POWER FOWARD
1.Kenny Gattison
2.Chris Gatling
3.Alex Loughton
SMALL FORWARD
1.Ronnie Valentine
2.Petey Sessoms
3.Cal Bowdler
CENTER
1.Mark West
2.Wilson Washington
3.Odell Hodge
POINT GUARD
1.Dave Twardzik
2.Ahmad Caver
3.Trey Freeman
SHOOTING GUARD
1.Kent Bazemore
2.Mark Poag
3.Billy Mann
COACH
1.Sonny Allen

Poag was a 3. Not fleet enough to play the 2.

Cal, Valentine and Loughton would all be considered stretch 4s.

I’d put Isaiah Hunter as a SG over a 9 point per game Billy Mann.

Notably missing:

Power Forward
Joel Copeland

Small Forward
AC Carver in place of Cal Bowdler (who is not a small forward).
He averaged 15.5, 15, 20.2, and 21.1 points during his 4 years at ODU (1958 points total). Also averaged 50% (2 PT shots), 39% (3 PT shots), 75% (FT shots), and 7 rebounds (rounded off).

I'd probably put Drew Williamson over Caver and Freeman, but thats just me. Caver was certainly nearly, if not just as, good.

Yep... Poag definitely in for Cal at the 3 or AC Carver.
I’m with you on Hunter at the shooting guard.
I like the PG list as it is. Freeman not a great PG but dude could flat get buckets. Caver definitely the better athlete, team player and defender though.
I actually liked Gerald Lee a little more than Alex, but that’s splitting hairs. Loughton had a great career as well.

Good picks and I had forgot about Anthony Carver. That guy was smooth and along with Mark Davis might be the most underrated players from this program. And man if you ever saw Wilson Washington play, he would be higher on your lists, along with Mark West may be the 2 best big defenders we have ever had.

There has to be a spot for Ronnie McAdoo somewhere on this team.

Old dominion all time squad
I could only go by who I've actually seen and that's from 09 up so I can't say mine would be a fair assessment lol

Completely unrelated, but it is funny how the times have changed. If you asked me, I would say AC Carver was maybe the best 3 point shooter ODU has had. Up there with Poag. In the current game, his 39% wouldn't be considered much above average and there are dudes out there approaching 50%. Hell one of those guys is a 7 footer.

This is not to detract from AC. He is definitely one of the all time greats, I just thought the perspective was funny.

This is insanity.

Freeman was by far the best of the bunch despite his lack of defense. Caver was better than Williamson.

RE: Old dominion all time squad
Shame on all of you.

Frank Smith

https://odusports.com/sports/2019/9/16/208422080.aspx

One of the most solid point guards in Old Dominion University history, Frank Smith completed his career in 1988 as the NCAA's third all-time assist leader, the Sun Belt Conference all-time assist leader and Old Dominion University's all-time assist leader with 883. As an outstanding defensive player, Smith has 295 steals for his career which tops both Old Dominion and the Sun Belt Conference all-time lists.

In four seasons and 120 career games, Smith averaged 7.4 assists per game and 2.5 steals per contest. Smith led the Sun Belt Conference in 1986, and 1988 with 8.1 assists per game. He led the league with a career best of 8.2 in 1987, ranking him in the nation's top ten in all three of those seasons. In 1988, he came up with 83 steals for a 2.8 per game average, both school records. He dished out a career high 16 assists against Jacksonville in 1988. In the 1985 Sun Belt Conference tournament, Smith dished out a tournament record 12 assists twice.

But Smith's most remarkable statistic was his endurance. Frank averaged 38.5 minutes per game in 1986-87 and played 40 plus minutes 13 times that season, and 30 times for his career.

Do what now? Caver is not that far behind Freeman. You can't say insanity and then make that type of comment.

Yeah, I will stick by that. (senior years) Freeeman averaged 40 points per 100 possessions with 5.5 assists and 7.5 rebounds. (36 attempts)

Caver averaged 27 points per 100 possessions with 8.9 assists and 7 rebounds (24 attempts).

I love Caver and I defended him for 4 years when many were knocking him. And his defense was really good for us. But, Freeman was just another level. He took over games and there was nothing the opponent could do.

Caver took over games on the defensive side of the floor. Caver was the best defender on all of those teams he was on.

Why does it take a football fan like me to point out that no one has mentioned Frank Hassell. He only averaged 9.4 rebounds and 14.1 points his senior year while being CAA tournament MVP, First Team All CAA etc. etc. etc.

Yes, shame on me. Thank you for reminding me about the most underrated Monarch and one of my favorites.

I have a limited ODU basketball experience (09-10 was my freshman year) but Frank was a beast. I really thought he was going to make it in the NBA
