I don't think I'm understanding you here. Isn't soccer much bigger in the U.S. now than it was before 1994? I'm not sure 1994 me would have imagined that the MLS would be as popular as it is now, even looking ahead 27 years. Sure, the boom from the Cup has died down, but the "mean" we've regressed to seems much higher now. I have to think hosting had some impact on kickstarting that growth.

I would say that’s accurate, but I think womens soccer has stayed higher due to the success of the USWNT.

The problem with NCAA soccer is two-fold. Too Americanized in the rules compared to those following the FIFA laws, that turns off purists. The MLS academies and national youth program has made college soccer at least on the men’s side into something more like senior league baseball, a place to play for those who have missed their shot at development. The MLS Superdraft has become a yawner that no longer produces the future of a team but is more like the UDFA signings in the NFL a hunt for overlooked gems. If not for NPSL and USL2 college players wouldn’t get enough competitive play to even be relevant.

I had hoped college soccer would be to MLS what college football is to the NFL but that hasn’t happened.

Woah woah woah, slow down that is not entirely true. While I agree the structure is off, as there should be stoppage time in College. The development is definitely there, Coastal has had players go on to play in the MLS, and others go on to play in Eredivisie (Dutch 1st Division Football). Is it true that Americans have more opportunities to go to European Academies, or even MLS Academies now, YES. But there are still a lot of players who slip through the cracks and have a lot of potential thanks to the American pay to play model that leaves a lot of athletes behind.

The SuperDraft doesn’t produce as much talent as it did and as I said NPSL and USL2 have been critical to keeping college soccer relevant. Without those extra games how many guys would get that next chance
