RE: Illini
I always find these negative UI threads to be funny. I mean, is it not the duty and responsibility of the UI administration to make decisions to maximize and protect their own best interests? The UI and NIU have always have had separate governing boards and each should make decisions based solely of what is best for them. Why would someone even expect the UI to make decisions which would be in the interest of NIU?

Of course U of I is free to work on its own behalf, and unfortunately many times that means walking a fine moral line in directly trying to keep NIU et al down. It's for that very reason though that we should make efforts to push U of I down (as they do us) and ourselves forward, and not get giddy over their sporadic athletic success etc.. Not sure how it works in other states, but U of I has let it be know that they will gladly hinder the other state universities if it furthers their own interests. We need to be equally as selfish.

Iowa actually schedules us in football, University of Kentucky didn't greedily try to block us from acquiring a college of law - you're better off randomly rooting for those non-adversarial schools 03-wink

Not at all sure why Kentucky could care any less about our getting a college of law, but, if that is your argument, okay. And we have played Illinois in football.....I saw it with my own eyes.

There was obviously some sarcasm in there. There are 129 other FBS schools, U of I is the only one that tried to block our law school and Engineering PHD's, yet ironically thats your 2nd favorite college sports team?

Root for who you want of course, but another university that openly tries to devalue your very own diploma does not seem like a logical choice. Cheers.

UI has in no way devalued my degree and, by the way, we have played Illinois four times in football......we have NEVER played Kentucky. Maybe your anger is misplaced.

I get it when people say NIU is not a direct competitor to the Illness, but the history is fully there of them attempting to engineer all the other state schools and keep with one dominate state school. Honestly I would be more pissed if I was an ISU grad. Illinois has the population to support two quality schools, just like Iowa, Michigan, Indiana but the Illness have always squashed it whenever they have the chance. Besides the tuition being so high, why do you think so many Illinois HS students go out of state to college. I believe the ratio is greater than 50% now. Also they have played the other Public Div 1 football 3 times since 1969, which is pretty lame. Done with rant and I will cheer against the Illness until my last dying breath.

The State screwed the rest of the schools in Illinois when they made Illinois hard to get into, accepted just about any foreign student at UI. That led may kids out of state since the disparity between UI and anyone was huge. I mean I was accepted to Purdue engineering based on Math but UI didn't even give a second glance in late 80's. The exodus in turn making schools like NIU accept a lower tier of students which they were already. NIU/DeKalb finished the job when academics continued to fall, kids got good deals out of state at big name schools...as cheap as Illinois and additionally became vacation spots for parents as well as kids. I mean 100's of kids from this area go to AL alone. Years ago, kids went to maybe WMU, Iowa, Purdue and that was in.

And the icing on the cake was DeKalb around the campus turning into crap.
They have largest Chinese student population. This , in part, is because school needs out of state tuition and China happy to suck intellectual info from Illinois

Sponsored by corporations/politicians, pay full tuition, raise scores for US kids,

+100

U of Illiness has walked all over NIU so many times in concrete ways over the last few decades. Blows my mind when NIU fans get warm and fuzzy for a sec when U of I has some temporary athletic success. I know they work hard to keep PHD level diplomas from coming out of NIU Accounting and Engineering programs even though the quality of the programs greatly dictate otherwise. God forbid our diplomas and theirs have the same value.

Doubt the Illini board lit up with local love when we went to the Orange Bowl.

U of I works to hold NIU down more than any of the other 128 FBS level schools, yet some of our alumni randomly hold onto some local love for them because the Sun Times tries to make it fashionable? F*ck U of I.

#5 engineering school in the country. They are competing against Cal, MIT, Michigan for recognition. They could care less about NIU. The issue isn't their success and education, it's the way the State allowed them, actually promoted them, as international campus while NIU and rest of state turned to crap for education. And NIU itself and DeKalb had a part in it too.

Corporate America's investment in UI for internship and research is monumental. They have a whole research campus of building for Abbott, BP, Cargill, CAT and dozens more south of the football field. They have gotten as much in donations/investments from a handful of companies, donors as NIU has in endowment fund. That's because they get return. They get students they want. My niece was told she has a job upon graduating with tenure do to a paying internship, and was told that in her 2nd year.

But the gap the state allowed to happened between UI and everyone else is a travesty. And I don't blame UI for being successful one bit. But to have the ACT avg. from your #1 to #2 school State school go from 29 to 24 (UIC and shockingly SIU....with ISU, SIU 23....NIU 22....WIU 21...EIU 20) is pathetic. There is no good #2 option for someone missing out on UI, as many (and no, not all) on this board did. That's why kids leave. That on top of parents vacation spots they want to go to lol.

RE: Illini
Sports are about competition and so is our Capitalistic society. So, while we generalize about Institutions like U of I. It is understandable why some cheer and some cannot cheer for an institution like U of I based on their perspective. While some can cheer for their success, maybe they find some identity from being from Illinois and U of I as the flagship state school, some admiration or association by friends/family who attend or maybe they just like this current team. Others cannot cheer for an institution that to them embodies corruption, inequity and arrogance. The effort to build up U of I's prestige has been orchestrated over years with dominance over limited resources and partnerships with corporations that has fed them human capital without too much individual risk as the state taxes overly went to their institution instead of being more equitably being spread over many institutions so that more students could have benefited. These institutions are so big though that we shouldn't generalize and we should keep our competitive spirits in check.

RE: Illini
I mean the Illini do not even need to hide their corruption anymore, they can always claim misunderstanding. ISU looks like they learned from the playbook and has been steadily gaining in this dog eat dog world.

COVID-19 vaccines given to hundreds of University of Illinois employees who weren’t yet eligible, including coaches and instructors

"Stuart, a former Southern Illinois University professor, said Thursday that higher education instructors providing in-person instruction at other institutions still cannot access the vaccine.
“The faculty and staff of UI are no more valuable or essential than their counterparts at SIU, EIU, our community colleges, or any other institution of higher education,” she said in a statement. “The lack of consistency is, frankly, maddening. It smacks of elitism and favoritism when the faculty and staff of one institution is given priority access, especially while there are individuals who have been 1B eligible due to age who have been trying, to no avail, since the beginning of the phase to get even their first dose.”
U. of I. was not the only school to misunderstand the vaccination plan.
A spokesman for Illinois State University said Friday that 70 in-person instructors were mistakenly scheduled for on campus vaccinations Jan. 29. “It was early on, an honest mistake,” spokesman Eric Jome said."

Maybe if NIU had a better basketball team preparing for an NCAA tournament they would make the same "honest mistake." 05-duck
