How do you equate qualified with nepotism? Ability has nothing to do with it,

Most broad job requirements can be waived with some stated procedures. My guess that is what happened.

Calling a "Nepotism foul" on MT hiring Brent Stockstill is about as newsworthy as Channel 5 reporting on whether Nashville has a few folks who don't play a little music. At this point who on God's Earth cares? It is just another hit piece by a dude that thrives on "GOTCHA!" Phil Williams did the same thing with "sourpuss" Tony Franklin, when he was bad mouthing Big Stock about Covid Masks. And, Yes, Phil is an Honors Grad of Middle Tennessee. 03-shhhh

sounds to me like this investigation is being driven by powers looking to trigger a firing for cause.

It worked in Knoxville.

RE: MTSU coach violates school's nepotism policy as son hired for job
The person that needs to be held accountable is athletic director Chris Massaro. Do you have a loophole 'process' around nepotism hiring prohibition or not? He said MT has a process and it was followed, but MT policy and state law say otherwise? Somebody is lying or truly stupid here.

The athletic director said that, to avoid running afoul of the state’s nepotism law, he was the one who technically decided to hire Brent Stockstill. "He was by far and away the best candidate of the Zoom interviews that I watched," Massaro said.

"Are we hiring him because his last name is Stockstill? My answer to that is no. Then if you don't hire him is it because his last name is Stockstill?"

What about the state law? "There's a process that we can go through at the university to get that approved, and we did that," Massaro added.

But Middle Tennessee State’s nepotism policy is also clear: “No employee shall participate in the process of review, recommendation, and/or decision making in any matter concerning hiring ... of a relative.”

RE: MTSU coach violates school's nepotism policy as son hired for job
A football coach has to have input on who is going to be on his staff. IF a relative applies and is qualified, the head coach at some point is going to have to say he is ok with that hire or not ok with it. If he affirms the hire he has technically committed nepotism by those standards.

This isn't like a Math professor sitting on the hiring board and getting his wife in as an English professor. There would be no logical reason for him to be on that committee and no other reason for him to have input on the English dept. Not the same with a football staff.

I would imagine that the waiver of the nepotism statute revolves around that point. A qualified candidate and a job where there absolutely has to be input from his/her relative currently on staff.

The problem with public universities is that there are just too many rules and regulations that must be followed.
