Interesting read. Thanks for sharing. I wonder what a poll of students would say regarding a name change.

RE: Dixie State name change. So close, yet so far away.
You're welcome, and my pleasure.

A lot of very vocal students are for a name change. They claim they will be at a disadvantage in the job market and will be forced to justify the name in interviews.

Most of the state is very against it as it is part of Utah heritage and that part of the state has been called Dixie since it was first settled by Mormon pioneers over 150 years ago.

It's an interesting battle as the demographics of Utah are changing. Personally, if being forced to justify the name of your school in interviews is such a grave concern, I'm not sure why these students chose Dixie State. Personally, I don't take that concern seriously. In addition, I'm unclear who they think hasn't heard of the school and already knows why its called that. Unless, they are drawn by the low tuition but have no interest in ever living or working anywhere near the state of Utah, in which case, I'd say who cares about them lol.

Todor, I am with you on this one. The students decided to attend the university. They can always opt to attend another university since this is a free country. Do I like the connotations surrounding the name "Dixie"? No, I do not. However, that is the name of the school they decided to attend. If they do not like it then they should go somewhere else or follow the formal process of requesting a name change. Protesting at the capital seems less about your "noble" cause and more about them trying to get their 15 minutes of fame.

I think if the schools name wasn't an issue when they first enrolled, then it is a weak argument now. However, if they are saying the business (social) environment has changed since they first enrolled at Dixie State. And the connotations of the word "Dixie" has now become an issue then they might have a valid point; although difficult to quantify.

However, I don't know what the obstinance to a name change is all about? The word "Dixie" highlights an era in our country's history of slavery and rebellion and it really shouldn't be glorified in a school's name. Some people don't want change but much like the white man's word Redskins, Dixie is a word that should only exist in history books and not in every day society; that's if want to have an all inclusive society.

At one time New Mexico State was once known as New Mexico A&M. The name change happened many years ago and plays no effect on my life now. At the end of the day, it's just a school names. I'm sure if Dixie State changes its name now it plays little factor the lives of future student. And, if it make people feel better about American society, then all the better. Dixie meant something to those in the past but it has no purpose now. And, we can't live in the past. Things change and times change; hopefully it always to make life better.

RE: Dixie State name change. So close, yet so far away.
I understand people can go too far. I remember a few years back a person who move to Las Cruces took issue with the image of three crosses being placed on the city police cars; claiming a separation of church and state. Of course the argument was ridiculous since the city's name translates to "The Crosses".

I think any word, symbol, term that is rooted in oppression, i.e. The Holocaust, Slavery, the Trail of Tears, etc. is going to have a group of people trying to cancel it out of everyday society and culture. Jeremiah Dixon was only performing a duty but a variation on his name was perverted and glorified by the South in song during the Civil War. Much like the Hindu symbol "the Swatika" was perverted by Hitler. As I've said, if you want to have an all inclusive society, we need to be able to look at the world through other people's eyes; or at least have an an understand of how they might feel. There is no good reason why the word "Dixie" shouldn't be retired by the school. In the end, it's just a name change.

Just put it into similar context to Seattle U changing the name of the Connolly Center to Redhawk Center; because it was found that Archbishop Thomas Connolly was involved in covering up sex crimes committed by a Priest, Father Michael Cody. Archbishop Thomas Connolly died in 1991, the name change didn't happen until 2018.

Who knows, the name "Las Cruces" may be next. How can a city's name have connotations to one religion over another? When we try not to offend anyone, we will offend everyone. It is better to learn from history, embrace our mistakes and grow from them. Trying to revise history and hide everything through cancel culture only weakens everyone.

RE: Dixie State name change. So close, yet so far away.
I'm just afraid of changing things because of a few people. And then, the next group of people don't like the new name. Then what?

Having the name State in the name could offend some because the State could be viewed as a historically prejudiced institution. For that matter, universities only user to be for white males in some places, so for some, that has historic connotations which should be erased and then the entire concept of a university will have to be "reimagined."

If I actually thought there was something simple that would "fix it" and we could move on, I wouldn't be too opposed. But I fear it will simply move from one thing to the next until everything has been renamed, and then we'll start back at the beginning and start over, because people looking to be offended need will never run out of potential targets.

Removing George Washington's name from institutions because, as a man very much of his time, had ideas that are problematic when viewed hundreds of years later is wrong to me. He was a very progressive forward thinker for his era, yet that is not enough because he simply existed then?

If you donated a billion dollar a to a school now, would it be fair to remove any trace of your name down the road because you owned a pet? Because you weren't vegan? You called used the term Asian or African American? Because your particular religious denomination didn't come out in support of trans rights soon enough? Because you owned private property? What people may be against in the future is hard to predict, but being a good person in your own time may never again be enough. That's scary to me.

Preach it Tudor! 04-cheers

Just one addition. This type of cancel culture thinking has occurred in the past. It occurred under Stalin in the Soviet Union, under Mao in China, under Pol Pot in Cambodia, under Castro in Cuba, etc... They convince the masses that something is wrong in the culture (inequality, racism, gender bias, etc.) and blame this on a particular group of people (the bourgeoisie in Russia, the cultural elite in China, etc.) who they accuse of causing hatred and division. We are well on our way.

All I know is that this name change Dixie St wants to do should've happened before they jump to D1. This school has seen their name change a few time as well as their mascots have been switched up too.

founded by the LDS then handed over to the Utah government

1911 St George Stake Academy
1916 Dixie Normal College
1923 Dixie Junior College
1952 1st nickname was "Rebels"
1956 mascot formed as a confederate solider
1970 Dixie College
1993 The school drops all use of the confederate flag
2000 Dixie State College
2005 got rid of Rodney the Rebel
2007 dropped the Rebels as a nickname
2007 it was approved for Dixie St to change their name to University of Utah - St. George but it fell through b/c of leadership at school
2009 they picked the Red Storm nickname
2009 mascot was a hawk then and a black bull
2013 Dixie State University
2016 new nickname Trailblazers

This school has known nothing but changes ever few years. It struggles with the idea of how bad is the work Dixie and what does it mean to us as a community. I would say that confederate monikers flags and other civil war stuff that went along with the school name have been dropped now and it's probably time to finish the job. They already have the name locked and ready to go from the 1st approval to change their name.

So to make a long story short, they've virtually always been called Dixie, for over 100 years in fact.
