When we talk about mid-majors getting screwed, we’re not talking about programs like Gonzaga. They’re part of the fabric of major college basketball, a level we can only dream of reaching. We only have 2 things in common with Gonzaga: We’re a basketball first school, and we’re in a bad conference we’d escape if/when we can.

UNCW facesa long term problem of being a "hyphen" school under UNC. We can't develop any more than a small regional brand and fan base with our name. I'd like to see UNCW explore another name.

Now that’s an intriguing idea. Maybe go the route Charlotte did and just call ourselves “Wilmington”? But then of course people would think Delaware.

Would you be in favor of us leaving the UNC system? I’ve always wondered what the pros and cons of being affiliated with the system were. The powers that be there certainly don’t seem interested in seeing us grow into a research powerhouse.

Mount St. Mary is promoting the term The Mount. I think we should be branding the phrase The Dub as our means of separation and recognition.

UNCW has always done an awful job of branding. There are plenty of hyphen schools who have lost their hyphens (UCLA, UNLV, IUPUI, others). But UNCW cant even be consistent in how it refers to itself. So good luck in getting others to use your alleged name when you yourself persist in using the monikers you claim to want to shed.

I don't think we can leave the system. But I also don't think that's a problem. Just like you have an Appalachian State or a Western Carolina or East Carolina, i'd like to see us adopt a name that is associated with the coast/ocean/etc.

The name that is available and has always intrigued my is Oceanic University. We could keep our Seahawk mascot. And the name would allow casual fans to adopt us across the country without it being attached to a state or region. Atlantic Coastal or Coastal Atlantic as well. Also the chains that have prevented us from becoming a doctoral/research university have been broken. Or, go full bore Wilmington University and who cares about Delaware? We're the "greater" Wilmington. The problem with the UNC - W, is we have to explain the W anyhow, so we can't just go full UNCW. Thus, the continual battle of UNCW/UNC Wilmington. It's a lose/lose for us.

It doesn't mean crap what name we use if we don't develop a consistent winning program. Back in the Wainwright/Brownell days, I could wear my gear in many places across the country. And I would have people approach me and say how much they liked us and that they pulled for us.

We can do both. Having a brand in place that can capitalize on success when it comes may help us retain players and coaches. A name is the starting point. We have a very unique coastal identity and we really don't capitalize on it. We should have courts and fields that "feel" coastal. Our uniforms and attendants at games should look coastal. Our food service areas should have a coastal feel and menu. When you come to a game or see us on TV, we should stand out and give people a reason to want to be associated with our brand. Our fan gear should be beachy and coastal, but we do none of that. We should have a "Margaritaville" style to everything we do. That could attract fans from all over.

When you have a certain "style" and atmosphere, fans will come to games and support you, win or lose. I went to a Durham Bulls game, and it was the atmosphere I went for. I wasn't a fan, didn't care if they won, but still has a great time. That's what we are missing. There are so many colleges in North Carolina, it's hard to build a fan base unless you're UNC or State. EZU has done a pretty good job, but even they struggle.

ECU has done a great job of branding with the Pirate theme.

In regards to a name change us for us I’ve always preferred just Wilmington. I don’t like the UNC name association. Charlotte and Asheville have gone that route. Wilmington is a growing city and it’s only a matter of time before people associate Wilmington with Wilmington,NC not Wilmington, DE

What if we were the Oceanic Otters.....?

Touche'...

But I am starting to lean towards just Wilmington University if we don't do anything else. And I seriously do think UNCW could have an entire "brand" that takes on a "Margaritaville" vibe. Right now, all we are doing is taking the exact same stuff every other university has and stamping our logo or name on it. It isn't original, it isn't unique, and it does nothing to build our brand. And it's such a simple brand to build.

I think a big reason they don’t do this is that, historically, UNCW wanted to move away from being thought of as a “party school” and be taken seriously academically.

But I don’t think you’d have to sacrifice that image with some fun re-branding.

UNCW or Wilmington College...marketing isn't my thing so either is fine with me. I agree that we should agree as a university who we are and brad that whatever 'that' is.

Is a Margaritaville vibe selling the university to HS seniors or their grandparents?

There are 13 cities named Wilmington in the US. There is a Wilmington University in New Castle Delaware. And there is already a Wilmington College, or College of Wilmington, right here in the Dub.

Not really the whole "margarita" drinking idea, just the clothing we sell to fans, the uniforms we wear, the "vibe" you get walking into our fields and the concession stands.

Do you know how easy it is to create the whole brand? Put up some tiki hut looking stuff at the concession stands. Play some music that has an island vibe. Have your attendants put on hawaiian style shirts. Put something on the indoor courts and fields that portays a "beach" image. Sell fan gear like sandals, shorts, shirts that have an island vibe and give it a UNCW brand like calling them "Sammies".

When UNCW fans show up, everyone should know we're in the house by the clothes and style we are wearing. We should bring the beach with us everywhere we go. And when anyone visits UNCW, they should walk away wanting to come back to experience that "vibe" that is unique to UNCW.

Our current campaign is "UNCW: Like No Other". Ain't it the truth.

Luetze has been been the only one who has been able to give UNCW any sense of identity. It's been a constant struggle. I still see the old logo being used in certain places

I just recall when I was a student, and in the years after, being told a few times UNCW had no interest in marketing themselves as the fun beach school. And with the push to become a research powerhouse, it still probably doesn't mesh easily with each subsequent administration.

I'd like to see some fun re-branding but I just don't see it happening any time soon. The "new logo" was the last big initiative and that probably pushed the clock back on our next effort. Maybe the next administration?

Just for sports. You can be a serious academic school and have fun with your sports programs. We do it now, we just don't do a good job.
