RE: 9 Team Conferences
After thinking about it and realizing that it would be difficult to have 9 team regional conferences without leaving out some key teams. I agree that MidnightWhiskey's 10 team per conference lineup is preferable.

South East - UCF, FSU, Miami, Florida, usf, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Auburn, South Carolina
Mid Atlantic - NC State, UNC, Wake Forest, Duke, Clemson, Louisville, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech
North East - Boston College, Penn State, Pittsburg, Syracuse, Rutgers, Maryland, West Virginia, Army, Navy, Temple
Great Lakes - Cincinnati, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Wisconsin
Great Plains - Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Air Force, Colorado State
Mid South - LSU, Mississippi State, Mississippi, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Houston, Memphis, Missouri, Arkansas, Tulane
South West - Baylor, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Utah, BYU, SMU
Pacific - Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Ucal, UCLA, USC, Washington, Washington State, San Diego State, Boise State

Personally, I would put Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Air Force in the South West and Colorado, Utah, and BYU elsewhere.

But realistically none of this matters because it will never happen.

RE: 9 Team Conferences
Going back to my idea of 1980

Metro: Take the 1980 lineup and add South Carolina and Miami.

Cincinnati
Louisville
Virginia Tech
Memphis
Tulane
South Carolina
Florida State
Miami (no basketball until 1985)

Other Southern Independent teams at the time that remained 1-A:

ECU, S. Miss, and Louisiana.

But then you'd have an 11-team Big North and a 7-team Great East. How do you account for that?

Also, Texas already has 6 schools in the "P8" here. They don't need any more. And unlike SMU, Utah is already in the power club. However, I might be amenable to trading Baylor for SMU.

I suggested 10 team conferences previously.

This looks like a step back in time, regional conferences. It almost looks like the 1960's - 1970's, before TV ruined it. I like it. 9 conferences, 10 bowl spots, 1 bowl day instead of a month of dates based on TV. Rivalries intact. Includes most but not all of the AAC and MWC teams. Well done.

True, MidnightWhiskey's new alignment has 10 team conferences instead of 9 team conferences.

To get to 9 team conferences from the above 10 team setup I did the other day you could make some adjustments to get the below. Current P5's that miss out are: Wake Forest, Duke, Vanderbilt & Rutgers. I also removed Temple, Tulane, Colorado State & Boise.

South East - UCF, FSU, Miami, Florida, usf, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Auburn

Mid Atlantic - NC State, UNC, Clemson, Louisville, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech, South Carolina

North East - Boston College, Penn State, Pitt, Syracuse, Maryland, West Virginia, Army, Navy, Notre Dame

Great Lakes - Ohio State, Cincinnati, Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Illinois, Purdue, Northwestern, Wisconsin

Great Plains - Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Air Force

Mid South - LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Houston, Memphis, Missouri, Arkansas, Baylor

South West - TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Utah, BYU, SMU

Pacific - Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Ucal, UCLA, USC, Washington, Washington State, San Diego State

Full round robin schedule with 4 OOC games.

Congrats Arkansas, Kentucky, LSU, Tennessee, Miss St, and Ole Miss; instead of playing Alabama and Auburn, you get to play Louisville and Memphis now!

Congrats Bama and Auburn; instead of playing LSU and Tennessee, you get to play the directional Florida schools that used to be in CUSA now!

Fun fact: Georgia Tech & Tulane have a combined 8 SEC football titles. That's more than Ole Miss & Miss St combined. Also Arkansas, Missouri, South Carolina, Texas A&M & Vanderbilt who have never won the SEC.

It's perhaps less balanced competitively, but here's an alternate arrangement where the Alabama schools are not placed with the Florida and Georgia schools. In exchange, the South Carolina schools move to the SEC, the Kentucky schools move to the ACC, and UMD trades places with WVU to make the map of states look less crappy.

I like this alignment pretty well. When going up to 72, the additional 7 non-power schools that people add seem to unanimously include Central Florida, Cincinnati, Houston, Memphis, and South Florida. The final 2 have the most disagreement. I would have BYU and Temple but this has Boise St and Temple. I've seen some alignments with San Diego St or SMU instead. There are others.

In your alignment, the only change I'd consider is switching Notre Dame with Ohio St. This places Ohio St with its historical rivals and Notre Dame into an East Coast group which they seem to prefer.

South Central: Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Memphis, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Vanderbilt

SWC: Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Houston, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Utah

I didn't break up any states, and I got the Big 8 and the original ACC 8 back together.

ACC: Duke, Kentucky, Louisville, NC State, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, West Virginia

Big 9: Colorado, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State

Big North: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Purdue, Wisconsin

Great East: Boston College, Cincinnati, Maryland, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple

Pac-9: Boise State, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Washington, Washington State

SEC: Central Florida, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami-FL, South Carolina, South Florida

South Central: Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, LSU, Memphis, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Vanderbilt

SWC: Arizona, Arizona State, Baylor, Houston, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Utah

In a 9 team conference hypothetical world you can't remove Ohio St and Alabama out of their home conferences.

Then call the South Central the SEC and call Florida's conference the Florida Conference or Sunshine Conference or something with a Florida theme.
