-6 perimeter player' (as he was recruited to be), but he was a solid 6-7 man on some very good teams with his other various skills being key to winning a lot of games.

To have a 6-6 wing like that is hard to find on the MAC level ... if he can score or not. There's only one or two of any consequence in the league I can think of (Plowden, Littleson). The 6-6 Akron transfer from Beachwood gets a lot of time but overall production is minimal. Can you think of any others???

RE: A 3-POINT SUBJECT
If we're talking specifically wings over 6'5", the last two years we had CJ Williamson. Before him the first that comes to mind is Chris Evans. Beck is essentially our starting SF so maybe he counts. He does a lot of his damage around the hoop though. Usually 6'6"+ becomes 4's in the MAC even if they have perimeter skills. Which certainly could happen with Rollins. Chris Ortiz comes to mind there.

Re-read my comment. I never said he would remind us of anyone, let alone Huffman. I was merely pointing out that that quotation was almost word for word what a good player defending Huffman in 2001 said about him.

Right. Got that now. Didn't see your second comment when I made my last post.
