ACC: Clemson, Duke, Maryland, NC State, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest

Big 9: Colorado, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State

Big North: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Purdue, Wisconsin

Great East: Boston College, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, West Virginia

Pac-9: Boise State, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Washington, Washington State

SEC: Alabama, Auburn, Central Florida, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami-FL, South Florida

South Central: Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Memphis, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Vanderbilt

SWC: Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Houston, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Utah

I didn't break up any states, and I got the Big 8 and the original ACC 8 back together.

A dream scenario for old ACC members...geographically compact with long-term rivals. Kudos for having Ohio State and Michigan in different groupings...it makes the divisions more balanced. Nicely done.

Nine team conferences would encourage OOC games to be played every week. Michigan-Ohio State, Texas-Oklahoma, Clemson-Georgia Tech, Alabama-Tennessee, etc.

Anyone can draw up their dream conferences on paper. The problem is it will never happen. I like one, someone else likes another. It really doesn’t matter.

Only lottery ticket odds of something like this happening is a complete break away league with 1 full tv deal like the NFL has. Short of that it will never happen, ergo it will never happen. However these realignment scenarios are always fun for offseason filler content.

RE: 9 Team Conferences
I like the conference realignment stuff because it's fascinating and there's a ton of schools that don't belong where they are and you can make groups of teams that actually belong together. I know there are a lot of people who feel the same way, and one thing we all have in common is that our brains crave order and dislike chaos.

Plugging teams into symmetrical boxes creates order on a spreadsheet. But it isn't realistic because everyone acts from self-interest.

It works for PRO LEAGUES -- MLB should add two teams and go to four 8-team LEAGUES: Pacific with all 8 teams in MTZ/PTZ; Southern with TB, MIA, ATL, WASH, TEX, HOU, KC and Nashville), American (8 current teams left) and National (current 7 teams left plus Montreal). That makes sense because you have one league in charge of that. Not true in College.

You'll never get EVERYONE to have 9 teams because no one ever all had 12 at the same time. They've always been ragged.

Every school and conference is going to act out of self-interest.

RE: 9 Team Conferences
I started this thread because I truly believe that 9 team conferences are best for many reasons. But because of TV and big money, big conferences rule the day. It’s doubtful we will ever see this trend change. Many of you have proposed some great 9 team conferences. Thank you.

I would love this MLB setup! I would go with Montreal and Mexico City/San Antonio/or Las Vegas.

WEST
Pacific Division: LA Dodgers, LA Angels, San Diego, Arizona
Northwest Division: San Francisco, Oakland, Seattle, Colorado

SOUTH
Southeast Division: Miami, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Washington
Southwest Division: Kansas City, Texas, Houston, *Mexico City

AMERICAN
Atlantic Division: Boston, NY Yankees, Toronto, Baltimore
Great Lakes Division: Chicago White Sox, Cleveland, Detroit, Minnesota

NATIONAL
Northeast Division: NY Mets, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, *Montreal
Midwest Division: Chicago Cubs, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Milwaukee

RE: 9 Team Conferences
I like the 9 team idea. It would really help if you went
COLONIAL(GIVE COLONIAL FOOTBALL TO A10 AGAIN AND MOVE BASKETBALL SCHOOLS TO MORE BASKETBALL REGIONAL CONFERENCES)
Marshall
James Madison
Liberty
Old Dominion
Appalachian State
Charlotte
Coastal Carolina
Georgia State
Georgia Southern
SUN BELT
Western Kentucky
Middle Tennessee
UAB
Troy
South Alabama
Southern Miss
Louisiana Tech
Florida Atlantic
Florida International
CONFERENCE USA
Louisiana
Louisiana Monroe
Arkansas State
Rice
UTSA
UTEP
North Texas
Texas State
New Mexico State
*Less money to split, better rivalries, more room to grow, and more geographically friendly and cheaper to run. By giving football back to a10,which will be best fcs conference. No automatic bid will be missed. CUSA and sun belt need to do something. 8 game football. 16 home and home games in basketball. Louisiana Tech does not have to complain about other Louisiana schools. All parties can agree to waive fees. Thoughts?

RE: 9 Team Conferences
I've done it, I've finally solved this puzzle!

South East - Florida, FSU, Miami, UCF, USF, Georgia, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Clemson
Mid Atlantic - NC State, UNC, Indiana, Louisville, Kentucky, Tennessee, Cincinnati, Virginia, Virginia Tech
North East - Boston College, Penn State, Pitt, Syracuse, Maryland, West Virginia, Notre Dame, Navy, Army
Great Lakes - Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois, Purdue, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota
Great Plains - Nebraska, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Colorado, Missouri, Air Force
Mid South - LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Houston, Memphis, Arkansas, Alabama, Auburn
South West - Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, SMU, Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, BYU
Pacific - Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Ucal, UCLA, USC, Washington, Washington State, San Diego State

Every conference has at least one "blue blood" or tent pole if you will. The only one that really resulted in "getting the band back together" was the Great Plains being the old Big 8 + Air Force. Conference are geographically & culturally similar. I also managed to keep programs that left one conference because of a member or members away from those programs. IE Texas A&M is not in a conference with Texas.

This looks good, but realistically the Big 10, the ACC, and the SEC will never relinquish their dollars. So it is just an exercise in frustration.

Ironically the 3 conferences with members left out (Rutgers, WF, Duke, Vandy)
This would only work in a breakaway league scenario with a 1 league tv deal similar to pro sports.
