Naming the Basketball Floor
I was watching the UNC game today and noted that the basketball floor at the Dean Smith Center is named after Roy Williams. Duke has named their floor after Coach K and Richmond's floor is named the Dick Tarrant Court. I know this was a special weekend at ODU remembering Sonny Allen. I think another great way to honor the best basketball coach Old Dominion has ever had (and the man that built our program) would be to name our floor the Sonny Allen Court.

In attempt to not sound insensitive, but court naming rights will come at a price. Regardless of the "name" there will be $$$ behind it.

Yeah let's get VCU Medical for the naming.

RE: Naming the Basketball Floor
I do not think everything involves money. If that was the case, the University would have sold the naming rights to the basketball court many years ago. There are many examples at ODU where individuals' names are on buildings.
Three of these are Webb University Center, Jim Jarrett Athletic Administration Building, and Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. I doubt money was paid to Old Dominion so that it would honor these great leaders of our past.

Most of those facilities were named prior to the time when selling the name of every building was important to the bottom line.

Well yeah, but one of those is a student center, the other an admin building, and the third a baseball stadium. With the first two, there's no TV or announcers that will be going up nationwide that could be advertised to, so there's no real point in paying for that. A lot of those buildings get named for prestige and is kind of in its own ecosystem different from the sports ones.

For the baseball stadium, ODU while having a good team doesn't have an uber nationally recognized team so I'm not sure how much someone would want to pay for their name on that. But, if the money was there I'm sure the University would change the name of that stadium in a heartbeat. There's a reason why Foreman Field is now Kornblau Field and the Ted is now Chartway Arena, even though their old names were well liked and known throughout the region.

Xemple’s court is not “named” but it has both of their Hall of Fame coaches honored at center court.

I look forward to, hopefully in the coming years, the return of Blaine Taylor to ODU. He made his mistakes, no doubt, but was the architect of the best years of ODU basketball I have witnessed. I'd like to shake his hand again and recall some great times earlier this century.

Liacouras is a renaming itself. It was originally the The Apollo at Temple.

I always liked BT and was hoping he could beat the demons. But no to naming a floor after him.

We had former coaches that have won National Championships, but I say let's sell it. Money is tight.

I bet we could crowdsource enough to put an F in front of that.

If you look closely or zoom in you can see Harry Litwack & John Chaney’s name around the center court logo.

There is only one option for naming the court. Cameron "Wood" Selig Court. Respect the greatness.

Correct. I hear Mike77 and I believe it would be a great gesture, if available. But I am telling you, with 100% certainty, that the naming rights to the ODU floor will come with a price. With the current state of college athletics, and with ODU trying to establish/maintain/etc. their status, I personally agree, but I completely get the sentiment from those who don't.
