Just for sports. You can be a serious academic school and have fun with your sports programs. We do it now, we just don't do a good job.
Agreed

Our sports marketing is rough.

It really is. “Hawk yeah”? I’m not that out of touch with the younger generation to know that is one of the corniest things I’ve ever heard. We practically branded every social media post with it for years. No one questioned that?

Top 3 off the top of my head

Merchandising had always been a problem, I dont know why

Visual Business support of the school is minimal, see Greenville for how it should be done

We don't take advantage of the "perk" of our Flo contract

My experience is that these things always can be traced to the top. Whether through commission or omission, the Chancellors de jour over the decades have let or caused half-a$$ed branding efforts to run things.

Very few really understand the incredible financial and student impact a successful sports marketing program can have on a university. It's an afterthought, and it's left up to university employees instead of hiring a marketing firm.

RE: Looking to next year: Hoops
Merchandising has been pretty bad, but thankfully, it seems to be trending up. Stopped by the bookstore this weekend and they had a better selection of Adidas (and Nike + UA) stuff than the past, including (an accurate version) of the current navy baseball jersey.

At the baseball game today, I overheard a student talking with one of the marketing guys about the specific trucker hat they were giving away for a trivia game because it was otherwise unavailable. That shouldn't be happening for a school of our size with our success in sports. Plus, we have an awesome, unique color scheme and a clean, recognizable logo. Put it on every Adidas product we can get our hands on.

The marketing stuff isn't just for fans, either. These days, Instagram clips, Twitter graphics, photo galleries and every piece of media matters to landing the the recruits our programs need.

Given our resource challenges, I understand the difficulty, but I'd love to see us improve that sort of thing. I'm doing the best I can to grow the Perch with our media offerings, but there's only so far you can go from the outside.

The bottom line is this: we have a fast-growing school with great academics (I don't think I'd get in these days), a beautiful campus that has exploded with development, located in a place that people spend the winter dreaming of either their previous or next vacation at. We've got a great food and beer scene, and Wilmington has an incredible amount of history. There's the glamour of retirees and beach houses and film, but there's also the gritty side of fishing and the port.

When I think about our two most visible athletic programs in baseball and basketball, I think about a lot of those same things. We've got tradition and we've had success, but we're also expecting a ton of growth. Maybe this is the year baseball wins a regional and maybe basketball is back on top of the CAA soon.

Basketball is going to play fast and fun, but they're also going to be tough on the press and have kids with something to prove -- transfers and guys told they were just a little too small for the ACC.

Baseball wins with homegrown talent all the time and I can't count how many late-game rallies and improbable comebacks I've seen. Coach Scalf and Coach Hood built a Top 40 program nationally with resources that certainly don't match up with that.

There's a lot to market there, and I feel like we could really do a better job of telling the story of who we are, who we've been and who we want to be moving forward.

Great stuff and agree 100%. We're on the cusp of leaping into a top level school on every front. And with our student growth, the increase in student athletic fees alone will have a huge impact. We've just got to capitalize on everything, and be in a posiition to take our seat at the table of top level schools, and that has to include marketing.

Don't forget soccer as well. UNCW has a long term vision in athletics to put forth nationally ranked and recognized teams in baseball, basketball and soccer. Those are the three legs of our athletic stool. Women's soccer, volleyball(beach and indoor)and basketball have the same potential,

With the position you are creating, you may be in a position to create a "brand" that could be marketed to Seahawk fans. Greenville is loaded with "off brand" stores that sell purple and gold gear that doesn't require licensing. I've always that "Sammies" would work for a clothing based name brand, using UNCW colors and creating that "look" I was talking about like a Panama Jack or Margaritaville. Board shorts, t-shirts, flip flops, hats. It's just waiting for an entrepenuer to grab it.

Our beach front stores should be loaded with the type of Seahawk merchandise you mentioned.

We started out as Wilmington College. We should be Wilmington University period. I don't care how many Wilmington Universities there are.

By the way Dan, congrats to Drexel and good luck at the "big dance".
I'll have to check & see if Drexel's tourny win came on SIB Day! Many present-day members on this board have no memory of SIB Day.

I definitely remember. Makes me realize I do miss the Hecklers. The torch has been dropped.

Guessing before my time since I am unsure what SIB day is. Also if you have us winning, I have a bridge to sell you here in the midwest. We need a little more than luck with our draw. Will be fun though for the experience.
